Description

I noticed that the single item that has the largest impact on game difficulty is Azura's Star. Without it, maintaining an enchanted weapon's charge requires consumable items, but with it, any character with a soul trap and/or a summon spell can essentially never run out of charge. In the mid-to-late game, enchanted weapons become quite important to maintaining damage output, so this makes Azura's star an essential item.

This mod makes two simple tweaks to level the playing field.

Enchantments Recharge Over Time

Exactly what it sounds like: your equipped weapon's enchantment will now regenerate charge slowly over time, like in Morrowind. The rate scales with your Mysticism skill, from the equivalent of a Petty soul per day for a Novice to a Common soul per day* for a Master. The recharge rate can also be customised, but the intention is that the rate is quite slow, since otherwise it would too heavily devalue soul gems.

If you are under the effect of the Ayleid Well spell, the rate of enchantment recharge will also be increased.

There are also two new loading screens that describe the recharge feature, to make it seem like it is part of the original game.

*If you are playing with a Timescale other than the default of 30, the formula for recharge rate will do some normalisation to make sure that you don't get penalised for in-game time passing slower or faster.

Azura's Star Regeneration

After using Azura's Star, it will become depleted and turn into a 'Dull' state. This means it can't accept another soul until it regenerates its power. By default, the Star will regenerate once during Dawn or Dusk, which is 6am or 6pm in the game world. This represents Azura's power refilling the soul gem during the liminal hours. There are four different regeneration modes in total, which are:

  • Mode 1 (Default) [One Regen] - Azura's Star will regenerate once during Dawn or Dusk.
  • Mode 2 [Unlimited Regens] - Azura's Star will regenerate any number of times during Dawn and Dusk. This means you can use it just like in the vanilla game, as long as it is still between 6-7am and 6-7pm.
  • Mode 3 [One Regen, Must be Outside] - Same as Mode 1, but you must be outside and not in Oblivion for the Star to regenerate.
  • Mode 4 [Unlimited Regens, Must be Outside] - As with Mode 3 (you need to be outside), but the Star can regenerate any number of times like with Mode 2.

The end result of these changes is that normal soul gems aren't de-valued as much by Azura's Star, and it also can't be relied upon for constant recharging throughout a dungeon.

Installation

This mod requires xOBSE.

Standard installation procedure: add the file to your data folder and check in the game launcher or your mod manager of choice.

Customisation

You can customise this mod's features be changing two global variables using the in-game console (or changing them in the esp in xEdit). You just need to open the console and type:

set <variable> to <#>

The two global variables are:

AzurasStarRegenMode - A number, 1 to 4, representing the regeneration mode, as outlined in the description above. Default is 1.
RechargePerDay - The amount of weapon charge regenerated per day at maximum Mysticism. Default is 800, which is a Common soul.

Setting either of the variables to 0 will disable the feature entirely.

Uninstallation

Just uncheck the mod. Uninstalling this mod will have no permanent effects on your save game.
