2022 Update: I mod FOTA in my spare time for fun, and I still make huge improvements every now and then. The actual story would take many, many, many hours (especially with my perfection standard) and as such is likely to never be completed.

Instead, I have a mod showcase here with screenshots: FOTA Art Gallery

FOTA now stands as a showcase of my artistic talent and ability, and of just art in general. It won't be playable, but you can check out all the Xivkyn, Apocrypha, and modern-engine-like underground city here.

    MORTAL.COIL IS COMING

2020 update: That's right. FOTA 5.0 is being replaced by a brand new story that will be the best quest mod ever made: Mortal Coil.

Check out the teaser trailer here: https://youtu.be/OBsCpaHiK2A

TL;DR - Real life in the way, aiming for late 2020 for possibly never on a release, FOTA is going to be unrecognizable in its current state.

Unfortunately I am faced with that thing which every artist struggles with: "real life." I have to pay bills and I have to do real life while I spend time modding, and Oblivion modding just isn't what it was. After all this, is a 10-year-old game, no? I am torn between the ideas I want to flesh out, and just finishing the mod for the sake of release, and letting it go.

Every time I sit down to work, there is another thing I want to implement. It's not uncommon for me to decide to work on a certain part, and then switch to 12 hours getting caught up in new art assets, for example. :P As it stands right now, there is at least 1-2 hours of extended content to be added, about 3-4 videos that need to be reshot (these cutscenes must be coded, filmed, and then edited), all of Valamoor's dialog must be redone and there are at least 1-2 thousand more lines of dialog to really flesh out the plot more. The best comparison I have is the mod "Brotherhood of Shadow" for Knights of the Republic, for those who are familiar. That mod, when it came out, was brilliant, but several years later the author released version 2 which redid all of the dialog for the mod and extended it by several hours, and what was at first a somewhat confusing and esoteric plot became MUCH more comprehensible and playable, and the new ending was absolutely stellar (and emotional).

This is what I am trying to achieve here with FOTA, which will be renamed to "This Mortal Coil." On top of this, I have an entire sequel planned for Skyrim, and meanwhile by the time I am finished it's likely that ES: VI will be on its way. Such is my fate, to be attached to a game that nobody plays anymore. I am doing things with this engine and with the gameplay that have never been done before; for example, NOBODY has ever done the minute facial expressions, gestures, etc. that you will see in my complex cutscenes. People are so used to machinima now, they probably don't even know the work required to build a cutscene where characters make tiny adjustments to where they're looking or moving on the fly. I everything timed down to a 1/10 of a second, and I will spend hours if necessary to get the timings just right so that it is natural, and fluid--I am a perfectionist.

When I am done, nothing in the mod except for the city of "Avalon" itself will be recognizable--and there are even additions and tweaks I am making to that to really take what was a spectular creation (by the original indefiance) and integrate into a worthy quest and near-DLC for Oblivion (while remaining as lore-friendly as I can and adding the new lore).

At this point you can expect an early-or-mid 2019 release, depending on how much I can stomach dedicating myself to this work of art on a 10-year-old game. If I were to spend all my time on it, I could have it done in a month or two, but that's not quite realistic. And worse, it's hard to justify this when I know that so few people will actually end up playing the mod, or appreciating it. As such, this mod has 4k downloads and only 168 endorsements, and interest in Oblivion is not going up, it's likely going down with the advent of Skyrim SE. Still, when I'm done this will be an adventure like no other, the best quest mod on the Oblivion Nexus, and you will see plenty of inspiration from other games for concepts and gameplay in my own Ayleid spin that will make it much, much more enjoyable than any of the originals (including the Frostcrag Reborn that this was all originally based on). That is my goal.

Another reason it's taking so long is that I first started this mod in 2014 as my debut, and much of the coding, dialog, and gameplay is very immature. Essentially it was just "Frostcrag Reborn" with an added companion quest at that time, but since then it has evolved into a very large vision that was too great for its current state, and so I had to entirely remove Frostcrag, for starters. Really, the quest needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, since so much of it was jerry-rigged and littered with poor coding or implementation and weak dialog, resulting in a quest that was a B-movie at best and made little sense with tons of plot holes. The way I am doing it now, it will be a complete, coherent, intelligible story from start-to-finish with tons of Ayleid lore (both from Bethesda and made-up) thrown in, with a more personal character-driven story and realistic motivations. I had considered just writing a novella and being done with my ideas that way, but as it stands now the mod is in a development stage. I could take the easy route and finish it in a week if I wanted, but it would be half of what it could be and disappointing. I understand why this mod received so few comments; the story was not engaging or memorable enough. I think RPG players who tend to like quest mods really DO like well thought-out and provocative stories, not just a quick romp through some overpowered enemies, and that is what I want to deliver. As per the Skyrim sequel, I do think at this point it is best left behind. I will do my due diligence, I think, and make a novella out of THAT since very little has been done except for art assets, but there is a ton of lore, dialog, and ideas that could made into something akin to a screenplay or draft that would help me get my catharsis and would allow those interested to see what would have been possible. Even more irritating (hah), Beyond Skyrim has just released new Ayleid assets and the Imperial City, which feature heavily in the sequel, so the hardest parts have already been done. We''ll see what happens after TMC is finished.

I see now 100% why companies cut content and release unfinished games, and empathize totally, but I have the luxury and curse of no mandatory release date. I still get PMs here and there asking about it, so this is what I want to say. Fall of the Ayleids has become much more than the sum of its parts and it's made more frustrating because nothing I am planning cannot be done--it's just a matter of time and tedium. There is a whole section in Shring that will take many hours of coding where the player will be on a moving platform, for instance, that heads up through massive chambers similar to Halo 2, where you face off against infected Ayleids and Dremora dropping down onto it. I've never seen anything like this in Oblivion or Skyrim, but will the amount of work be worth it for who will appreciate it? I don't know, but I can't bring myself to release a half-finished concept. I am going to do this, and I am going to do it right.

That said, you can check out the work-in-progress on my Twitter. I add new screenshots every time I am excited by what I'm working on.

Please leave comments and tweets and let me know what you think. FOTA is going to be like nothing you've experienced in an Oblivion mod before, and an impactful story about immortality, the pursuit of power, and, of course--Love.

MORTAL COIL, my true love, is on semi-permanent hiatus. Projected release is 2021 or NEVER.

In the meantime, checkout my WIP screenshots, which I will be uploading to this file page.

This is really cool.  I had no idea this existed since I took a 14 year hiatus myself on Frostcrag Reborn and Oblivion in general and this had such a different name I didn't see it.  It popped up on a random search I did and it was a screenshot of a level I created that caught my eye.  Totally cool s#*! what you have done with this and I'm stoked someone actually took me up on the Open Source offer, you have some real talent with scripting and modding.  Nice work.  It always kinda ate at me that I didn't get a few more things done on Frostcrag myself so I know the feeling of life pulling you away.  I wish I had seen this earlier, I started a complete overhaul of Frostcrag Reborn last year and have been incrementally updating it.  Some cool ideas here.

I have this strange issue where there is two "Lord Miraas" in the room with the crystal. How do i fix this. I have very few other mods installed. (QTP, Knights, Ravenpride, lost spires, cybiades, unofficial patches, and some OCO mods)

Edit: disabled all mods except the unofficial patches, reinstalled fall of the ayleids, made a new game but still i get the same result. Two Miraas.

Thanks for reporting this bug. Are you able to continue the quest, or unable to continue?

I've noticed a few recent replies, and I am wondering...

Is the hiatus mentioned prior still in effect, or is the mod being worked on little by little, here and there still?

Damn shame we will likely never see an update now it's going on to 2023. Loved the trailers so I was looking forward to the update as well as a definitive end to the story.

As it stands now; the mod is still good. Short, but sweet. A lot of left-over unused assets ranging from weapons to npcs(like Hadrian and Cassandra for example)that make zero appearances in the mod. But it is still fun to play.

Having not played Frostcrag Reborn, this mod is kinda making me want to check it out. Though I do wonder; will the stories between the Avalon from Reborn and the Avalon from this mod be similar? Or are they completely different?

Wait till you see the unused assets I have accumulated since then, the mod is not even recognizable in its current form. I've buot entire worlds like Apocrypha, Cold Harbour. Brand new armors from the ground up, elaborate and intense scripted cutscenes. And the mod is still not even half finished yet. Doubt it will ever be.

I may choose to upload all the work I have available in its current form for anyone who wants to peruse it. Although that may feel more like someone trespassing on sacred ground, but I suppose it is better than keeping it all secret for no one to see. I haven't decided yet.

Does your reply here mean that the 'hiatus' brought up in the locked messages at the top of the posts tab isn't active still? Or you're at least working on the mod little by little here and there, still?

This mod seems to conflict with Ancient Dwemer Ruins.

Valamoor was having a lot of trouble getting up the mountain, and when we arrived at the crossroads my controls get disabled and he just stands there not doing or saying anything

I tried going around the other side to the floating magical door and went through it. Now I'm stuck in place and Valamoor just keeps running through it over and over lol.

Shame, this mod looked really promising but I guess it's not gonna work for me

I know the current version will be scrapped, but I don't suppose you could possibly make a compatibility patch for Order Of The Dragon if Mortal Coil doesn't come out anytime soon? And if it does come out, if there are conflicts, will there be a patch available? This mod looks so neat, man.

There's this but I haven't gotten any of the FOTA patches to work. And it's even worse if you try to add Midas Magic to the mix.

Love the mod so far. Hadn't done a full playthrough JUST yet but I have tested it out for a bit to make sure it was mostly in place. I'll be coming back to give my full thoughts when I'm done.

In the meantime, a few initial things I wanted to point out.

    1) The tower doesn't have collision on. For some reason, I can seemingly run through it, which is a little bit strange. Not game-breaking, but it is surprising. Imagine my surprise when I leapt off a cliff to land on the flaming towers and I just ended up plummeting to my death.

    2) It does conflict with Gates to Aesengaard Ep 1 and 2. The ruins are directly behind the Crosswalk. While if you use all the Patches for Jerall Mountain areas (and there are a lot...) between OotD, GTAes 1&2, Fort Akatosh Redux, and UL it doesn't create any land tears. Just some floating rocks that you can use to get in and out of the ruin and to the Crosswalk area. Your mileage may vary though if you're not using those areas or have even more mods that affect this popular mod location.

Overall though it's nothing too bad my immersion levels can't handle and I am excited to try this out looking at all the praise that this mod has been receiving.

That vagueness is intentional. It leaves things open for you to interpret...or perhaps for a sequel.

      Glad you enjoyed it.

    Question,

Starting an Oblivion(+Morroblivion) run bout this weekend, lots of mods installed so can take me a big while to get to FotA.

If I complete FotA, and the update gets released, can I redo the new version? Or should I just wait for the new version on my current run? Will I miss out on original FotA content or is that covered in the new version.

And bro, I'm loving the s*** out of your trailers. Havent seen anything like that for Oblivion.
