I've been using Multiple Oblivion Manager for a while now to switch between testing installs, but it seems you guys really like mTES4. If anyone has used MOM, could you please tell me if there would be a benefit to switching to mTES4? Thanks!!

I decided to give a MOM a try and I noticed a few things:
      - MOM can use installs located basically anywhere on your pc, whereas mTES4 requires all copies of Oblivion to be in the same folder. (Although you can workaround this by using symlinks and junctions either through the command line or a utility).
      - MOM is Wrye Bash aware and prompts you to create (or locate) the Oblivion mods folder for each install (if the BAIN setting is checked)[This is very useful if you plan on using different mods with other installs]. MTES4 is not.
      - MOM also prompts you to create (or locate) the appdata and mygames folder where mTES4 automatically creates appropriate folders for each install.
      - Both of the managers are able to launch Oblivion and the Construction set, with or without OBSE along with some various other applications, though these differ between the apps.
      - MOM can launch OBMM, Wrye Bash, and BOSS provided it can find them and they aren't grayed out. For me, only BOSS is selectable. Since I just
started using this, I don't know how to get MOM to recognize the other two apps.
      - MTES4 can launch the Oblivion Launcher and TES4LODGen.
      - MTES4 can have problems if something happens to the folder names that MTES4 uses and they don't match up in name. In this case, you must rename them yourself (It won't tell you this if it fails to swap installs as one of its common causes) as indicated in my post below this one (or before if you are viewing from the forum thread)
      - If you have a steam install and steam is open, MOM will still be able to switch to that profile but it will fail to rename the folders inside the steam/steamapps/common folder. You must do this manually.

That's all I have for now. As I'm still very new to MOM, I haven't ran across any issues yet. I will try to update this post should I find anything significant. If you do plan on using Wrye Bash for your mods, it would seem MOM is the better choice for that.

?- MOM can use installs located basically anywhere on your pc, whereas mTES4 requires all copies of Oblivion to be in the same folder.?
This is not entirely true, as MOM will move said install to the Oblivion path specified in settings.

I don't know what I did wrong to deserve this kind of bad luck, but for some reason today I can't switch between clones anymore on MTes4! I need your help ASAP, otherwise I'm gonna have no other choice but to uninstall every copy of Oblivion and reinstall the game from scratch!

Now I'm unable to even uninstall Oblivion copies made my MTes4, let alone Oblivion itself without risking screwing up Windows 10 and possibly corrupting my PC!!!!!! We need a better way of figuring out how to get MTes4 working again!!!

Make sure you check your folders closely and that they correctly match up to what they are supposed to be as indicated in mTES4. The locations you need to check is the root folder where Oblivion is installed under, User\AppData\Local[Oblivion], and User\Documents\My Games\[Oblivion]. If the naming conventions are out of sync, you won't be able to switch profiles.

For example, I just recently solved my problem where my modded copy was selected, yet it was using Nehrim's folders from app data and saves. In my case, I had to rename the Oblivion folder to Nehrim (under appdata and documents paths), and move those folders under the Oblivion-mTES4 folder. I renamed the 'Original Copy' profile to Oblivion and moved it from the Oblivion-TES4 folder to the appropriate paths (one for under appdata and the other under documents). Make sure you don't have any of the other issues that mTES4 informs you about when you can't switch and you should be able to get it to work.

I hope this make sense. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to explain it better.

May need a video tutorial explaining in slower detail, especially for those of us stuck with Windows 10 64 bit setups!

I'm also on the appdata folder and went to click on the Oblivion folder and seen 3 files called DLC List, Plugins.tes4viewsettings, and Plugins! Now I go to check the MTES4 folder and noticed a number of named clones including ones I recognized in the past when I had STEAM copy of Oblivion and MTES4 on my old Vista PC! Wonder how that could be showing up on my newer Windows 10 PC? Now I go to delete all the old folders with the old clone names leaving only the 5 copies I have based on what shows on MTES4!

Now I go to check those other 5 Oblivion copies (actually 4 clones and the original unmodded Vanilla copy) and noticed that the 4 clones only have the DLC list and Plugins pages and the original copy has the same 3 pages as the copy I have active! WHat do I do now?

I haven't used mTES4 since I switched to MOM since it seems to be easier to use. Since I removed all of my clones in mTES4, I don't remember the generic warnings that mTes4 throws out at you when it can't switch other than Oblivion folders being open in windows nor I can test my example below. I don't use Windows 10 but the folder structure shouldn't be that different from 7(it has changed a bit from XP to 7 in the names of folders; i.e. application data is now AppData). Nevertheless, I can attempt to reiterate what the readme and description states so that it might be easier to digest and visualize:

The three locations I mentioned earlier is where Oblivion stores files that mTES4 keeps track of for you:
      1. The game folder [Oblivion] (paths can vary but most usually use a path similar to C:\Games\Oblivion if not using the steam version. If installed under the default location, program files, UAC may interfere with modding and possibly this program).
      2. The profile folder for Oblivion (Users\USER_NAME\Documents\My Games)
      3. The AppData folder (Users\USER_NAME\Local Settings\AppData)

mTES4 creates two additional folders for any clones that you might create:
      1. The clone profile folder (Users\USER_NAME\Documents\My Games\Oblivion-mTES4)
      2. The clone AppData folder (Users\USER_NAME\Local Settings\AppData\Oblivion-mTES4)

It stores any of the clones' settings that are not active in these folders. For instance, let's say we had Oblivion, Nehrim, and Steam installed as our clones and Oblivion is active. Under the install folder, you'll see Oblivion, Nehrim, and Steam listed there( I don't remember exactly how mTES4 renames its clones - MOM does it like this{with Oblivion still being active}: Oblivion, MOM_ Nehrim, MOM_Steam).

In the clone profile & the clone AppData folder there will be two folders: Nehrim and Steam; whereas Oblivion would still be in the normal locations for the profile and AppData folder.

All of these folders must match up to the names of the clones provided in mTES4 in order to switch between clones.

In my example from two years ago, I said that Oblivion was my active clone, yet it was using Nehrim's folders from appdata and my games(saves). I went to the game folder(C:\Games\Oblivion) to verify the folder names: Oblivion, Nehrim, Steam. All good here. Now to My Games.

Under this folder, I found the Nehrim Folder instead Oblivion. So I moved this folder under the clone profile folder (Users\USER_NAME\Documents\My Games\Oblivion-mTES4) and then renamed my modded installation that was named 'Original Copy' to 'Oblivion' and then moved it from the clone folder to My Games. Now I check AppData. This folder has the same problem. So I repeat what I did in My Games but apply it here in AppData and the clone AppData folder (Users\USER_NAME\Local Settings\AppData\Oblivion-mTES4) and double check that all 3 of these folders(Game folder, My Games, and App Data) have 'Oblivion' in them instead of one of the other clones.

Now mTES4 will able to switch profiles because all the folders match with the same name! And that is how I solved my issue back then; hopefully in an easier to understand format.

Keep in mind it is possible to change your active clone through the .ini file too but the folders still must match in name for it to work. Also, you may need to reboot your pc and try again if the switch fails.

NVM, figured it all out! Somehow all these problems were caused by the then late 2019 windows 10 version!!! Things seem stable now!

Fantastic! So much easier switching between vanilla Oblivion, Modded Oblivion, and Nehrim! Thank you for this!

By now, I've been using mTES4 for months and now I can't live without it. It has completely changed the way I experience the game. Moreover, it gave me the push I needed to become a serious modder.

I has to install a new version of .NET Framework and do other update and optimization tasks to mi pc in order to have a fully functional installation of the Manager, but it definitely was worth the work.

    Thank you very much!

    Cheers!
