About this mod

Restores the classic trail visuals and adds procedural variety to the emission of ship trails.

Permissions and credits
This mod aims to reimagine the ship trail systems from the 2014 gameplay trailers and promotional images for modern No Man's Sky. It replaces the trail visuals for player, trader, squadron and sentinel ships and reworks the engine glow and flame effects. It also adds a complex procedural system which varies which engines will emit trails on fighter, hauler, and explorer class ships.

The mod is split into two parts so players can choose which features they want to use; the visual component will replace all the trail and engine visuals and the generation component adds the procedural emission system.

COLOURS

Player, trader, and squadron ships all use the iconic blue and orange gradient trail, Pirates use a red trail and sentinels have pink trails. These colours match with the trails from older, pre NEXT versions of the game and also the 2014 prerelease demos. Most customized ship trails should be unaffected, but a few of them reuse the trails from NPC ships and may not look as expected.

ENGINE EFFECTS

The engine glow and flame effects have been overhauled with custom textures to match the 2014 aesthetic while still using modern techniques.

PROCEDURAL GENERATION

Fighters, haulers, and explorer ships all have a new layer of procedural generation to control where their engine trails should come from. Fighters, haulers, and symmetrical explorers with secondary engines will now roll whether their trails should be emitted from their primary set, secondary set, or both sets of engines. Asymmetrical explorers will only roll between using their primary or both sets, ensuring good looking trails on every ship. Custom built ships will always emit trails from their primary engines and never from their secondary set.

INSTALLATION NOTES
The download for this mod includes to folders. Simply extract those folders to [Game Directory]/GAMEDATA/MODS and ensure that Ensure that [Game Directory]/Binaries/SETTINGS/GCMODSETTINGS.MXML has its DisableAllMods value is set to False.

To disable either component of this mod, either delete the associated folder or disable the component from within GCMODSETTINGS.MXML after launching the game with the mod installed.

Due to some compatibility limitations, the Generation component of this mod may not work with mods that alter ship generation. Specifically, these issues should be limited to mods that edit the engine and wing parts on ships, or mods that add new engines or wings. I have deliberately built in support for AltF4's Nature Hauler With Iron Vulture Parts mod, and can possibly add more support for anything else that might break the system.

CHANGELOG

Version 1.0: Release

Version 1.1: Fixed a bug that caused the visual component to change some ships' paint schemes (hopefully)
