Makes everything render as black and white for me. So I think it needs an update.

I'd love to see this work for the Foundation Update too. And - if possible - I'd love an option to simply reduce the fake rim lighting. The game looks better with none, but a little would be nice (to keep some of the bumpmaps visible for better surfaces)

It does work for the Foundation update, and there is a reduced version.

Unfortunately this doesn´t work with the new update. They have improved a lot of things making many mods unnecesary, but the fake lighting is still there. Could be possible to adapt this mod?

edit: sorry, I´m retarded, I've noticed that you already updated the mod. I was using the old version.

Hi Apst, I just want to let you know I got a huge constant framerate drop at game loading with today's experimental PC update :
only 3fps during all the galaxy fly-by. I quit 2 minutes later and game didn't even had launch my savedgame yet.
Is this the same for you ?

I removed all my mods and reintroduced them one by one to discover it only acts this way with no rim lighting in.
Not sure it is worth inspecting right now as there's an obvious planet cloud layer bug that they need to fix so they might change things again soon, but I prefer to report this issue as temporary removing no rim lighting could let everyone play with experimental branch right now.
I assume Hello Games changed the structure of shader in some way (I havn't checked yet).
By the way, no rim lighting is a great mod and I'm eager to be able to play again with it on soon

Did you delete shadercache to see if it fixes your issues?

Also usually after some patches, you will get slow downs because the patch might delete the shadercache folder and you will experience a lot of fps dips in game for up to 1 hour while it rebuilds everything.

It sucks but just wait a small while, also sometimes restarting a few times fixes the issue for me.

Yes, I deleted the shader cache and got the same issue again :/
But I tried with the mod again today and it only staggered for one second before game launched normaly. Weird.
At least it works. Thanks for the tip though.

Hey were you ever able to fix this? Because I tried installing this mod and I still get this problem. There's no other mod out there that I can find that makes things darker like this one does and clearly this one hasn't been updated...

Is it just me or is rim light the incorrect term here? A rim light is used to light something from behind so it gets a sheen around its silhouette to make it stand out against the background. But this seems to be ambient light which makes parts that are in complete shadow have at least some base light so stuff isn't completely black, which it never is in real life because of bounce light. In games it's basically a cheap way of getting around actual GI, which is mostly still not feasible in real time rendering.

So completely disabling this would be a bad idea and not realistic at all. I'd go with the 'almost no rim light' mod instead to get darker shadows but still some much needed ambient light.

Ok after investigating some more, it does seem to be a rim light as the edges of stuff are always more lit than the rest. But indeed they use this s#*! as a replacement for ambient light, meaning if you disable it you get parts that are completely unlit and that is unrealistic for the reasons mentioned above. So the 'almost' mod seems to be the best compromise.

Correct on both counts. It's definitely rim lighting, and there's no ambient light in the game except for the skylight, but that only affects terrain for some reason. Turning it off makes every shadow in the game pitch black.

This is actually not done as an ambient light technique. The only reason developers use this, is to have objects highlighted so players can find them.

Which is completely insane, but well, casuals are now the biggest demographic for games, so there you go.

NMS effectively uses it as a replacement for ambient light on objects, though, not just for highlighting.

By the way, fun fact: NMS didn't have rim lighting originally: https://youtu.be/h-kifCYToAU?t=60

Is this mod compatible with DEEP SPACE?

Deep Space also modifies the rim lighting, using the same file as this mod, so no. Technically they're not compatible. But it wouldn't do any harm to overwrite one with the other if you know how to.

You can use Immersive Space instead, which is compatible.
