One would have to create different graphics files. The scratches on fighters are actually added onto them. A ship you see with this mod is actually the real ship, just with out junk added on. The scratches are, essentially, just decals.
As far as I know there is no real way to add logic via an NMS mod. So no way to say, "If Class=B use graphics J" for instance.
All that said I've always agreed with you. C-Class ships should look like grungy old clunkers, but S-Class ships should look pristine. It would have to be the game developer to do that, however.
Completely correct that this would be a Hello Games thing, not possible via modding. Not only would it require new TEXTURES for each class, but (this one is the mod killer), separate MATERIAL files for each class of each ship, to call the new TEXTURE files. Game isn't setup for different MAT files by class, only by ship type and we wouldn't be able to change that or add any logic, as mentioned.
I've been using something called paint dechipper for 5 years now. I'm not even sure if it's this mod or not. Nothing along the way broke it until 5.0. Was going to download this one, but it appears to have the same issue. It still removes the scratches (or actually keeps them from being applied), but all the other additions like fueling ports or whatever are all corrupted now, not the actual ship decorative decals.
Should be good now. Sorry it's a little larger than old version, but was working with janky editing software, not the good stuff. lol Please let me know. :)
Yep. Texture mods have always been rock solid. Winders Windrex bit the dust too. We got them fixed, although still no idea what the game was barfing on.
I had a look at it today, but I just don't know enough about 3D modeling. The mod contains a mask file that absolutely doesn't match the current one. So I looked at the old files (4.5) and it doesn't match that one either but it still worked. The newer mask files are all just 512X1024 blank (transparent) files.
There is a new group of files in the folder all with the same filenames except they start with "Broken". I tried just modifying them like the original files, but it has no effect. The game looks like it has a mask (I think) but no graphics to put there. Still, I really don't know how this works.

UPDATE: It appears to work on my other ships. I'm now assuming it doesn't work on the Golden Vector or NPC ships. Was hoping to fix up the Vector, but since it probably works as intended, endorsed.
Are you sure? This mod hasn't broken since its creation because it is fundamentally a simple image file swap. It's not impossible, but it's more likely to be something simpler. Did you load another mod that alters fighter surface textures like one of Gumsk's cool color switchers? Or maybe that darn DSABLEMODS file reappeared? If you're sure, I'll check it out and see what's up, but remind me on Discord at " exosolar " since I don't check into Nexus comments very often.
Are there ships it wouldn't work on? I loaded it up and my Golden Vector didn't change at all. Still had chipped paint. I looked at NPC ships that were landing, same thing. Maybe it doesn't work on NPC ships or Vector? I've never loaded a paint texture mod as far as I'm aware, so I don't think there is any conflict.
I guess I could try again and see if there is a change on my other ships....

Yes, it doesn't work on any fighter with a non-standard texture assignment, like Golden Vector. I think Gumsk addressed that issue directly in one of his mods (IIRC?)
I just wanted to confirm for anyone like me who was being driven crazy by the beater paintjobs that the fighter ships in this game have (WHY Hello Games?!) -- that this mod works 100% with 4.08 Waypoint.
To the mod creator, thank you for this wonderful mod. It's simple but makes a huge difference, especially if you like to collect fighters!

Glad it's fixed and thank you!!!
