About this mod

Featuring an undercover FBI agent posing as a member of the Communist Party, I Was A Communist! is a 50s hit of McCarthyism, Red Scare propaganda, and dramatic fiction, as sensationalized as the title would suggest, and not made in collaboration with the FBI or official sources.

Aired 1952 - 1954 I Was a Communist for the FBI rode the coattails of the Red Scare, aired even though the FBI refused to cooperate with its production. Based on the book by the same name by Matt Cvetic, an undercover operative who joined the Communist Party to spy from within.

This series capitalized on the new Red scare of the early 1950s: 78 episodes were recorded, without any assistance from the FBI, which refused to cooperate. It didn't matter: anti-Communist hysteria was at a peak, and by the end of 1952 I Was a Communist was scheduled on more than 600 stations.

The show was based on the book (and subsequent movie) by Matt Cvetic and purportedly told of his adventures as an undercover operative who joined the Communist Party to spy from within. Many of the stories contained double-edged conflicts: Cvetic constantly jockeyed for information, walking a tightrope among suspicious Party officials while unable to reveal his true mission even to his family, who shunned him.

Category: Thriller/Suspense
Average episode length: 25 minutes.
Track Number: 40 episodes included.
Personal Entertainment rating: 3/5

This show naturally fits into the extension of the Fallout aesthetic by virtue of its subject matter, but is inherently silly. The plot itself is entirely fictitious, and likely most suited for Old World Blues or the Capital Wasteland. I would say the tone is tongue-in-cheek, except that it takes itself entirely seriously.  All in all, it is still a very entertaining cultural remnant of pre-war America.

Again, let me reiterate: REGARDLESS OF YOUR PERSONAL BELIEFS, THIS SHOW DID NOT HAPPEN. IT IS NOT "DRAMATIZED", IT IS FICTITIOUS. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU BELIEVE EVENTS TO BE PLAUSIBLE OR RIDICULOUS, THEY DID NOT OCCUR, SAID DEPICTIONS ARE A PRODUCT OF WRITERS, AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS A HISTORICAL SOURCE ONLY IN THE SENSE OF DEPICTING VALUES AND ATTITUDES OF THE TIME, AND NOT IN DEPICTING EVENTS OR PEOPLE OR INSTITUTIONS- THE PLOT ITSELF IS AS REAL AS LOONEY TUNES OR BEOWULF. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Hoping to steal our rockets so they can fly up and
paint the moon pink and draw a Lenin face on it.

"Okay so vocabulary groundwork: we're going to make a distinction about what we mean when we say propaganda. Broadly speaking propaganda is just any goal-driven ideological message, and a lot of stuff incidentally falls under that umbrella.  For example any official message from an activist community meets the literal definition.

Signs encouraging you to, like, pick up after your dog.

So the first thing that we need to make note of is the textural difference between the literal definition of propaganda and how people actually use the word. Contextually propaganda is used derisively, not merely used to describe the literal characteristics of some text or another, but carries with it a value judgments with the implicit understanding that propaganda is bad. Memetically, propaganda represents not just rhetoric but some degree of dishonesty: not an attempt to persuade but to deceive. Not an attempt to inform but to inflame. And even by this metric there's still plenty that qualifies as propaganda from white nationalists spreading false statistics about crime to corporations trying to paper over the damage they do to bloggers being paid to pretend to like a video game.

So what we're going to do here is draw a fine line between propaganda and “PROPAGANDA”, the distinction being a difference between general propaganda and propaganda generated by and in service of governments. I feel like this is an important distinction to make because there is a potent contextual difference between, say, the propaganda tracts and memes spread by hate groups and those spread by the state.

That distinction is order of magnitude.

The sheer reach and spending power at the disposal of government is so far beyond the scope of even corporations that it's a laughable comparison.
