I was wondering if somebody could help me out with an issue I have. I'm using this mod alongside better grass but I seem to encounter more grass in the capital wasteland (using TTW) in places I haven't seen before it's most noticeable at the anchorage memorial and outside smith caseys garage where it is coming through the concrete paths and it looks really unnatural. Has anybody else experienced this at all? I have the latest versions of xNVSE, JIP, Stewies fixes etc and am following the best of times, wasteland survival guide and Sals visual renewal page. Any help would be appreciated.
From my understanding, the grass is randomly spawned in place with rotation and scale also randomized. The developers painted an area where the grass should spawn and then that is where it is in the game. Due to it being random in size and scale means that it (occasionally) will clip into other things. However, this shouldn't be occurring that often and should change with a cell load i.e. fast traveling somewhere else. My mod does not change where the grass spawns. Can you please share a picture as an example?
Another thing to check would be if you edited the grass size.
[Grass] iMinGrassSize=80 If you changed this from its default 80, it may make the issue worse in certain areas.
Thanks for replying Audley apologies for the long reply been mega busy during the week and haven't had the chance to jump onto this, grass size hasn't been edited it's at default I will post a screenshot to show you.
Thx for the update and keeping the old file. In my current visual setup the old file fits better. The new one is beautiful indeed but also much brighter.
Ah hey no problem! I kept the old version since I thought people might prefer the more realistic/tones down coloring so I made sure to keep that. I am looking to make a new version (alternate) with the benefits of 2.0 but with the realistic colors. Glad you like the mod!
Can someone please recommend their settings under [Grass] in their falloutcustom.ini? I have this setting only under it: fGrassStartFadeDistance=7000 and I was wondering what a balanced setting between performance and visuals might look like.
I don't particularly recommend changing it much from vanilla. iMinGrassSize is 80 in vanilla, but Fade Distance is 7000 already. That's the best balance in my opinion. For iMinGrassSize, the lower the value the more dense the grass is. I find 60 to be good.
Apologies for any confusion. I completely forgot the changelog in all honesty, despite me thinking "I need to remember to add a changelog" before submitting. Thanks for the reminder; changelog should be reflective of all changes.
I like it. Seems natural that there'd be taller grasses in the wasteland. And I believe the shorter burnt out looking vanilla version was due to the lesser heft of the systems when the game was first released. Anyways, thank you for this. I've been playing F3 and FNV for so many years. Your mod, and all the others like yours makes these games way better. Such a small thing as grass can make such a big difference.
Hey thanks for the kind words! Appreciate it. The vanilla grass looks thin towards the top because the default atlas (texture map) for the grass is only 1024x1024 (1k) in resolution, but like 6 or so grass models share that texture. So the top of the grass is literally only a handful of pixels in the vanilla game.
It seems like a lot of my grass here is leaning towards a dark color, almost looks like burnt areas when there is a lot the very dark grass together around good springs. Is there any easy way to lighten it up?
I would have kept the colors the same as vanilla except... well, the AI upscaling changes the colors by itself. There's no real way to prevent this while working with such a smaller resolution file. So I opted to manually make color changes in my personal preference. If it's looking too dark in the Mojave, maybe I could upload a more vanilla-ish recolor for those who feel it's not light enough. Thanks for letting me know, I'll see what I can do.
As for the black lines, does it look different on your screen or does it look the same as in my screenshots?
Well I just solved it, I think. For some reason my game copied my Fallout.ini into Falloutprefs.ini. I think something about that made the grass look insane. Now that I fixed that and I'm looking at it properly, I realize how bizarre the effect was. Should have taken a screenshot. The grass was HUGE and black lined like a cell shaded game or something. Now it looks really good. Sorry for the confusion! The colorization issue was just a result of those black outlines.
I'm a sort of big picture sort of guy. I have looked closely at the grass... once. But, for the most part, I take it in with all the surroundings as I scoot along to the next thing. "It just works".
