Lore
In your travels as the Courier, you had rescued a pair of scientists who had discovered a particle with the power to bend space/time.
They gratefully provided you with a sample to help you survive the wasteland. As you start the game, you'll find it in your inventory as a consumable item.
Operation
Employ it in the same manner as a chem and it will transport you to one of 277 locations, somewhere in the Mojave.
The particle sample is consumed as you use it, but it (and you) are simultaneously regenerated at a new location.
Time is bent forward and then back, so you arrive at approximately the same time, somewhere else.
Applications
You could theoretically use this to escape deadly circumstances, but where's the fun in that?
I use it to challenge myself by teleporting straight into the unknown. It's also great if you're just bored with your current situation.
You can even even teleport from interior locations!
Caveat: When seeking an alternate start location, leaving the Doctor's house first is highly recommended.
This ensures that the initial quests are terminated, radio stations are geared up, etc.
This is a great way to keep things interesting and discover new locations.
