About this mod

Restores the ending of Fallout 3 that was changed in Broken Steel. The player no longer miraculously survives turning on the purifier, and has to sacrifice Sarah or bring a companion to continue.

Note: Tale of Two Wastelands version 3.3 and higher contains the majority of this mods functionality. If you are playing hardcore mode, the player will die if they choose to activate the purifier. This mod applies that functionality to non-hardcore characters, as well as changing some karma interactions, and editing the narration for endings in which the player uses the FEV for tonal consistency.

Summary

With Broken Steel installed, the player will always survive the ending of Fallout 3 (unless they sit around for a minute and don't activate the purifier), even if they walk into the certain death chamber. Any other human who goes in dies, but for "reasons" the player does not.

This mod restores the original version of the video that plays if the player activates the purifier, in which their gooified remains are seen, and ends the game if this ending is chosen. You can no longer continue the game after doing this. You are dead. If you want to continue playing, you need to sacrifice Sarah, or use one of your companions instead.

This mod also removes the free 600 karma boost for activating the purifier. No matter the choices you had made, Broken Steel always gave you 600 karma for activating the purifier, even if you installed the FEV. You will now only get the 600 karma bonus if you did not install the FEV. The ending videos have also been altered if the FEV is used. The sacrifice ending videos will all have their narration replaced with the music from the purifier blowing up video, if you use the FEV. This prevents the narrator from talking about humanity being saved in one slide, and in the next talking about its demise. The final picture shot is also disabled if you do this. These changes should hopefully make evil playthroughs easier, and make the ending less jarring.

If you did not install the FEV, and did not give the vial to Elder Lyons at the start of Take it Back, you now get 200 karma when the purifier is activated (the same amount of karma you would have gotten if you gave the Virus to Elder Lyons earlier). You can no longer miss the karma for not using the FEV, just because you picked the wrong dialogue option. The FEV is also removed from the player if they install it, instead of at the start of Broken Steel. The optional files are still highly recommended.

You now lose 200 karma for letting Sarah sacrifice herself. It's a bad decision and should have some penalty. If you didn't use the FEV, this will be cancelled out by the karma bonus from that.

This mod also has two optional files. The first restores the original version of the Two Weeks Later cutscene that starts Broken Steel. The Broken Steel version of the cutscene has white text on a black background. The original game includes a version of this cutscene with black text and a white background (that matches the cutscenes from the games intro).

The second optional file removes the narration from the 3 endings added by Broken Steel where your followers activate the purifier. It replaces it with the background music, so you no longer have to deal with the true hero nonsense for picking the objectively superior choice. Both of these optionals can be used with or without the rest of the mod.
