I don't care how the journal looks, I just want it to function correctly.

You realize it works fine, there is no issues with it.
Fact is that if you don't have it in the right order or placement in your load order it is prob NOT over writing the one it needs to over write.

it has nothing to do with me as it is only a retexture edit(and Journal Fix), and it doesnt screw with the totality of the game.
      Like any edits I do.
If you read the Desc, you would know how to work/place it.

it does work, as many have used it and not have had issues at all, 15k  worth at a minimum.

Not your mod, the journal itself. The quest does not update properly if you obtain Karl's Journal at the wrong time, either too early or too late.

Your mod was the only one that came up when I did a search for Karl's Journal.

oooooh....ewwww.... eeek... Yeah... I have done that, hopefully you saved before you did the mission....so you can redo it.

yeah, sadly mine does come up first or at all.  frankly i seem to be the only one who has a decent looking journal look that fits the game, but the journal  for the game itself can get wonky, and dumb, usually you have to just play it from a previous save and see if it gets working, sometimes it is just a little bug/glitch.

Sorry mine cant help you with the game glitch, mine doesn't work on that level.

Audley's right. I haven't downloaded your mods because they tend to be just slightly off from what I would want despite being not only good textures but part of a very large output from you. I think the trolleys look phenomenal, but I just kind of wanted mine metal, unfortunately. My problems with the previous book overhaul are that I think the normals could use a bit of work to eliminate the black spots but much more important for me (I would have donwloaded them anyway if not for this) is that having all eight books named is just kind of odd for me; at least without a name I can sort of pretend that the Mojave has more than eight books being printed hundreds of times.

But in this case, YanL was bang on and I just want to work out which .esp files I want to merge in my load order before I start downloading more mods that require them -- this is without contest your best work yet (at least that I've seen). I really want these in my game before I play again.

But you deserve more recognition. You're doing a lot of great work.

I do get the whole metal thing, but I did figure though, the thin metal cage would have rotted away since they are made out of steel vs even aluminium, so over time, lets say 50-100 years through bad weather conditions of the Mojave they would have been a rust pile...that was my thought on it. Since I live in Arizona, I know my weather, and trust me they would have been dust. Cause as far as I know and from the game itself, there are no more cart makers of the world sadly . Based upon plastics, recycle recycle recycle cause it bad for the environment cause it doesnt break down. That was my thought on it, and the rusty fram is a thicker metal, that is why it lasted longer.

As for the books though, black spots? We never noticed any black spots. I nor SunnyDelight. This may be a environmental issue with your game vs what is really out there. Remember from a logic stand point, they are pre-war books, age and time has hit them as well, they are going to be in the best of shape but but damaged or worse. 250 year old books, u are gonna show some age yourself remember wrinkly old and prob smell to high heaven
Yeh, I can see the point on the names, but then again, how many factories are printing books that is a kinda a problem as well. But I do get what you are saying though.
What I do wish, is that the game didnt have so many right at the boot all over, they could have actually made it so it was more random.
But I was thinking of adding in more books over all, and having someone help me set up a script to set them randomly in the game. Prob easy for some though, not for me cause I know diddly about scripting and what is probable or doable and what isnt.

True, but then again what YanL doesnt realize is that even the ESP depending on what it does also makes a difference as well. ESP's alone dont mess things up, it is what it does and how memory intensive/game changing that said ESP is, is what counts as well.
Minor Changes which are only these 2 books changes and nothing else in the game, or my 1 change of the .38 Cal Box from a darn .357 box, isnt as bad as like a NVB ESP which changes a lot which can actually hurt a system if added ontop of a already bogged down game.
If I had any more changes to make to an ESP, barring the 2 i have already made, I totally would make a 1 whole ESP to do it, would make sense to. But I havent run across anything yet that requires such small changes like the 2 i have done.
Since since as a norm my edits are meshes and textures, nothing requires and ESP when I do something.
If another Mod Author wanted to add my Changes and such to a mod of their own all they have to do IS ASK, it can cut down on the ESP load yes, but such minor changes they prob wouldn't even do it at all and just leave things.

And thank you, it is much appreciated.

I think too much of the game is already unrealistic to go by what would actually happen too often. Ghouls are literally not possible in any respect, for example. I'm pretty sure people would have understood by now how to drive cars as well. I'm not convinced that the metal would have fared any worse than plastic but either way, I still like mine metal.

You don't need to defend your decisions; I'm sure that for a lot of people, this stuff doesn't matter and the fact that the textures look great is enough. I'm just picky about my æsthetic for this game. Same reason I'm editing Project Reality right now to restore some of the orange tint of the vanilla game, and bring the fog in really close to avoid pop-in LOD. Oh, and to bring back that green glow in Searchlight. I'm just picky. Same reason I decided not to use any Ojo textures. Also, I love your engine block retexture but didn't want it because it was too colourful for the game world i like to play in, which is a bit more drab.

I suppose it isn't really *black* spots that the normals on your books produce, save in a few cases, but I do think they could stand to be improved. It's possible that it's a result of the texture 'atlas' method you're using, which I think was a really good idea. But if it's not because of that, maybe using a normal map editor would help. Are you using that Nvidia plug-in or something better? I use MindTex 2 because it's really cheap and goes a long way towards being professional software despite its price. There's much better out there, but it gets really expensive if you want any sizable improvements over MindTex 2. Here's an example of what I meant, where the blue book's pages are the most egregious:
      https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/130/images/63924-0-1506212208.png

Again, not a deal-breaker; I didn't download your book retexture just because I didn't want it confirmed that there are only eight books in the world. You're right, it would be great to have a few hundred individual books, yeah, and it can be done. There's a mod on here that does it but a lot of people said it broke their game and I never tried it because it required an .esp, haha.

What YanL was referring to was the fact that this game only supports 139 .esp/.esm files in most cases. Frequently, you can use more, and a few people have to use fewer. I'm at like 115 and my game goes a bit weird sometimes, so once I've decided exactly what mods I don't want and which ones I should keep separate from the rest or grouped with a specific group, I plan on merging a lot of what I have down to a couple of .esp files. At this point, I will download this mod, because I really like it.

Well realistic based upon todays standards and technology yes I will agree, but then again 60 years till the bombs drop from now. And 250+ years till this happens... and aliens... so in those times realistically speaking anything can happen if one logically thinks about it. Till we can have a time machine, or a future-machine thing we dont know what will happen 200 years a from now. So ghouls, yes, could happen.

Actually I have to agree with you in this aspect, I live in Arizona(AZ), and I goto Nevada(NV) a lot....and This:
" restore some of the orange tint of the vanilla game, and bring the fog in really close to avoid pop-in LOD. Oh, and to bring back that green glow in Searchlight."
3 Reasons why you are right:
      A) During Dust storms, and storms in general there is a 'orange tint' mostly from the dust and clay that is out here in the dirt, which gets kicked up. Let alone the dust form the bombs ingeneral.
      B) The Fog Yes, Reason why, the heat and cold here in AZ and NV, tend to throw up a haze, or a very light fog from time to time that either lasts till about 11 then burns off, or stays all day till the night winds blow it away.
      C) Personally if you want it more realistic, and realizm, unless you want the 'ghoul glow' of green, do an LED Cool Blue, not a Green, that is how it is in Real life and I believe even in 200 years it will remain the same due to its high visibility.

Yeh I might dirty up the engin block, for those who want it dirty, but for the æsthetics who has a full engine block put together like that that who usually doesnt have it clean? Or as clean as possible I figured...Although I hate the way they designed the engine block period, Just hate it. If I knew Blender more I would get switching things around on that block...cause the way they have it now it will not work correctly Maybe start but certinally not run well or even good. But then again, how many engine blocks are in the game form somone count only 4-5 are in the game anyways, you barely see it. I guess parts are hard to come by LOL!

As for the Normals, those are shadows, not black spots, and that the ENB she uses, for me I dont get what she uses when she took them.
So that is why you are seeing what you are seeing. Black spots are voids in the texture itself...that has no texture covering that spot, and isnt used as a transparency to see through it.
Just so you know I will never use any nvidia product ever, NEVER EVER. If anyone else wants a reason, an nvidia card back in ;97 fried my computer to the point of a fire, because it overheated, and sparked, it was traced back to the card, and yes I got my money back and money back for new computer from nvidia... But I will never buy from them again or use any of their products. 20 years may have passed and so has technology, but my memories have not and my fear has not.

And the 100's mod I know which one you are talking about yes, it can actually bog it down so much that the game stops, and makes all saves useless. You are right it isnt a rumor. How they went about putting them in was wrong... There should be a way, logically scripted to put the books in the game or randomly choose them when they are loaded in a cell. And ONLY load those ones, nothing more. This is what I thought 'leveled lists' would be usefu for i mean same logic behind what is loaded in containers at a certain level right? Or being sold... same concept, may not be the same thing but same concept of what should be done.

Funny thing Is I run average ~160 not ESM's included 160 straight, amongst various texture edits, and mesh fixes, and I run fine on this yam of a laptop of mine, just because the warning pops up in fonv saying the whole 139 aspect blah blah, doesnt mean anything will happen jsut may happen. Now at the 165 mark there is a pop up before at the main menu, where it says the log files will not be created because of how many, that is really when you have to worry.
I do understand about some people not being able to....Like Llama has said, every computer is different, even in making willow the stuff she encountered we never did and vice versa... every computer she realized and setups are all different. Mine is just different than everyone else. *SHRUG*

You actually live near where the game is set? That's fantastic. I want to go there one day, maybe. I love this game so much and seeing photographs of the areas as they look currently is really interesting to me, and visiting would be even more interesting. But I'm not a huge fan of the heat, so...maybe not.

I know what you mean about not knowing what the future will hold, but ghouls really aren't possible. Scientists have gone through this with zombies many times, just for a bit of craic, and I've read at least one scientific article specifically on Fallout's ghouls. The basic premise is that radiation kills things. It doesn't mutate them with any benefit. You don't adapt and then live hundreds of years longer without aging and develop the ability to be healed by radiation. Likewise, zombies (and ghouls are sort of like rad-induced zombies) are decomposed bodies that walk. A person's muscles at that stage wouldn't be able to wthstand more bullets than before, nor would they have an easy time walking.

It's great entertainment but it's not possible. Fallout's lore is largely based on mid-century sci-fi concepts and what people then thought radiation may do in hundreds of years. It is in no way intended to be realistic. The realism that grounds FO 1, 2, and NV more than most other games is the chracter interaction and the politics and that sort of thing. It's deeper than possibly any other game out there (without devolving into a convoluted mess like Metal gear, which I love to death mind you).

Don't worry about the engine block. It was just an example. I like mine all rusty and brown, that's all.

I'll have to check out your book textures myself at some point. Regarding the scripts, the trouble is that beyond levelled lists, you need to do something that replaces all the loose clutter books with random ones selected from however many you will have added (minimum of about 50 I'd say). I think it's possible that someone can do something externally with a custom programme they wrote for that purpose, and that would be well beyond my knowledge. The other choices are doing it in the G.E.C.K. using a script to randomise the books (which I don't think you can do), putting a script into G.E.C.K. that randomises the books as they're loaded in the game (which I believe you can do but has room for glitches), and selecting them manually in the G.E.C.K. (please, no-one do this).

So, if you don't use the Nvidia plug-in for normal maps, what do you use? Do you paint your own heightmaps or just run your diffuse textures through a normal map generator? I thought it was the Nvidia plug-in just because you never listed anything but GIMP and Nifskope as your tools, and Nvidia's plug-in always gave me artefacts. I was using PhotoShop, not GIMP. Come to think of it, perhaps Nvidia's plug-in doesn't even work for GIMP. Not sure.

Indeed, every computer is different. A lot of people can run 200 plug-ins in this game, and other people can't even make it to the 139 mark. It doesn't seem to have much to do with the quality of your computer, either, as much as how the game interacts with some piece of hardware (or software) in it. I'm holding off for the moment, but I have about 20 mods I can't wait to install before I play again.

Yeppers. I love the place, alot of fan base, and people who live in and around "goodsprings" and "novac" are well aware of the fan base of FONV trust me. The do cater to the fan people of the game.
Do NOT go in the months from Mid April to End of Sept(give or take on this depending on how bad Monsoon season is) Nov to End of March you should be fine. It isnt hot Tops during those months maybe 90, if that, but usually a nice 75-85F for those months. At night it will get to freezing like instant ice freezing.

But then in turn, we still dont know 200 years form now.
Think about it. in 1817, 200 years ago, they said the same thing about computers, well computational objects. Just based upon that aspect technology as we know it, and science as we know it you are 100% correct it is not even capable not even by a long shot. But in the future no one know what technology and new sciences that will be found and discovered, unless we have a time machine...which would always be nice. Even if it is just for observation. Man that would be nice.

Even fallout lore's set so far into the future... that even we dont know what it will hold for us....is it possible yes(within about 20-30%max chance of sciences and techs getting that far)... Probable no, we are too damn stupid as a human race to even come across such techs unless it is sent to us by aliens, or by future us's that for damn sure.
Although I ook metal gear as more of an alternate time line, or an alternate earth vs what is what is known as our earth...so MG itself just seemed to me like what could have happen vs what will happen. Although still convoluted as you say.

Well the Engine block still bothers me on how the Devs built it to start with.
I am no mechanic but I do know my way around an engine, and re-built a few with people in the past, that is not how an engine is supposed to even look. Even with tech as advance as it is, just no.... no no no. LOL.

Yeh, I mean the script itself, since also as well... for each book, run through 50 possibles...**shudder** lets make it 20...lol. Even for my sanity. Now from my stand point since there are 2 different sizes of books, they are gonna have to be split into 2 sets, 10 each.
10 randomized books between all 4 that could be done I would think. IDK if it is possible, gonna have to ask someone if it is possible who know scripting quite well... who just looks at me with a dumb look half the time and says 'duuuh yeh it can be done... but the question is should it be done' or something alone those lines with different wording.

GIMP and it has its own normal map generator built into it. No external plugins or anything like that is needed.

LOL...I actually did Laugh Out Loud as well.
"other people can't even make it to the 139 mark. " I have seen it lower they cant even make it the 50 mark they are usually stuck at liek 45-47 give or take 1-2. And as Soon as they hit 50 BAM nothing loads lol....I didnt believe it till I saw it.... And their desktops were a supercomputer compared to my laptop so go figure.
My desktop when I had one ran ~250 no problems at all, not even a drop in lag FPS anything... I miss those days. When I get my house, that is the way I am going, this laptop is for the birds, good for work aspect, not good for gaming that is for darn sure! Well this laptop anyways.

90? That's a little high for me. If I want to enjoy myself, I would ideally have something like 60 F, but I'll accept 70, and if i happen to find myself there when it's hotter I suppose I'll just need to make the best of it. Or maybe just hang out at night and dematerialise during the days.

Oh, you mean a time machine? Sure, I'm sceptical but my mind isn't closed off to the eventual possibility. Going into the future seems pretty feasible, but I'm not sure we'll ever have a way of getting back. I meant that ghouls and zombies are impossible. Radiation just wouldn't produce these creatures that we see in Fallout. Anything mutated by radiation dies, rather than getting new powers. That's why radiation was a really popular super hero origin back in the '50s, but as people became more scientifically literate these origins were often revised. And I meant that Metal Gear was convoluted in terms of all its complex political and conspiracy angles, more than its science. It does get less scientifically sound in later entries, though. Ignoring the obvious fantasies of boss characters with super powers.

I don't mind the engine block but I know very little about engines. However, i do know enough about guns to know that the way games handle guns is ridiculous. They handle so somoothly, and the idea that you can reload and it just adds more bullets to your current magazine in the middle of combat is ludicrous. Not to mention, nobody just throws away a good empty magazine. Also, in real life, missiles in your face always kill you, 100% of the time. I don't care what level you're at.

The script for the books is the important bit. I think we should have a couple hundred varieties, but you can start off with 20 and request that other modders add to it. We can send you new textures and you can just run them through whatever script your friend gives you and then credit the modders that helped in a subsequent update. That's really how a mod like this should be done, step by step. If it never gets beyond your 20, well, then at least we have 20 books instead of 8 now. But I think it would. Maybe you could request to use some of the other book retextures. There's a porn poster mod with 650 posters in it. If porn adverts can do it, we can as well.

Ah, I thought I remembered reading that about GIMP. Did you make heightmaps for that or just use your diffuse textures? I usually make my diffuse maps into a crude heightmap, touch it up very slightly, and then pass it through MT2. If I really care a lot, I may put in more effort, but that takes about fifteen minutes on average and yields amazing results for the low effort.

Good luck with your new house. Hope your fancy new desktop doesn't hate New Vegas. Mine used to do great until I let the Windows 10 upgrade go through. I needed it for a couple of things but almost every day I curse it for doing something else less efficiently, and it's not great for New Vegas.

I don't know why you aren't getting any comments or endorsements on either this one or your previous book textures. They look miles better than vanilla which were really plain and had no character or uniqueness to them. The normal maps actually compliment the books quite well. After looking at them without the normal maps in nifskope, then reapplying them you can tell that they add a lot of grit and wear and tear. I'm curious to know which method you used to make the normal maps. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make them work properly. I've tried every method I could think of aside from baking down from a hi poly and they still turn out awful. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I cannot figure out why they don't appear correctly. I think I am saving them in the wrong format, but I am unsure. Anyhow, great work on these books Cyrus and thanks for sharing.

And YanL, i will when I am done with the stuff I need to finish.
And as well, some people dont want them all in 1 like NMC's some still want to break then apart and use individual ones from alot of different packs... this is why I am doing it like this first so people have a chance to use what they want when they want to use it. And not have to sift through 1000's of textures just to pick out the ones they want in a pack.
I know this to be true, because I have done it, and if I have done it, then so could someone else.

Oh an FYI I have only ever made 2 mods with an ESP, all the rest are just textures and meshes.
So this is only my 2nd one mind you.
