i think that lads life was a nod to the "boys life" magazines that were around, at least when i was younger, and often had a few articles relating to field survival skills
Interestingly, in france, it was translated as roughly "ladies' life nowadays". Which could be a subtle way to transcribe the very patriarcal "womens stay in the kitchen" mentality of the 60'era since many survival recipes are essentially cooking recipes. At least that's what I thought, but if you say that the english version was lad's nowaday, it's possible my brain made a needlessly complicated hypothesis.
