THIS MOD IS UNSUPPORTED - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Welcome, everybody! Today I bring you a rather big mod I have been working on, that allows the player to become Mayor and rebuild Nipton. There are quite a few features, including two (rather basic) quests, a fully voiced companion, a new radio station, four new weapons, several new pieces of apparel, some sweet collectables and a couple of cool perks, so please read carefully before posting complaints, issues or whatnot. No DLC required, only the base game.

I recommend you install New Vegas Anti Crash to avoid crashing on load. Russian translation available here.

This mod, among other things, offers you the chance to become Mayor of Nipton, with some nice benefits. Upon arrival, Nipton will look the same, but with added buildings, some of which you can explore right away. Simply visit the Mayor's office in the town hall to start rebuilding - Someone will be up there waiting to introduce you to the tasks that await. The rebuilding options are modular, so you can choose what to build and skip what you don't want.

All dialogues in the mod are voiced, some by very skilled voice actors whom I tied in my basement asked for help, some with special software, and some by reusing existing game lines.

Most building tasks require a sizeable amount of caps and extra materials. If you don't want, or can't be bothered, to gather stuff or spend caps, there's a cheat option behind the town hall that allows you to fully rebuild the town immediately. If you choose this, however, you will not become mayor and some of the mod's features will be missing, so if you're interested you will have to manually activate the "become mayor" option in the town hall office. Choose whichever you want - I won't judge.

here's a sweet video preview of the mod by SkyttsTV. Skip to 7:53 to see the mod in action.

And here's the first on a video series about the mod by Alchestbreach!

Let's get started, shall we?

>EXPLORING
Most of the buildings in Nipton will be inaccessible on arrival. But there is a handful of places you can explore beforehand to gather materials, or just for fun. These cannot be refurbished!

- Atomic 31: An old cinema that had to compete against the outdoor cinema back in the day.
- Schoolhouse: Where children learned of the world. I hated how there was only one classroom for the whole town in the town hall. Not saying that it isn't realistic (I know of places like that in the countryside) but I wanted to change it.
- Nipton Church: A place to meditate and get away from the world.
- Bau! Pet Supplies: A port of my mod for Fallout 3. The building is different, of course, but all of the new items from the mod have been added. You can find Bau! Pet Supplies inside the town hall, on the first floor, where the old classroom used to be.
- Train Station: Not much to see in here, but it's a roof over your head. This place can be upgraded to a Police HQ later.
- Clearspring Mine: A mine rumored to have diamonds, unfortunately flooded now.
- Black Mesa Research Facility: A small building where science happened before the war.

And, last but not least, some sewers, which you can explore once you make some progress on the rebuilding quest.

>REBUILDING
The rebuilding options are handled by a terminal in the Mayor's office, in the town hall. Here you can transfer the mayor ID to yourself and start rebuilding. As mayor, you have the option to hire a secretary who will keep track of your rebuilding process, a quest to get the new voiced companion, a method to tax citizens once a day (the amount of caps obtained increase as you rebuild), some special lines of dialogue with NPCs in town, and a 25% discount with merchants in Nipton.

There are plenty of areas that you can work on rebuilding. Here's a breakdown.

>Basics
- Clinic: A place to heal yourself, for a price. Activate the gurney at the back of the doctor's office. The good doctor here also sells medical supplies.
- Hotel: Here you can rent a long-time bed for 30 caps using the intercom outside the rentable room. The pass card you receive will take 30 caps from you at midnight every day until you return it. There's also a weapons merchant who has set up shop in his room.
- Nipton Apartment: A purchasable player home for one. Has all crafting amenities (cooking, reloading table, workbench), a player-owned bed, a water purifier and plenty of safe storage.

>Entertainment
- Camping Area: A small place to enjoy an outdoor meal, with a functional barbeque grill.
- Playground: Some fun for the tots. You can sit on the swings! (But not actually swing, sadly...)
- Dead Horse Inn: Finest watering hole in all of Nipton! Clean yourself in the shower, enjoy the piano music, and have a drink! The after-shower lotion gives you boosted charisma, and lasts for about 5 in-game hours.
- Sex Workers: La Belle Ghoulette and Mighty Mustang will come to Nipton. Both of them will give you some sugar regardless of gender or reputation.
- Flamingo Grand Casino: The jewel of Nipton! This small, yet fully functional casino has blackjack, roulette and slot machines. You can buy drinks from the bartender, and the manager will ban you for entering if you end up making too much profit, just like in all the other casinos in the Mojave. The casino only accepts caps, so the cashier has a basic exchange system (a merchant menu!) for people who prefer other types of currency.

>Merchants
- General Trader: Boxcar's niece arrives in town ready to peddle her wares. Boxcars will move to greener pastures after this, but if you'd like to talk to him, you can use the telephone on the second floor.
- The Dapper Threader: A clothing merchant who will sell civilian clothing and some occasional pieces of armor.
- Dire Boars Farm: Here you can repair your equipment, and buy some fresh greens.

>Population
A vital part of rebuilding is bringing new people in! Here you can find tenants for the empty houses in town. Note that two houses, which are booby-trapped in the vanilla game, will remain unused even after being cleared of traps through the secretary's terminal, so you can house followers in there or whatnot. As you make progress on the rebuilding, additional NPCs will appear and settle in Nipton. Some interesting fellows will be an NPC who plays caravan, two street performers, and a mirelurk burger seller - best fast food in the Mojave!

>Security
- Police HQ: Choosing this option will turn the old train station into the Nipton Police Headquarters. Note that this will make the door point to a different cell, so remove any items you may have left at the train station before upgrading. The prisoner here is essential, so you can beat him up for as long as you want. (I may or may not have done this during testing to release tension, and decided to leave it in...)
- Guard Ouposts: Some guards will protect the town's four entrances from unwanted visitors. These guards are set to be hostile towards the Legion, who, after all, ravaged the town to start with. Legion sympathizers have been warned!
- Reinforced Town Walls: Does what it says on the tin - metal walls for Nipton!

>AND MORE!

There are a couple of "automatic" improvements. Once the bodies are cleaned up, a small graveyard will appear near the town hall. Similarly, once you become mayor, town flags will appear around town. If you don't like the flags, they can be removed.

Look around for the new weapons! Two of them are quest-related, and the other two are laying around somewhere in the vicinity of Nipton, waiting for you.

Also, I added a new perk, Piggy, because it was something fun I wanted to try my hand at. You can get it once you're level 4. This perk allows you to enjoy a good drink, radiation-free, from toilets around the wasteland, and there's a small chance of finding small treasures such as caps or ammo while doing so.

To install, extract the contents of your downloaded file to your "Steam/SteamApps/Common/Fallout New Vegas/Data" folder. Then activate the mod through your preferred launcher by ticking the checkbox next to the esp. Or you can use the Mod Manager to download the mod automatically. To uninstall, simply delete the files from your Data folder, and you're good to go.

The player can still move around during the fade-to-black scenes because I cannot wrap my head around DisablePlayerControls. Sorry about that. If someone would like to correct the scripts to do it, it would be most appreciated.

DO NOT USE V.A.T.S. ON THE PRISONER AT THE POLICE HQ WITH MELEE OR UNARMED! The camera will just freak out for a while and you'll eventually end up glitching through the ground. You've been warned!

If you, for whatever reason, decide to keep the dead bodies and burning debris around, NPCs will constantly bump against them, as the navmesh has been repaired and stitched together around them. It's up to you, of course, but I'd recommend cleaning those up.

Sometimes the new buildings will pop into view, because I was unable to get the new LODs to work. It's nothing game-breaking, so don't worry about that. I may see if I can get it to work in the future.

Certain songs on the radio sometimes play more often than they should. I haven't managed to crack the mystery of the sophisticated scripting some mods use to prevent this, so sorry about that. Also, due to the way the radio station quest is set up, sometimes you may hear advertisements from improvements you decided to skip. In this case, it's easy to go into the music files for the mod (they're very clearly labeled at Sound/Songs/NiptonRebuiltRadio) and replace the ones you don't want with silent tracks, your own songs, or advertisements such as the ones found here.

The NPC who plays caravan does not offer rematches. I couldn't figure it out and gave up on it in the end. You can still play with her more than once, though, so it's not like it matters that much in my opinion.

Also, the pianist's and street performer's music will still play even if you distract them by causing them to attack you. Just leave them be ;)

Things will float quite a bit above the surface of the roof of Black Mesa. That's a problem with the vanilla mesh that I'm using. A (messy) way to fix it would be by removing all collision from the mesh and then placing collision markers around it manually in the GECK, but I don't really think that would be a good way to fix it, so it will stay as it is for the time being.

The mod should work with other mods that edit Nipton as long as they don't touch the navmesh, as I hacked away at it quite a bit (FNVEDIT will report about 5 deleted navmeshes). If you have issues with a mod, please let me know so I can list it here. Thank you!

The mod is compatible with Nipton Fires Extinguished - just load mine below it. In principle, however, you do not need Nipton Fires Extinguished as my mod comes with a way to remove the fires and corpses, but that is up to you.

Compatibility with ELECTRO-CITY comes pre-built into the mod, as the streetlights can be enabled and disabled at will through the junction box in the mayor's office.

The mod is very likely to cause CTD if you have NMC's high-quality texture packs, as it is really demanding on memory. Caesar's New Regime will place two legionnaires at Nipton who will sandbox around and may look a bit strange, but shouldn't cause an issue.

- I hate [thing] and [thing] and [thing]! You should have done [thing] and [thing] instead! And while you're at it remove [thing] and [thing] and add [thing] and [thing]! And [thing] is NOT LORE FRIENDLY! FIX THIS!
- This isn't a restaurant. If you don't like something, use the console to disable it, remove it with the GECK or FNVEDIT, or sell it off. In other words...

- I CTD WHEN I LOAD THE MOD OMG
- If you're getting crashes, try installing New Vegas Anti Crash. I personally do not use it but it seems to help people. Same with the master file of Speedy Resources. My mod does not require it at all (all of the resources from there were made standalone), but I figure it wouldn't hurt to pass the information along and maybe it would help someone out there.

- Why is the download so freakin' big?!
- I am using a large amount of custom content to go for a unique look. There's also voice files for dialogue and music for the radio. If you don't care about that last one, you can skip downloading the music files and just avoid activating the radio through your Pip-boy. In other words...

- Where is the goddamn mine so I can find the radio dish?!
- North of Nipton, really close by. You can head to Black Mesa and then carefully jump down the cliffs to reach it, although you'll most likely die in the process if you do it that way. It's better to go around the cliffs.

- What's with the optional files?
- The pianist at the Dead Horse Inn makes keyboard typing sounds while playing. That's part of the furniture type he's using and cannot be removed. If this bothers you, you could replace the chair with a normal one (but he will just sit all day with his hands on his lap...) or use the silent keyboard typing sounds I included as an optional in the download. Note that this will mute ALL typing sounds in the game. The other file is a pair of personalized messages that the new radio station will play once you become Mayor. Open the files in a program such as Audacity, record yourself saying something and mix the recordings until you're happy, then place the new sound file in your Data folder and overwrite. Make sure to follow the folder structure.

- Can I use some of these files on my own mod?
- A bunch of things I'm using are already modder's resources, so just look around the credits tab to look for what you'd like to use. I made most of the new meshes, however, and you can find them here if you'd like to use them.

- I used the console to [do thing you're not supposed to do] and saw [thing you're not supposed to see]! FIX IT!
- Go away...

- How do I remove the burning tires, dead bodies, blood and spiked heads?
- Activate the phone and hand radio next to the mayor's terminal.

- The new textures are too low res and ugly! I cannot stand this!
- It's what I had. I downscaled a lot of textures to help reduce the file size, but when it comes to upscaling textures, I am at a loss because I am no good at texturing, so what you see is what you get. In other words...

- How do I get the new companion? And the new radio station?
- The new voiced companion and the unique radio station are linked to a quest, which requires you to become mayor, before they are available.

- The school looks the same as the one in Goodsprings, you lazy bum! Change it!
- There is ONE schoolhouse model in the game, so that's what you get, sorry. In other words...

- The new weapons are awful! Fix them!
- Sowwee. I personally like them a lot. If you don't like them, modify them with the GECK or FNVEDIT. In other words...

- I hate the songs on the radio! Change them!
- If there's a song you don't like, go into the music files for the mod (they're very clearly labeled at Sound/Songs/NiptonRebuiltRadio) and replace the ones you don't want with silent tracks, your own songs, or advertisements such as the ones found here. In other words...

- The flag design is fugly! Can it be changed?
- Yes. Simply navigate to "Textures/_NiptonRebuilt" and edit the "TownFlag.dds" file to whatever you'd like. Alternatively, give here a try.

- Is it possible to undo improvements?
- No. I'd recommend making a save before choosing any you may not be sure of, and checking the map included in the screenshots (direct link here) to check locations for possible conflicts.

- Some NPCs are essential! I want to kill everybody, change this!
- Nope. I made them essential because they have quests or do unique stuff. If you don't like that, change it with FNVEDIT or the GECK. In other words...

- The elevator does not make sense!
- I wanted a faster way to access the office and that was the only place where I could fit both elevator doors. In other words...

- I'm lagging all over the place! Help!
- I tested this mod on a heavily modded setup, on a mid-range gaming laptop. The game has some lag when you first enter the town or after using the instant rebuilt option. There are a lot of new items and NPCs around town, so if you're playing on a coal-powered machine, you will definitively have some performance loss. I'd recommend disabling the streetlights to save some memory usage. In other words...

- I went to use the cheat option and the hand radio slipped into the puddle. Now I can't reach it. Help!
- Use the console to disable the player collision (TCL) and reach for it. Then go back up and enter TCL into the console again to get the collision back to normal.

- There's a lot of potty mouth going on in this mod and I don't like it!
- Fallout: New Vegas is a mature-rated game. If you're annoyed by the language, change it with the GECK or FNVEDIT. In other words...

- Can you add more NPCs to the town?
- I'm already pushing what my own system can handle - in fact, I crashed rather violently the first time I enabled all the new NPCs for testing, as my system ran out of memory, so I culled the number of NPCs to the maximum that wouldn't make my game crash. There are some unused NPCs you'll find in the game files, so feel free to enable them with the GECK or FNVEDIT if you have a better systen than me.

- The player home is too small, make it bigger!
- Nope. I wanted it to be a house for one. If you want to put more beds or whatnot, do it yourself with the GECK or FNVEDIT. In other words...

- I want to rebuild, but I don't want to become mayor! Can I give up the role as mayor after I'm done rebuilding?
- Use the cheat option. I am not planning on making an option to stop being mayor at the moment, but if someone wants to make a patch for it, they're certainly welcome to do so.

- Can I make a patch that changes something about the mod and upload it to the Nexus?
- Most certainly! Make sure to upload only your .esp and none of the meshes, textures or sounds, however.

- I went looking into the mod and I saw you have a truckload of scripts! I don't like scripted mods! Remove these scripts at once!
- About 99% of the scripts are OnActivate and simply show messages. There's only one script I can remember right now that is somewhat constant, and that's the one for renting the bed at the hotel. If this bothers you, just avoid renting it, and remove some of the scripts with FNVEDIT or the GECK, but don't come crying if the mod breaks. In other words...

- I hate everything being static! I wanna pick things up!
- I don't like knocking things around all the time, and New Vegas has plenty of clutter everywhere already. In other words...

- You monster, you broke the Wild Wasteland encounter! Boo!
- Did I? I left it untouched - all I did was change the building next to it. And if that's what you mean...

- Why is the mod not an .esm to fix mismatched tones and that kind of thing?
- Believe me, I tried. I spent almost a whole day testing, but for some reason, turning the mod into an .esm broke several activators needed for the quests to proceed. If anybody wants to help out with this, it would be most appreciated!

- FNVEDIT reports undeleted navmeshes. Fix these, you noob!
- Sowwee, but I had to hack away at the navmesh to prevent NPCs from bumping into walls and such. I am not planning on reverting this, sorry. In other words...

-The prices are too expensive/too cheap!
- I think the prices are fair considering what you get. If there are enough complaints I may make some versions with different prices, but until then, I'm afraid they'll stay as they are. In other words...

- Is this compatible with [mod]?
- If you have a mod that makes heavy changes to Nipton, there could be issues, especially if they alter the navmesh. This could lead to crashing to desktop on arrival. If you use The Rockwell Pursuit, you should finish the first 2-3 quests for Rockwell to avoid spawning enemies. If you find any other conflicts, let me know so I can list them here.

- How come the mod looks different in my game than your screenshots?
- I am using several retextures in my own game, SweetFX and Grass is always Greener, so results may vary.

- The mod is awful/glitchy/buggy/etc. I am going to uninstall it and I must let everybody know!
- Sad to see you go~

- The mod sucks!
- So does a vaccuum cleaner ;)
