I second this. I collect all the ruined books I find. I get a weird feeling seeing ruined books just lying around in destroyed buildings - its like somebody put a lot of hard work into making something to be read, and in a flash all that hard work is rendered worthless. I can't help but sometimes think of them as being some of the books that made the biggest impact on my life, like 1984 and To Kill a Mockingbird, and how the authors would be upset if they knew that this is how their legacy would be treated.
I also collect teddy bears, and not because of any similarly depressing reason - I just like teddies
