Check FNVedit, you will see that all it does is change a variable "has backpack, medium" to "medium" only. -Has backpack- is what causes the problem. He removed it.
The reason why the ranger patrol armor was tagged as having a backpack is because of the massive clipping issues you get otherwise, same as the NCR Ranger Combat Armor, whose "bugfix" is precisely checking its backpack box.
still no luck... I've installed the NVSE and ran it through the FOMM, but still CTD just after the launcher. And I think Steam should automatically update the game in time...?
Hmm. The only other things I can envision would be if you're not patched up to the most recent version of New Vegas... or if you didn't have NVSE installed. The fix is extremely simple, so I can't imagine how NVSE would be involved, but I have it, and there's the remote chance that somehow it's affected the file.
Oops, still not working even disabling that mod... BTW it should not be the problem of any single saves, since the game CTD upon starting up(just after the game launcher), and I don't keep many saves(basically use autosave only, and a seperate save as a backup file)

nvm, the problem was in the community patch.
