I'm not an actual modder, just a casual user, but I think I know the answer to this one. For things like skin mods especially, archive invalidation is needed because it basically tells the game to ignore the original (vanilla) game files regarding the textures you're trying to replace, so that the system runs the textures you've added in instead. Keeps the skin from showing up pink, or rapidly shifting between textures, or just being an exclamation mark. If someone more knowledgeable thinks I'm wrong, please do respond with a correction.
for most bethesda games it try to use an vanilla texture so you get weird low res texture on the item or low res clothe painted on the skin for body replacer
guys if you're using mo2, none of the archiveinvalidation mods are necessary. Go to profiles, then enable automatic archiveinvalidation there. Do not use this mod or anything else that aims to do the same thing, it can actually be the cause for the red triangle textures. I learned this the hard way. Literally every ini modification I've made for this did nothing useful cause i'm using mo2.
I know it's been months and months since you posted this, but your comment saved me hours of head scratching. Now I can finally play the damn game. Seems like an obvious solution now, but hey, we all have our brain farts.
Omg, after many try, finally it work for me My way is I copy to all 3 files : Fallout.ini, FalloutPrefs.ini, Fallout_default.ini. And remove read-only from all 3.
I've tried this method, I've tried changing just the default, I've tried changing just the document folders, I've tried the 'button' version, I've tried changing my body type, skin, everything I can think of... weird shorts is always a constant and then my game becomes unplayable. As soon as i leave doc michells, pink screen of crash. I give up. though i love this game to death, i'm going back to skyrim.
Well, after messing around with this and a few months break from my favorite game, this is the proper way. You MUST make sure all files are not "Read only" to begin with, and all three files MUST be written identically, easy to copy / paste this. Had the weird shorts issue and the triple boob issue for a bit before i finally re-read all this. may feel like a derp, but I got my Vegas back!
YES!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was teasing the idea of trying something like that, but didn't think it would work, and honestly I wasn't sure where to start.

"4.) Place Fallout - ArchiveInvalidation.bsa into your \Fallout 3\Data\ folder. "
did you mean Fallout New Vegas?
why does retexturing like https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/38342 needs this ?

For what ever reason no one puts the whole {Archive} part just the last line.
