May File of the Month interview with Motseer

  • Comment
Today we bring you an interview with Motseer whose TnT Underarmors mod won file of the month in May. So put on your eyeballs and enjoy the read below.

Q:So Motseer, tell us a little about your self. What other games do you like? Where do you live. Anything you feel like mentioning to us. =D
A:About myself, in a nutshell - middle aged denizen of the mid-west (USA), former Marine, career electrician, retired early due to broken knees, avid rpg gamer and recent modding enthusiast. I started modding as a serious hobby a little over a year ago because I so admired the work Thor925 was producing for DAO that I asked if there was any way I could help out. Thor925 is one of those rare modders who freely share their work and knowledge with others and over time he helped me hone my skills. The working relationship has developed to the point that the two of us are the core of "Thor 'n Thunderhammer" or TnT mods, though he's still the "master" and I the "grasshopper".

Q:Tell us what inspired you to create these new sets of under-armors?
A:The idea for combining meshes to produce the over/underarmor mods was actually Thor925's brainchild. I think it evolved from his frustration at the lack of tools to produce new meshes for DA2. We whiteboarded the concept a bit and he handed it off to me to produce and publish. As it turned out, the concept makes for almost limitless mixing and matching of the under/over armors. When we gain the tools to produce new meshes the concept will truly make some fantastic outfits possible.

Q:Since this mod adds unique new items to the game, what were some of the obstacles you encountered?
A:There weren't any "obstacles" but the ticklish part was deciding on the best method of deployment to the game. It's not usually a good idea (IMO) to "replace" vanilla game items and the rewards system in DA2 is easy to use but has a lot of potential to conflict with other mods. Adding chests is difficult without a tool-set and adding items to vendors is just not very practical. With TnT Underarmors I decided on replacing the starting game armor with a set of under-armor to fit the character class since that armor was more or less throw away. There is also a script to allow the player to add the other pieces by using the console. This is very nice for those who want to mix and match and when combined with the very nice "Equip Your Party" mod lets you outfit your followers as well.

Q:What sort of tools did you use to make the models and textures?
A:Most folks use Adobe Photoshop for textures but I use PaintShop Pro - it's not a better tool, I'm just used to it. I used GDApp for editing .gda files, Gff Editor for exporting files from the game and editing modeling files, and TlkEdit for editing .uti files.

Q:It appears you are still updating this mod, but how much of your life has it consumed so far?
A:hehehehehehehehehe......a lot. ;P

Q:Do you have any long term plans for the mod that your fans may not know about? Or are there any things you have just been considering adding but have not decided?
A:Lot's of folks already know about the upcoming versions for the Adult section which actually began with Thor's release of DA2 TnT Bodyshop and will soon see the release of my Dragonborne overarmor. After that... well, we have to save some surprises, eh? But folks can count on some unique and quality mods from TnT.

Q:Do you have any other mods you are planning on, or have already on the Nexus that you want to tell us about?
A:This is where I shamelessly plug TnT mods? Of course it is:
TnT_Meredith_Armor
TnT Underarmors
DA2 TnT Isabella Armor
DA2 TnT Merrill Robes
DA2_TnT_BodyShop
DA2_TnT_UnderClothing
Team TnT Armourers
TnT Risque Champions
TnT Risque Champions - Adult
EnArmored
Team TnT Armors
TnT Black Widow
Armory
Blade Dancer

Q:Do you have any advice for aspiring mod authors?
A:First and foremost, mod for yourself. If it works in your game and makes the game more enjoyable for you there will be others who will like it and want to use it too. If you want to become a serious modder you should look to find someone to learn from and maybe even hookup with. If you look at the best mods on the Nexus you will find that many are collaborations between a number of modders. There is always strength in numbers but the biggest advantage to cooperation and collaboration is the increase in knowledge base.

Q:Last, but not least. Do you have anything else you want to say to the readers out there?"
A:I guess the one comment I would like to make to the general public on the Nexus is simply to encourage folks to comment, endorse and vote. You can't imagine how much modders appreciate your feedback and endorsements until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Suffice to say, "We appreciate your comments, endorsements and votes almost as much as the disgusting piles of money we make modding. Finally, and seriously, "Thanks to all the fans of TnT who supported TnT Underarmors and made it the May 2011 File of the Month. If it weren't for folks like you we wouldn't bother."

Well, we hope you all enjoyed the interview. I also would like to thank Motseer very much for taking the time out of his schedule to do the interview for us. We will see you all again soon for the next File of the Month interview.
