Something to note is that Romans post Scipio Africanus (236–183 BC) considered beards to be unseemly on a Roman up until the very late stage of the empire. They decided it was too 'Greek'. -_- And wanted to differentiate themselves from them. The only time it was acceptable to grow them out was in times of mourning or when you were in some type of condemnation period.
However considering that the Empire in the game has a lot of Byzantine (Greek) influences I think it can definitely fit in this game. Also, your parents just died and little brother and sister were abducted so, totally fits.
