Quick Overview
This mod changes the equipment rosters and skills for the base game's main culture troop lines

These are save friendly mods, so feel free to install/uninstall at any time

NOT dependent on any other mods, can probably also use with earlier versions of game (I have not tested)

I leave it to your discretion to determine if it is compatible or not with other troop mods you may have. This only mods the currently existing main troops units in the base game, no other troops such as Bandits, Mercenaries, or Minor Clans are modified. I recommend placing near bottom of Load Order since these files are not truly loaded until in-game or in Custom Battles

*These mods effectively include my earlier Revised Recruits mod, so having that mod installed is redundant
**Recommend pairing with Revised Mercenaries mod for overall better experience, but the choice is yours

Ultimately this mod aims to achieve better in-game battle balance. However it also aims to give units appropriate culture equipment where possible, while increasing item diversity amongst said units at the same time. (This means more items as potential high quality gear loot!) It also seeks to make sure all units have a unique and established role of some kind; Banner Knights are best lancers, Vlandian Pikemen aren't totally useless without spear bracing, etc.

Also despite the changes I've made the A.I. is still very prone to make "tactical errors", so don't expect huge improvements with large A.I. army battles in a lot of cases. Some units are still better than others (was not striving for perfect balance), but units of the same type/tier should at least be competitive with each other and not get completely stomped. Obviously there are many factors at play such as skills perks and banners, so your mileage may vary!

Description
All recruits have been given low tier military weapons (swords, spears, axes, maces) and roughly every 2 out of 5 recruits will have a low quality shield appropriate to their culture.

All Tier 3 and above Archer units carry two quivers of arrows.

There are TWO main versions of this mod: Revised Troops and Revised Troops (New Units)

  • Revised Troops aims to be very base game friendly with no radical troops changes of any kind (just simple tweaking for balance, etc.)
  • Revised Troops (New Units) alters existing lines somewhat more so there are less redundant trees in the game as a whole. Primarily alters Sturgia trees, but Khuzait and Vlandia as well.

While you may have both mod versions downloaded ONLY ENABLE ONE AT A TIME! Revised Troops OR Revised Troops (New Units), if you enable both the last file loaded will overwrite the other.

If a particular tree/change is not to your liking I have included separate files for each culture now under Optional Files so you can mix and match as you see fit.

Aserai
  • Aserai Tribesman was given 2 sword sets and proper mace. Before only had wooden hammers, which resulted in extremely poor combat performance.
  • Aserai Mamluke Regular (now "Mamluke Horseman " to more easily distinguish) has much better armor with Southern Reinforced Short Mail
  • Aserai Noble Line: Adjusted shields for better progression. Various armor changes for Veteran and Vanguard Faris, some skill redistribution as well to improve melee performance. Veteran and Vanguard have 1 mace set.

Battania
  • All Battanian footman have some kind of throwing weapon, this is so you can more effectively "skirmish" with Battanian infantry formations.
  • Helmets have been changed for almost all Battanian infantry to make better use of new helmets (some units like Oathsworn and Horseman had very poor head armor for Tier 5)
  • Wood Runner has more appropriate shield
  • Battanian Scout has better weapons
  • Battanian Horseman was significantly up-armored with "Warlord Armor" so it can stand up better to other Tier 5 Melee Cavalry
  • Mounted Skirmisher has two sets of javelins again
  • Battanian Noble Line: minor armor changes, but significantly reduced Fian Champion's Two-Handed skill (160) to be a less overpowering melee unit.

Empire
  • Armor redistribution among Tier 2-3 units to make better use of multiple sets.
  • Trained Infantryman has higher armor now with leather sets and mail coifs
  • Menavliations carry javelins in place of pila - this is so Empire has some thrown weapon capability and to make more comparable to other shock troops
  • Imperial Crossbowman has a small shield
  • Palatine Guards have their helmet back (adjusted face values slightly for less clipping)
  • Bucellarii have been significantly upgraded in terms of armor and horse. Should be competitive with other Tier 5 Horse Archers.
  • Imperial Noble Line: minor armor changes, Cataphracts carry a set of maces again

Khuzait
  • Mostly minor armor changes for troops, Spear Infantry and Darkhan have appropriate mace sets for their tiers
  • Khuzait Darkhan has old helmet back (I think Darkhan and Khan's Guard having same helmet is redundant - sorry Facemask fans!)
  • Khuzait Noble Line: Torguud, Kheshig, and Khan's Guard sets have been changed significantly. Glaives have been removed and replaced with more appropriate Lances. Some skill redistribution as well. Khuzait Noble line still remains the top Horse Archer line and is still fairly competent in melee, just not overpowered.

* New Units version changes Khuzait Noble line into what I will call "Shock Cavalry"; that is lightly armored melee cavalry equipped with Glaives. Very powerful in the right situations, but not invincible, as they will struggle with tight infantry formations/enemy shock troops and are vulnerable to missile fire.

Sturgia
  • Mostly minor armor and weapon changes
  • Sturgian Soldier was very powerful at Tier 3 before due to all axes, now has 2 sword sets and 1 axe set
  • Veteran Bowman has decent bow with Heavy Recurve Bow
  • Renamed Sturgian Harderned Brigand to "Sturgian Raider" and Sturgian Horse Raider to "Sturgian Hardened Raider" for more sensible distinction
  • Sturgian Raider units have two sets of javelins

* New Units version - Heavy Axemen becomes "Sturgian Veteran Warrior" with 1 set of throwing axes replaced by spear. The Sturgian Heavy Spearman is then replaced with Sturgian Druzhinnik Cavalry to maintain appropriate cavalry ratio for Sturgia.

Slight changes to Varyag Veteran appearence

Druzhinnik is replaced with "Varyag Rekkr", Druzhinnik Champion replaced with "Varyag Seggr" New Units version. These are melee infantry carrying sword and shield plus two handed axes making them the ultimate infantry units. They can be overwhelmed by large numbers of other shock troops and are weak to cavalry charges due to no spears. This is both to keep them in check for balance and make sure they stick with axe in most melee fights.

Vlandia

  • Mostly minor armor and weapons changes
  • Vlandian Crossbowman has a heater shield
  • Billman has Billhook & Throwing Axes
  • Pikeman now carries Pike & Short Bill allowing the unit to be a modest shock troop when engaging other infantry (will beat Vlandian Sergeant 1v1 typically)
  • Vlandian Vanguard up-armored to be more comparable to Vlandian Champion
  • Vlandian Noble Line: Banner Knight has more armor, fairly even match for Cataphracts/Druzhinniks

* New Units version alters Light Cavalry into "Shock Cavalry" armed with pikes and two-handed swords. I felt Light Cavalry line being a lesser version of Noble Line more or less made the whole line rather pointless. As Shock Cavalry they are very good in close quarters melee defeating most other melee cavalry, but struggle against ranged units due to no shield and light armor.

New Units mod version breakdown:

Khuzait Noble Line "Shock Cavalry"

Vlandia Light Cavalry Line "Shock Cavalry"

Sturgia Noble Line "Heavy Infantry"
