This article covers general information about the module and terms that I use across the rest of the manual. This is very much “design intentions for reference” material, but it should give you an idea of what the design intention was and provide references for certain technical aspects.

  • Manual: Aserai Sultanate

    (For DRM Version 5.0.6)
    Updated 12/27/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
    ** Defense-Stripping Combined Arms
** Close-In Irregulars and Specialized Elites
** Active Command needed for Maximum Effect

    OVERVIEW:
Desert warfare, for the Banu Asera, is far more about deception than the more typical Imperial or Vlandian perception. Brute force is of course a great asset, but brute force alone means nothing if the enemy sees it coming a mile away and acts to mitigate it. The best strikes are those that the enemy does not see coming, those that force the enemy to march to an Aserai fife. They have a wide toolbox with which to do this, but one that they need to use consciously.

The Aserai rely heavily on their traditional tribal warriors, a levy of co...

  • Manual: Principality of Sturgia

    (For DRM Version 5.0.6)
    Updated 12/22/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
** Heavy Infantry and Mobile Cavalry
    ** Noble Melee Infantry
    ** Widespread Anti-Shield Weaponry

    OVERVIEW:

The Principality of Sturgia stands as a melting pot, one that has thoroughly blended the native peoples such as the Vaegirs with their Nordic mercenaries-turned-masters. They are not the Kingdom of Nords that will one day be forged by Gundig Hairy-Breeks, but rather their own peoples: a merchant realm of many tribes whose hired muscle is increasingly making up their ruling class. If any culture of Calradia expresses the adventurers turned rulers best, it is Sturgia.

The bulk of Sturgia’s people are still natives, including but not limited to tribes lik...

  • Manual: Calradian Troops

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Updated: 11/12/2023

The Calradian people are distinct from the Empire in that the Empire can collapse without the Calradians vanishing. Should the Empire fall, the Calradians will persist and live on. To that end, they will have a select number of troops that are used by various factions as they capture Imperial territory.

These troops should not be looked at so much as a specific faction as much as being a replacement for the Empire as it falls.

    Standard Calradian Units
These troops are used even while the Empire still persists and can be seen as being agnostic to the existence of the Empire. They are used for the purposes of Empire faction units for quests such as “Lord Needs Troops”, filling in militias, ...

  • Manual: Kingdom of Battania

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Updated 11/15/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
    ** High-Low Glass Cannons
    ** Hit Hard, Limited Shields
    ** Varied Noble Unit Types

    OVERVIEW:

Battania is no mere rump state in the mountains, though the crumbling ruins of grand castles that they live in tends to fool most people. No, Battania is a realm resurgent under its High King: a realm united once more. Local chiefs may see themselves as king of their own kingdom, but they recognize Caladog’s power, and with the clans united as their neighbors fight, what grudges with the Empire can the sons of Battania settle? There is song, glory, and heads to be won in such an affair, and there are still lands the Battanians consider theirs to take back.

    The Batt...

  • Manual: Khuzait Khanate

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Updated 11/15/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
    ** Cavalry Supremacy
    ** Excel in Open Terrain
    ** Limited Infantry Ranks

    OVERVIEW:
The Khuzait Khanate are a young steppe confederation, relatively speaking, unified under the banner of the Urkhunait clan who then began a spree of conquests across the eastern lands of the Calradic Empire. These steppes had been lightly defended, and so the thunder of the Khanate was one barely heard by a western-focused Empire. Not aiding matters at all is that many of the Khuzait clans had been hired or had raided these territories before, so they had a degree of insider knowledge or contacts. With this successful conquest, however, the Khuzaits have had to begin the process of transitioning to a s...

  • Manual: Kingdom of Vlandia

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Updated 11/15/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
    ** Role-Focused “Fire-and-Forget” Troops
    ** Heavily Stratified Feudal Recruitment
    ** Limited Anti-Defense Weapon Choices

    OVERVIEW:

The Vlandians came to Calradia as adventurers, taking the silver of the Empire to serve in their armies first as Nordic foot, then accepting payment in land as the Empire declined similar to other groups of barbarians. But while they learned much from the Empire, the Vlandians never truly assimilated prior to Osrac Iron-Arm’s rebellion. Instead, they created their own realm governed through feudalism - or rather, the vast number of legal customs that are bundled together under this neologism.

Militarily, the Vlandians are a comb...

  • Manual: Empire Auxiliaries

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Last Updated: 11/12/12023

The Calradic Empire has employed auxiliaries for generations, one of their most effective tools of conquest and a way to integrate conquered populations into the Empire as citizens. The Empire has begun to contract in recent years, limiting access to these auxiliaries, but if the Empire expands it is still possible to recruit them.

By default, these troops are only available to the Southern, Northern, and Western Empire kingdoms, so a player-led Imperial faction may not recruit these unless a player kingdom configuration is put into the ATC configuration file.

These units are generally organized by geography, so for example “Highland” instead of “Battanian”. They will all provide access to s...

  • Manual: Empire of Calradia

    (For DRM Version 5.0.2)
    Updated 11/12/2023

    AT A GLANCE:
    ** Flexible Combined Arms
    ** Durable Cavalry
** Settlement Ownership Heavily Affects Units

    OVERVIEW:
The Empire of Calradia has made use of a professional army for centuries, the Calradic Legions feared across and beyond the continent for their discipline and flexibility. Though Emperor Arenicos stood down the last standing legions after Neretzes’ Folly, the Empire’s war machine is not as hapless as the wolves circling it believe. Its armies may be increasingly privatized by the various local archons, it may be increasingly relying on land grants such as pronoia and other pseudo-feudal practices to support their elite troops, but the army remains one of the most professional in...

  • Manual: Mercenaries and Bandits

    (For DRM version 4.2.2)
    Updated: 1/28/2023

This manual covers the mercenaries and bandit units that DRM has updated or changed.

    MERCENARIES

Mercenary troops in DRM typically do not follow the pattern of being an upgrade tree, instead serving as fully trained specialists ready to hire and use in combat or units that fill a niche in the regions they are hired in. They command a high price up front, with the majority of them coming as T4 or T5 units, but they all come with at the very least improved combat skills if not a significant step up in unit equipment quality to warrant this.

Be mindful that mercenaries have a price increase approximately equivalent to one tier of wages, so a T4 mercenary will demand the wages of a standard T5 unit...

  • Manual: Cross-Factional Units

Cross-Faction units are troops that are available to multiple factions, usually as a result of taking the territory of other cultures. These are intended to consist of units that complement the victorious faction and to be their recruitment option in lieu of the defeated faction’s units.
Each tree is a bit different, though. Some trees are wholly self-contained, representing a certain unique troop. Others may feed into otherwise-inaccessible units from multiple angles such as Vlandikon and Graal Knights being able to become Imperial Knights. In general, however, they are meant to represent changes that can occur during conquests rather than just having the victors recruit the loser’s units. They will also often be used in Minor Factions, to ensure there’s some usage of them eve...
