About this video

On this day, 17 years ago, on May 1st of 2002, we stepped ashore an alien land, strange and unique, unlike anything that had come before and unlike anything that has come since. Left to our own devices, we stumbled through the mists of the unknown, meeting each strange new sight, each alien new creature with a sense of awe, not sure where to go, but each of us making our own journey through the fog.

This was, for so many of us, the beginning of an exciting adventure, one that has continued for 17 years. This was Morrowind, the third in a relatively obscure series from a failing developer, which would go on to sell millions of copies, save Bethesda Softworks from bankruptcy, paving the way for every Bethesda game we've since enjoyed, and leaving a permanent mark on the hearts and minds of those who first stumbled upon its alien shores.

But Morrowind was more than a game, it was also a tool, a tool that could be used to build entire worlds, craft new adventures, create epic dungeons, and design new experiences. In so many ways, Morrowind marked the popularization of modding, and for various reasons, that has kept so many of us on this amazing journey that is Morrowind, even 17 years later, for even though we've explored every city, fought through every dungeon, and completed every quest, there is still more to see, more to add, more to experience with the worlds we've built, and the worlds we've yet to create.

For even after 17 years, the future of Morrowind and the future of modding is intertwined, as we strive to improve everything from the tiniest blade of grass to the tallest tower, as we are driven to build new game engines and new scripting mechanics, and as we finally achieve the ability to play together in each other's worlds, we are always still dreaming of more things to come, and always there will be something new to add, something to improve, something to create to make this game, this home of ours, better than ever before!

And so, on today of all days, it seems more than fitting to celebrate Morrowind's 17th anniversary, by announcing the 5th Annual Morrowind May Modathon Month Modding Competition, for what better way is there to celebrate this game we all love, this game that's become a second home to so many of us, than to build upon it and make it even greater?

As always, this year's Modathon is a month-long modding competition for the community. And as always, every participating mod released in May on the Nexus, The Assimilation Lab and GHF will be entered to win a ton of indie and even triple A games from the Morrowind Modding Showcases channel.

But anyway, how can you participate? It's easy, when you go to release your mod on the Nexus or The Assimilation Lab or GHF, just leave a line at the top that says "Part of the May Modathon Month" or if you're uploading on the Nexus, you can use the May Modathon 2019 tag, and you'll automatically be entered to win! And don't worry, if you don't know how to mod, you can check out our Let's Mod Morrowind series to learn a lot of the basics! Every mod has a shot at winning, so why not give it a try!

Remember, this competition only applies to mods released in May! So let's all get modding, and give Morrowind the proper 17th anniversary celebration it so rightfully deserves by making it even better than ever with a ton of new content!
