Keytars
for OpenMW 0.49

Overview

This mod introduces fully working, playable keytars to the world of Morrowind. With a configurable hotkey, they'll play a sweet instrumental of young scrolls' Dagothwave, causing nearby NPCs to dance uncontrollably!

Additionally, the mod adds bard follower AI. Followers who are holding keytars will play them during combat instead of attacking, granting you a passive inspiration buff that fortifies your luck. Any follower you give a keytar will play it, but the mod adds one keytarist by default, the Argonian Shreds-Like-Crazy, who can be found in Balmora's Eight Plates inn.

Keytars can be found in the following locations:

Show

  • Arkngthand
  • Odrosal
  • Vemynal
  • Dagoth Ur
Or if you'd rather just spawn one in, their id is "_rlts_wep_keytar".

Adding Custom Music

The mod supports changing out Dagothwave for any music file, and even has built-in length and BPM detection for .wav files.

  • Ideally, trim the file so it starts and ends on a beat
  • Add the file to sound/keytar/
  • Restart your game (only necessary when initially adding the file so the game recognizes it)
  • Type in the file name in the mod's config menu
  • Manually input the BPM and music length (as precise as possible), OR select a genre and use the auto-detect feature if the file is a .wav.
  • If BPM calculation is wrong for given genre, try changing genre to Complex. It may also be a multiple of the actual BPM, so try various multiples (arithmetic expressions work in the input boxes!)

Installation

This mod currently requires OpenMW 0.49. A future MWSE port is possible, but is not currently being made.

  • Place the contents of "00 Core" into your Data Files folder, or add the folder as a data directory in the OpenMW launcher.
  • If you want to use the lore-friendly textures, place the contents of "01 Lore-Friendly Textures" into your Data Files folder, overwriting if needed, or add them as a data directory below "00 Core" in the OpenMW launcher.
  • Enable "keytar.ESP" and "keytar.omwscripts" in your load order.
  • In your OpenMW launcher, go to Settings > Visuals > Animations and make sure "Use Additional Animation Sources" is checked. "Smooth Animation Transitions" is also highly recommended but not required.

Removal

Simply remove the mod's files from your Data Files folder or unlink them in the OpenMW launcher.

Compatibility

Dynamic Music: If you have background music silencing enabled while keytarists are playing, I recommend making the re-silence interval shorter because Dynamic Music can override the currently playing music at random.

ReAnimation: Make sure to use the latest (4/7/2025+) version of that mod. Older versions will throw an error and stop this mod's animations from playing.

Compatibility with mods that modify follower AI has not been tested. The mod is highly configurable, though, and you can likely disable most AI features that would cause conflicts.
