Overview -

In Tamriel Rebuilt, the Barrister’s Guild is a non-joinable side faction in which you can do some miscellaneous quests involving various barristers.  Currently, there are guild offices in Old Ebonheart and Firewatch.  However I’ve always wondered what they do and how they do it.  For example, Reynant Alciente in the OE Barristers Guild (now Marsh & Ellerian as of TR 24.12) can clear your bounty for 400 gold after you complete a certain TR quest.  How is this possible?

This mod is intended at least in part to give my interpretation of the answer in an exciting and fun yet (hopefully) lore-friendly manner.  It makes Tamriel Data's Barristers Guild into a joinable faction (without changing it), with a story-driven quest chain centered at Marsh & Ellerian in Old Ebonheart dealing with matters of law in Morrowind.

You will be asked to help clients ranging from rogues and thieves and necromancers to nobles like the Duke of Deshaan himself.  These clients may be innocent or guilty of a crime, or they may simply be asking you for legal advice.  They may come to you to reduce a fine they paid for stealing a valuable item, to get their jail sentences reduced or reversed for theft or murders, to seek justice against a criminal that freely walks the streets by revealing their crimes, or even to avoid execution or political turmoil by proving the legality of their actions.  Some of the quests may even have an overarching theme, with a climactic reveal and a satisfying (or not so satisfying) conclusion.  It’s entirely up to you how these quests will end.

Whatever the case may be, your duties in each quest will primarily be to investigate the case as you collect evidence to help your client.  Although there are one or two quests where you actually argue your case before the magistrate, most of the time you’ll be out and about.  Some testimony or evidence may be easy to get; others not so much.  You may find yourself relying on speechcraft or personality in one case to convince a witness to get the testimony you need, while in another case you may have to rely on stealth or illusion.  You may even find yourself fighting your way out of a mess or two.  Some testimony or evidence you find may even be damaging for your client.  Anything may go when it comes to trying to resolve your client’s legal problems.

Requirements Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmoon, Tamriel Data (version 12) and Tamriel Rebuilt (version 25.05) - special thanks goes to the Project Tamriel Rebuilt team for developing the assets and world that allowed me to make this mod possible!

Recommendation - if you're a new character, you can get a better immersive experience if you play as a barrister class using Tiny Plesiosaur's All Races and Classes Unlocked - Vanilla and Tamriel_Data

How to Start - head to Old Ebonheart and ask around about latest rumors until you're pointed to Marsh & Ellerian, or just go there directly. When you're there, speak with Reynant Alciente about the topic "help our law office".
- He'll get you started after you complete his quest A Criminal Lawyer, assuming you don't betray him to Stabby-Jak Merrus (causing him to disable) and Reynant doesn't die.  If you've already done this quest, see "Existing Characters" for more information below.

Compatibility - this mod is compatible with both vanilla/MWSE and OpenMW (tested at least on 0.49 RC4).  However, the last quest might give you a bit more anxiety on OpenMW due to certain NPC behavior, but it makes it more fun in my opinion.

Level Requirement - the quests initially can be started at level 1, but they ramp up in difficulty as the questline progresses so I imposed a level lock - you need to be at least level 5 to complete the entire questline
- Since the existing faction in TD was not intended to be joinable and I didn't create a new one for existing character compatibility reasons, I couldn't put quest rank locks, so instead I put quest level locks.  Of course, level 5 is only the requirement -- it's really dependent on skill (the endgame quests are not easy).

Existing Characters/Quest Conflicts - new and returning characters can play the full mod.  However, there are some quests in TR that may conflict with, or block, this questline, depending on what the player did. I have listed these conflicts below.  If any of them apply to your existing character, I'd suggest making a new one for this mod to get the full questline experience.  The following apply to existing chars:

  • Starting the Mod - to start the questline, the journal index of A Criminal Lawyer must be 40 (the good path, i.e., you stopped Stabby and didn't cause Reynant to flee or die).  However, if you already betrayed him to Stabby Jak and he hasn't died (he only disabled), you can fix this in console. Just enable Reynant ("TR_m3_Reynant Alciente"->Enable) and reduce the journal entry ("setjournalindex TR_m3_OE_CriminalLawyer 40").
  • Optional TR Hook QuestsJudge and Jury / Hlarsis v Alju-Deekus / Belated Justice - these quests are optional, but have been hooked early into the questline due to their connection with Marsh & Ellerian.  However, they are still recommended to play through, since your character may receive different rewards from the guild depending on your choices in these quests.  Therefore, a new character may benefit more from this. Of course, if your existing character has already completed the quests beforehand, no problem - the mod will recognize it and move forward.  You won't be able to get the best reward, but it's not a blocker.
  • Saves From Prior TR Versions May Be Incompatible - this questline requires at least TR 25.05.  If your existing character is from an older TR version that was updated mid-save and visited the Council Club in old Andothren, the old Barrister Guild, or Merxia Vendicci's manor in OE, then this questline will likely break.
    - Andothren was renamed to Bal Foyen in 25.05, and the Guild of Barristers and Vendicci manor cells were renamed to new cells in 24.12, so existing characters who visited the old cells may find necessary characters and items spawning in the new cells with no way to access them. (See Posts.)
  • Questline Blockers/Full Stops - the questline will come to a full stop if any of the following NPCs are dead or if any of the following quest situations occur (i.e., make a new character if this applies to you)
Dead NPCs (cannot be fixed, if any of the following are dead, roll a new character)
Reynant Alciente (Old Ebonheart, Marsh & Ellerian: Barristers)
Marsh-Demon-At-Her-Elbow (Old Ebonheart, Marsh & Ellerian: Barristers)
Gnaea Ellerian (Old Ebonheart, Marsh & Ellerian: Barristers)
Wry-Eye Moranie (Old Ebonheart, The Empress Katariah)
Merxia Vendicci (Old Ebonheart, Vendicci Manor or East Empire Company)
Lloras Nelvel (Ebon Tower, Palace: Treasure Chamber)
Aria Ioclania (Old Ebonheart, Ioclania Manor)
Serpen Ordo (Ebon Tower, Palace: Great Hall)
Aurelia Ordo (Ebon Tower, Palace: Great Hall)
Jodald (Old Ebonheart, The Salty Futtocks)
Carvera Tido (Old Ebonheart, The Salty Futtocks)
Hastophos Velifer (Old Ebonheart, Hastophos Velifer's House)
Nerasa Veran (Ebon Tower, Curia: Offices East)
Duke Phyrios Mattimus (Ebon Tower, Palace: High Chambers)
Oryn Traven (Verulas Pass, Tunnels)
Cellitara (Old Ebonheart, Guild of Mages)
Belisatha Mede (Ebon Tower, Curia: Central Offices)

Quests (if any of the following situations occur, the questline is blocked due to narrative complications)
However, you may be able to fix this by setting the relevant journal index below what's mentioned in console using setjournalindex
OE TG - Facing Eviction - You kill Nelara and anger Moranie (journal index = 300)
OE TG - Infiltrating the Gang - You side with Delagia and cause the TG to go into hiding (2c - journal index = 200)
OE TG - An Empress' Ransom- You didn't give the guards the Death Mask or were arrested (journal index >= 200)
Basement Declaration - Merxia expels you from the EEC for siding with Aetia (journal index 41)
A Deadly Treasure - Lloras calls a death warrant on you for stealing the lightning crystal (journal index 105) (this quest is mandatorily hooked into the questline for narrative reasons, but if you've already done the quest beforehand without keeping the crystal, you're fine)
Outlandish Heresy - Your character has started this Temple quest to illegalize necromancy in Old Ebonheart (journal index >= 10)
The Exiled Duke's Affair - Beru Vesuri escaped her cell or was killed, thereby causing you to anger the Duke (journal index >= 90)
