The Sloop William's History
Anne Bonny's and Mary Read's Pirate Ship.

The sloop William was a small but fast twelve-ton sloop. Her armament was light, consisting of four cannons. At the time of the final battle, she carried thirteen crewmen. Her captain, Calico Jack, was famous for two thing: The design of his Jolly Roger flag--a skull with crossed swords, and having two female crew members.

Anne Bonny was born at an unknown date. Prior to 22 August 1720, she moved to Nassau in the Bahamas, a sanctuary for pirates. It was there that she met Calico Jack Rackham. In August 1720, Rackam, with a crew including Bonny and another female pirate, Mary Read, stole a ship and became notorious pirates. Bonny was captured alongside Rackham and Read in October 1720. All pirates on board were sentenced to death, but Bonny and Read had their executions stayed because both claimed to be pregnant. Read died in jail around mid April 1721, but Bonny's fate is unknown.

Mary Read (died April 1721), was an English pirate about whom there is very little factual documentation. She and Anne Bonny were among the few female pirates during the "Golden Age of Piracy".

Read was likely born in England. General History say's she began dressing as a boy at a young age, at first at her mother's urging in order to receive inheritance money and then as a teenager in order to join the British military. She then married and upon her husband's death moved to the West Indies around 1715.
