Another mod that tries to rebalance morrowind rules to make the game more immersive and reasonable.
There are dozen of similar mods, this is what I found most fun in my games.
Here is the list of what this mod does:
- Walking speed is a bit faster.
- High encumbrance reduces speed less.
- Jumping feels more natural.
- Fatigue drain is less punishing for moving, but more for fighting. As other fighting actions Spellcasting drains Fatigue. Higher Encumbrance make Spellcasting more tiring, explaining why wizards usually have little/no armor.
- Barter disposition changes in a different way, merchants money resets slower.
- Projectile are faster.
- Speechcraft is rebalanced.
- Crime related fines are doubled.
- Greeting distance is greatly reduced. No more constant harassment while walking around
- Magical transportation is more expensive. Why walk when you can ride? Good question. Why ride when you can teleport? Now there is a reason.
- Skill increases are changed as in the Wakim Character esp.
- Each level up grants exactly three +1 to attributes. But you get a fortification to Luck and Personality equal to your level and half your level respectively.
- Blindself and Brittlewind are not autocalc anymore, so NPC won't use those. This a little-to-no effect in normal gameplay, but it solves some weird behaviors if you use the other suggested Wakim mods. I.e., NPC won't blind themselves and won't use the Hags specific Brittlewind spell.
To use with...
pianobadger's Class Mod,
mtrBalancedRaces,
mtrBalancedBirthsigns,
Wakim's Game Improvements,
use the following esp files:
- Balance - Items.esp,
- Balance - Magic Effects.esp,
- Balance - NPC Spellcasting.esp,
- Balance - Spells.esp,
- Gameplay - Dialogue.esp.
(this mod).
Installation
Download and install all suggested mods, activate all esp files in the launcher in the same order. Put this mod last.
Given the nature of the mods, they should be very high in the load order. Ideally just after the master files and patches (e.g., Patch for Purists, Unofficial Morrowind Official Plugins Patched, and Expansion Delay).
Notes
The most unusual change from similar mods is the add of fatigue drain from Spellcasting. The reason to do so are both thematic and mechanical. The thematic aspect is that for me it has always been strange that to swing a weapon is exhausting, but convince a part of world to spontaneously burst to pieces would be effortless. Secondly in Morrowind most mages wear little-to-no armors; in the vanilla rules this makes no sense, but if to be encumbered makes Spellcasting more tiring it could be a good reason to keep the load as light as possible. The mechanical aspect is that Spellcasting in MW is ridiculously powerful, so a little nerf can only help.
The Spellcasting fatigue draining formula is:
MagickaSpellCost * (fFatigueSpellBase + Encumbrance% * fFatigueSpellMult)
The values of fFatigueSpellBase and fFatigueSpellMult are both 1 in this mod. So to cast spells is always tiring, but if you are fully encumbered it is twice as tiring.
History
3 Add a fortification to Personality equal half the level, rounded down
2 Reduce the Attribute increase to +1 tops, add a fortification to Luck equal to the level
1 Reduce the greet distance, increase spellcasting fatigue drain
