spent like an hour trying to figure this out, but it does work! it doesn't matter where it's installed, just make sure to add the needed lines in the openmw config that's located in documents like others have said, and if it says resources can't be specified more than once, it's probably the resource path in the config located in the openmw install path, inside programs by default. you might also be able to directly place the resource folder from this mod into the openmw folder and overwrite; I'm not actually sure which solution worked for me. But it is for sure possible thank god
I was using 4.8 but just switched to that one for the water ripples. I was only able to make it work by replacing the vfs folder inside resources with what's found inside this. and then manually editing the values in water.frag from the 0.49.0 RC7 resource files. Tho I never got "Failed initializing shader: fullscreen_tri" the errors i got seem to come from the water.frag settings.
I never got the same error, so idk exactly what made it work; it's not exactly as accurate as the 4.8 version, and I'm just backwards engineering this, I'm not as knowledgeable as the mod author. But ignoring the install instructions provided, I replaced the vfs folder in "OpenMW 0.49.0\resources/vfs" with the same files from the pixel water imitation. specifically for the file water_nm.png, make sure not to replace the water.frag file inside "OpenMW 049.0\resources\shaders\compatibility", instead open water.frag with notepad or something like that and edit the tweakable values to match that of water.frag from the mod. You can do this variable by variable for testing compatibility or tweaking things yourself, but idk specifically what breaks. Hope this helps, sorry if I'm not good a explaining my prosses.
Hey ! So I followed CoranBread's advice and managed to modify water.frag to make it work with 0.49 RC7. I don't know if I wrote anything wrong in the file (I changed the values a bit though I don't know anything about shaders), but it works for me and I think it looks nice. Here's a link to download the file (remove the .txt from the filename, or just copy/paste it directly into your water.frag file after making a backup):
3rd step seems impossible to do. Trying to do exactly that, will lead to an error message when launching the game that the line Ressources cannot be specified twice. Could you elaborate on the steps? It seems a critical information is missing.
EDIT: Ah, yes, wrong config file. Not the original one, but the one in the user folder within "My Games". That's where you need to put it people.
It's ridiculous how convoluted some of this stuff is isnt it! That's why I was deliberately convoluted in my original installation instructions, to make fun of how difficult it can be for people to install mods like this. Hopefully it gets easier as OpenMW gets more developed but I wouldnt count on it, a lot of big brain people not realising why stuff would be hard for most of us :p
OpenMW creates two folders, one in your hd's root, program files folder, and one in your documents directory, "my games", then "openmw" folder. OP is talking about the latter.
I am confused about how the mod is installed...I don't understand where I'm supposed to make changes. I've downloaded the mod and used the openMW data directories Append function...is that wrong?

All I can get is: Failed initializing shader: fullscreen_tri
Hope this helps, sorry if I'm not good a explaining my prosses.
Water.frag
Also do not forget the water_nm.png from this mod

In the Options Menu, go to "Video" then "Water". Make sure Water Shader is set to ON.
I reccomend setting refraction to OFF, Texture Quality to LOW, and reflection shader detail to WORLD.
