The Law is Sacred
Version 1.1.3
By JaceyS
====Requirements====
- Morrowind
- Tribunal
- Bloodmoon
- MGE XE 0.10.1
- MWSE 2.1+
This mod requires a recent nightly build of MWSE. Please be sure to run the mwse-update.exe before playing this mod.
====Description====
For a society with the saying "The Law is Sacred" on their coins, the Empire does not seem all that concerned about due-process. With this mod, the guards (Imperial and House) will only kill you under specific circumstances. Everyday criminals that resist arrest get knocked out and dragged to jail, with an extra sentence for making things difficult. Lethal measures are saved for vampires, werewolves, and (configurably) very high profile criminals.
Includes an ESP to modify the guard dialog to better fit their new non-lethal approach, but it is optional.
v 1.1
Adds compatibility for Arcimaestro Antares "Go To Jail" mod, at Danae's request. If your esp is named something other than "Go To Jail 3.7.esp" or "Go To Jail 3.7 - NOM.esp", make sure to change the goToJailModTitle entry in the config file. My eventual goal is to replace the functionality of this mod, but, for now, they are compatible.
Between when I first released this mod, and now, police brutality has once again come to the fore of international attention. While I briefly have your attention, allow to me to say: Black Lives Matter, ACAB, and Abolish the Police!
v1.1.1
Fixed a coding error that was causing problems, and fixed compatibility with my other mod, Timely Escape. *face palm*
v1.1.2
Actually fixed the coding error that spurred the last update. Hopefully.
v1.1.3
Removed the use of an unwieldy MWSE function that is being changed by Null, replacing it with a leaner alternative. It is likely that previous versions will be incompatible with recent and upcoming MWSE builds.
===Configuration===
This mod uses the MCM functionality of MWSE to present several configuration options.
Show Message: Shows messages with information about incurring bounties added by this mod. Does not affect the confirmation message box, or the default jail message box.
Get Confirmation: After guards render you unconscious, asks if you want to be arrested, or die.
Animate Knockout: After the guards reduce them to zero health, the player character falls to the ground. You watch the player character stay on the ground for a few seconds while the guards keep beating on them.
Death Warrants: If set to true, guards will kill you instead of arresting you if your bounty is over the threshold defined by Death Warrant Value.
Resist Arrest Penalty: The amount of gold added to your bounty if you choose to resist arrest. Set to zero to disable this feature.
Guard Killing Penalty: The amount of gold added to your bounty if you kill a guard. Set to zero to disable this feature. If you have a mod that creates a justified situation for killing guards, then disable this feature.
Death Warrant Value: If Death Warrants is set to true, then this value determines the threshold at which guards kill rather than arrest. Does not affect the death warrant dialogue.
===Permisions===
You may use the scripting and writing in this mod for any purpose you wish, just give me credit. You have my permission to re-upload this mod in the event that I do not respond to contact on Discord at JaceyS#5136 for a period of 1 week or more. You can send me direct messages if you become a member of the Morrowind Modding Community server.
===Compatibility===
Fully compatible with Timely Escape -- guards sending you to prison take priority over the intervention, but if the guards are actually out to kill you, intervention will fire.
Other mods that trigger off of killing blows to the player might cause problems, depending on what they do.
Should be compatible with Next Generation Combat, or any other mod that uses MWSE Lua to alter damage.
If a mod has guards kill you with a script, then you may not be saved.
As this mod requires MWSE-Lua, it is sadly not compatible with OpenMW (as of the last time this file was updated).
If you discover mod incompatibilities, please report them to me on Nexus or at JaceyS#5136 on Discord.
===Issues===
Guards sometimes fail to stand down after arresting the player. Upon returning to the cell, they might run over and take a swipe at the player. If you have no bounty, then this attack will deal no damage, and the guards should calm down afterwards. Consider it a warning not to break the law again.
If you discover bugs, please report them on Nexus or at JaceyS#5136 on Discord.
===Installation & Removal===
Installation:
Unpack the archive file such that the top level contents are in your Morrowind\Data Files folder. Optionally, activate the ESP file to get the dialogue changes.
Removal:
Refer to the files included in the archive file to find what to delete. Also delete Morrowind\Data Files\MWSE\config\TheLawIsSacred.json.
===Upgrading Versions===
v1.0 to v1.1
Just drag and drop the updated files. The ESP has not changed, so no save fixing should be required.
===Future Plans===
I hope to build this mod into a total revamp of the justice system in Morrowind, with actual trials, executions, and playable jail sentences. But this week of the Modathon is almost over, and the current content is valuable.
===Thanks===
NullCascade, Greatness7, Merzasphor, Merlord, and OperatorJack, for the ongoing development of MWSE Lua.
Thanks to all the friendly folks over at the Morrowind Modding Community Discord.
