About this mod

Short guide on how to replay the old events or older patches if you missed it or you are starting a new save.

Permissions and credits
Requirements
  • Steam-copy of Moonstone Island (must be legally owned)
  • Steam must be online/open to download old game versions from their server
  • Save file or fresh save that doesn't already have the Holo-ween Hunt potions (this is for if you missed the event or you're starting a new save.)

Steps to downpatch
  • Open Steam in online mode.
  • Hit Win+R and paste steam://open/console
  • While in your Steam console, paste download_depot 1658150 1658151 5536550888188269474
  • The down patched version that runs the Holo-ween Hunt will be installed near where Steam games are installed by default on your own PC. For example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_1658150\depot_1658151\Moonstone Island.exe
  • Run the game by manually clicking the Moonstone Island.exe file from where Steam installed the down patched version.
  • Hop in-game and grab your potions, then feel free to go back to playing on the newest version which remains installed in it's usual location/in your library.

Save File Compatibility
  • As of the most recent patch (November 1st 2023,) it is completely safe to use a recent save file on this down patched version. But it may not be safe to do so in the future as developers add more content that can alter saves, the only way to make it 100% safe is by playing on a completely new save file while you are down patched, and then moving that save file to a future version after you grab the potions.

Number Breakdown
If you want a breakdown of what those numbers are:
  • 1658150 - their store number identifier, called the app ID
  • 1658151 - the public branch all players play on (as opposed to development branches or betas, things like that,) called the depot ID
  • 5536550888188269474 - the identifier for the last patch, called the manifestation ID

Other Manifestation IDs
  • 6290786037707588579 - Launch patch, great for taking advantage of unpatched bugs.
  • 4971874788268434374 - Second winter potion event, Holo potions arrive in your mailbox.

What is "down patching"?
"Down patching" is a term I have heard speedrunners use to describe how to legally downgrade a patched game. I'm not entirely sure if it's a real term or if it's widely used by speedrunners, but it's just meant to describe finding a method to play an older version of a game. Often to take advantage of previously patched glitches, bugs, exploits, time saves (for speedrunning,) etc. It can also potentially be used for something like replaying an old event that was removed from a game at a later point, although only if that event is tied to a patch like Holo-ween Hunt was.

Down patching is completely legal if you own the license to a game, and Valve allows you to do so natively through the Steam client.
