About this mod

Making the game more challenging and fun by changing monster statistics and more

Permissions and credits
"Day of the Serious Destroyer“ aims to provide Might and Magic 8 with one thing that it is desperately missing, at least for everyone who is not new to the game: A proper challenge.

This is achieved mostly by making enemies stronger. Monsters in Might and Magic 8 don’t have considerably better stats compared to Might and Magic 7, whilst in MM8 the player has one more party member, which leads to more damage dealt by the player. What makes an end-game monster in MM7, may only be good enough to be part of the mid-game in MM8. The dungeons also tend to be smaller and powerful items more easily accesible.
Highly powerful spells, easy promotion quests and strong, yet relatively early joining hirelings also contribute to the games relatively low difficulty.

This lead me to make changes to monsters, npc hirelings and spell values.

Some monsters are only slightly more powerful than they were before, whilst others aren’t even comparable to their vanilla counterpart. More difficult are especially some of those dungeons that contain a lot of treasure or important quest items (expect tougher promotion quests). The differences will get more noticable the further you progress through the game.

Other changes were made simply for creating a more diverse and interesting game (e.g. now there are pirate archers and sorcerers in Daggerwound, some monsters can summon others and friendly monsters like minotaurs now also exist as enemies). A few npcs were given different portraits, because some portraits were used multiple times, while others weren’t used at all.

Many NPC’s were made weaker, especially the ones you can hire in the early game. Cauri Blackthorne and Blazen Stormlance are less powerful than they used to be. The dragon Ithilgore doesn’t exist anymore and was replaced by a troll. A dragon that early in the game is simply too powerful.

All the other dragons require more effort to reach and won’t join the player that early in the game. It won’t be so easy to get there either, partly because invisiblitiy is now highly expensive.

This leads us to the next point: Spells are more expensive, especially light and dark magic ones. In Might and Magic 8 you usually end up having way more gold than you can spend. Highly useful or powerfull spells are now extra expensive (e.g. town portal, shrapmetal, light magic buff spells and others).

I initially made this mod back in 2014. This new version should be better thought through and generally more well-rounded.

Warning
: Not having a cleric may lead to serious forms of despair, broken keyboards and an irresistable urge for posting hateful
messages in the mods comment section.

The changes will appear only when starting a new game or after having maps respawn (changes to npcs only work on a new game).
