Use the mod editor and find the Commander Portrait. Then Save to Mod and reimport the file with whatever picture you want. Then package the mod and put it into your folder
Ok I've been trying to do that for merely 2 hours but I have no idea how the mod editor works. There are too many assets and folders and I get lost super easily. Are there any tutorials about how to edit mods ? Cause I'm totally lost. What file is the commander portrait ? How to reimport the file with another picture ? How to package the mod ? I hate being this person but I need help cause I don't want to have downloaded 100Gb for nothing you know...
Use the search function in the content browser in the bottom of the editor to find the commander portrait, right click save to mod, import your new png file to the portrait, then click manage mod and package the mod. Done.
Portrait editing is now a standard feature of Pilot Overhaul and makes doing so fairly trivial. https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/477
To replace Commander's icon, there need to find "Commander_Pilot" picture in Content Browser (it's in Content/UI/Textures/Pilots), then right-click on picture and tap "save to mod", then open picture (double-click on it) and tap "reimport" to choose new picture. Then as usual - "Manage mod" and "Package"
Hey, so im unable to get the commander to spawn with any quirks when i create new careers, Im unsure why its not working cuz its not being overridden by anything else in the load order, ive made sure of it. let me know if posting my load order would help cuz im at a loss.
Actually I would like to leave a note for others who might have this issue in the future, when i used the They pronouns optional files along with commanders quirks mod and pilot overhaul mod, it will not spawn a new commander with traits but when the they pronoun option is disabled, and i generate a new commander, they will get traits. idk what the They pronouns option adds that conflicts with commander quirks but they dont seem to work together.
This would probably be too silly, but I can't help but wish F-Mason could be given one of the portraits from the Waifu Portrait Project mod. I can use other mods to change the portrait, but during any moment where F-Mason speaks, it goes to the portrait from this mod (I'm currently using the Hakairo portrait version).
You'd probably need BanditCountry's permission to use any of his artworks (even if they're AI-generated).
hi darkdill, you can just download the editor and then make a mod where you "save to mod" the commander portrait and then import the image you want in the proper resolution and then package the mod and make sure it has higher priority.
if you want help or me to make a quick one for you, just send me a DM
Hey, I know theres other mods that make it so you can change mercs portraits and voice, would there ever be a way to make it so you could change masons voice and portrait at the start of the game so you arent locked into one gender or the other? would be a cool way to switch up how to play depending on what kind of character you want.
It would be really great if the arena announcers could be fixed as well (and to not call the career mode commander Mason) though it would probably be a lot of work.
I'm going through the script files now and I'm mostly just seeing it referencing "Jake Mason", is that correct? Or are there instances of 'he'? I just want to make sure I catch everything
Thank you so much, TenderTendrils! That made it easier to narrow it down to find the dialogue book I was searching for. Are there other announcers than Jackson Prime and Cotton Bateman that uses the male pronoun?
Big shout out for a great mod! I'm blown away at how far this has come. I read the description and know how a labor-of-love project like this can really wear you down when it's grinding away, line-by-line. Good on you for persisting!
I'm giving this a big endorsement!
I did have one startup problem when I switched from MW5 Load Order Manager to Vortex. It's an easy fix, so I'm going to post it in case someone else runs into it.
Vortex users may have several mod conflicts if you use MW5 Portrait Overhaul and Commander Quirks. Going into the manual mod folder, opening the mod.json file for both mods, then changing the "default load order" from "0" worked for me:
Question? Does it also annoy you when the character is stuck as a woman? Like with Bayonetta, Aloy, and Samus? Or are you just one of those people that can't stand it when a character is male while you are female like my sister? I mean, It's not like there are customization options for your character to begin with. So having a swap-able gender doesn't seem to be that important to me. Could you explain to me why this mod is important to you?
You're reading way too far into this. Some people, myself included, just don't like it when we're forced to play a certain gender.
Personally, I have no problem playing as a male, but I generally prefer playing as a female. Likewise, some people prefer playing as a male, but have no issue with playing as a female.
If the character has history or it's a character that an entire series is based on it's fine, but if that's not the case, games should always give you a choice.
The way Mass Effect did it was great, and generally, I think every game is better if they give you the option.
A game franchise built around a story arc that is gender role specific is fine. Master Chief being a dude, Bayonetta/Lara Croft etc.. being female only, no issues.
When a game is less gender specific driven storyarc being forced into any single gender choice is rather annoying. That being said given the times of gender equal representation. I'm surprised most game titles that are not designed with a gender specific orientation storyarc don't have the optional choice for their gaming audience. Mechwarrior at it's heart is a tabletop TBS/RPG with a character pilot design so gender option for players should have been a thought of part.
I suppose it simply boils down to costs on the development table. Probably didn't want to pay for multiple voice actors to narrate lines, an less work for their team to have to work the code for multi-gender lines in.
hi first off I like to say thank you for giving us an option with this mod..... as far as voice acting goes the company could have shilled out a few more dollars and hired a good voice actor that can voice male and female voice and you would never know the true gender of the actor who voiced it there are plenty of them out there for the roll of the main character so it wouldn't be an issue to what gender roll you picked for your main character. and mechwarrior or battletech as it other name goes was not so much about the pilot as it is the mech themselves. sure it would have been nice from day one to have the option for either gender as your pilot and was one of the ideas that should not have been scrapped due to omg where do we find a girl to voice the part I mean come on it the same lines just done male or female voiced and if you got one good to great voice actor to read the lines two time once as male and once as female do you really thing it adds that much more work for the devs ? I say no not really considering they already had voice acting for your female and male npc team mates what one more line that tell the game check if main character is male or female if female is true run xyz sound track for given event. not really that hard.and when it comes to mechwarrior as a whole mech mercs in that world can be either male or female. I just personally say I like games more that gives me a choice to play what ever I want to play as it has nothing to do with my own gender. I can tell you from historicly speaking in the past I prefered femals character because the dev put more time into makeing them move more naturally then they did with male character and this is a fact not an opinion there was many games in the past that the developer of a same game had made the females in the game movement natural and fluid and the males looking like a puppet with a pole placed up the characters butt and the legs moved very wierd. sorry i digressed. I like to agan thank the modder for giving us this option as far as the voice acting work goes I might know someone that can help if interested let me know and I'll see about getting you two connected.
Alright, everyone. now that I've been thoroughly clowned on and ridiculed because i couldn't reply because I got banned for saying this and that, I have no problem with playing as a woman in any game, to make that clear. The point I was trying to make was that Mason is MASON, an established character with a name and a predetermined backstory, not us, even if he has like zero personality, which is different from Battletech's story where you make yourself or someone else. I also have no problem with the mod's existence, and never did, I just found the idea that they "lock in" the player character like that an odd choice of words for someone who isn't a self insert to begin with in my eyes because I view Mason as a separate character from myself, like Chief or Bayonetta, or Dante. I may relate to this character and connect with them, but I am not them. The majority of the time where I play a player customized character I play as a woman. Xenoverse 2 and Code Vein, and Battletech with Luna Crescent, as a few examples. I don't like playing as my own self insert character, and I hope this clears some things up, and yall can finally have me stop yapping here. I apologize for not being clearer.
The least they could've done was swapped the VAs of Spears and Mason. Cuz OMG was Mason's VA was awful. This AI does a better job than he did. Yet they had the same VA who played Adam Jensen in Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided who does an amazing job in those games and even an amazing job in MW5. Like you're already paying for him... Make the actually talented one who's proven they can voice someone on a mission for revenge the character who's out for revenge.
I do agree that a game should let a person choose the gender, but this can we keep it real when this site bans modders for changing a character's gender. I mean look at the baldur gate 3 situation. But its ok if we change a male to female but the other way gets you banned????? Im for all mods that change gender or race or etc... if its not immersion breaking to the lore.
DoomCat33 Mason is a newly created character for the game, not an established character in the lore. The gender of Mason means nothing to the character. They could have been either gender and it wouldn't make a difference, and they barely have a personality so it's more of a blank slate character for the player.
Mason is not an established character the way Lara Croft or Master Chief or Nathan Drake or Bayonetta are. Mason has no history in the lore or story before MW5. Also, their personal back story has little bearing on the character, and even in that back story, the character being male really isn't a key point to the character at any point.
fragsnip If all they did was change the genders of those characters it would have probably been fine. They changed the genders with a specific homophobic agenda. They wanted to change the genders of those characters in the game because they didn't want same sex relationships in the game and they were pretty overt about that fact. That's why those modders got banned, not because they wanted some female characters to be male.

It took a bit of work, but I did manage to figure out how to create a commander portrait mod that overrides the commander portrait in this mod. :)
overridden by anything else in the load order, ive made sure of it. let
me know if posting my load order would help cuz im at a loss.
EDIT: OOPS wrong mod page. my apologises
Maybe it can be fixed in the future?
but anyways, love this mod alot! Thanks

By the way, I think you forgot about the Hakairo one; it's still packaged as an image and voicepack, not an image alone.

LKADFHLKDFH THIS IS THE FUNNIEST, WEIRDEST OPINION TO HAVE??? are gamer dudes actually...... anti- being a woman in video games now??? HAHAHAHA
LoL, they're reading waaaay to far into it.
