Having this fix attached to the mechs themselves seems like a really odd choice... Like, if I remove the double heat sinks that come with certain mechs & put them on a mech that usually comes with singles, & replace the original mech's with singles... would it still work as if both mechs had their original heatsinks? o_O
Why make it mech-connected? Why not have it just be math attached to the heat sinks themselves? Singles do 1x, Doubles do 2x?
It'd really help make this more compatible too, since it can create a lot more conflict to mess with mechs vs equipment, one would think?
Lore-wise, it should be connected to the engine. If you follow table top construction rules you get 10 free crit & weight free heat sinks, depending on the size of the engine. There's the big post earlier if you wanted the exact rules.
So technically there are 10 "hidden" heat sinks on the almost all of the 'mechs built-in before you add any. The only way to make those "hidden" heat sinks "double" is to change the base cooling rate.
All hero mechs seem to have their upkeep cost set to 10,000 with this mod enabled. Wonder if there is any chance for an update, I really like this mod.
Small oversight, but the Dragon hero mech Sidewinder (from the HotIS DLC) has engine DHS with this mod, but it shouldn't. It comes with singles, and isn't marked as DHS with attribute viewer.
Amen! I'd like EVERY SINGLE PERSON who reads this post to request this change be implemented, as nicely as possible, in #mw5-feedback in the discord!!!
Have not tried this mod so far, because I alredy use the "seriousheatsinkfix", which pretty much nailed it as far as lore goes.
Just wanted to comment because some of the statements in your description are not fully correct.
You stated that every mech's engine already contains 10 heatsinks which is not correct. The engines do have a rating, which divided by the mechs weight gives it's final crusing speed (Cruising Speed = engine rating / mech's tonnage x 10.8 kph ("Top Speed" is simply "Cruising Speed" x 1.5)).
The Engine houses 1 Heat Sink per full 25 points of rating, up to a maximum of 10 Heat Sinks at a 250 point rating. For every 25 points above the 250 value, a potential extra heat sink could be added (which never is by default). This gives the extra "Engine Heat Sink slots" in the MechLab.
So Example: The Marauder, a 75 ton mech, has a cruising Speed of 43.2 kph (64.8 kph Top Speed). To archive this, it has an engine build in, with a 300 point rating. So having 50 extra points of engine rating above 250, gives it 2 extra slots for assigning extra Engine Heat Sinks. So if the engine contains single heat sinks, like the MAD-3R version does, the base heat rating would be 1. If the engine already includes Double Heat Sinks, like the MAD-5D version does, the base heat rating should be 2.
But that's not so easy for most lighter Mechs: Lets take the Blackjack for example a 45 to mech, stating the same speed values as the Marauder. But being lighter by 30 tons, it only houses an engine with an 180 rating. So this buddy does not only get no extra slots for extra Engine Heat Sinks, it also only houses 7 Heat Sinks inside the engine (180 / 25 = 7.2, which is always roundes down as there are no "partial" Heat Sinks). So if the engine contains single heat sinks, like the BJ-1 version does, the base heat rating would just be 0.7. If the engine already includes Double Heat Sinks, like the BJ-3 version does, the base heat rating should be 1.4.
So to make this Mod not just a simple buff for everything, you would need to alter all Mechs according to their engine layout and tackling the right versions which already include Double Heat Sinks and which do not. And to make it even more complicated, the Double Heat Sinks do not only affect the heat dissipation (cooling speed), they also affect the maximum heat capacity (the amount of heat the mech can build up before going redline).
Just a suggestion for a differnt path, because if you would do the above stuff, you'd just do the same thing as the "seriousheatsinkfix" already does: An even better option would be, to make this an option to add in the MechLab. Giving the player the option to kinda "upgrade" the engine with a newer version by adding a special equipment slot (along with the according item) to upgrade the engine to Double Heat Sinks (technically doubling the engine's base cooling value). Make it market available after 3035 at roughly 500k CBills and you'd have a really great addon.
Cheers, Nuit
P.S.: Yes, I know this was already available in Navida1's big awesome overhaul mod "MW5: Mercs Reloaded", which we all greatly miss. But as long as there is no sign of Navida1 redoing the mod for the current Version of MW5 anytime soon, let someone else give it a shot ;-)
Nuit, I was glossing over some of these details in the description. In the mod, mechs with engine rating below 250 receive a prorated buff based on how many heat sinks they actually contain in MW5.
For me the key difference between this mod and SeriousHeatSinkFix (which I reference in the mod description) is that this mod doesn't alter the heat cap. IMO boosting both is a bit OP, so this mod reflects the particular balance I was looking for.
