I want to 1st say the portraits look wonderful and would be quite an upgrade. But I ran into a big disconnect that made me remove it. The portraits fall out of line with the voices. I keep getting things like a small Asian voice coming for a large black person. or some other oddity. Not sure how the base game keeps them in line but its an issue here.
Yea, unfortunately the game reuses some of the portraits for completely different characters, but the originals were so low quality and indistinct that they could pass for that. Once you make them high resolution realistic renders they only work for the "original" character they were created for and the additional ones they reused the portrait for don't fit. I did find a few and use generic helmeted ones for them, but there are still several more I couldn't track down.
I realise there is effort involved so it may simply be that you haven't yet had time but I wondered if you were also planning to update the portraits with the back grounds so they are at the same level as the no back ground ones?
Hi I did want to, but I've lost a significant number of the original mod assets for that version (was running low on storage space and was overly aggressive in clearing out unused files before I gave in and bought an additional 2tb SSD). To fix it would require regenerating all the named character portraits again and I just don't have time to do that at the moment.
I really like the new alternative images, but I've encountered a bug with the DLC, so I attached it. I will likely disable it until the end of the Campaign, as while I know what the briefings say, I like to re-read them before each mission. I'm guessing the source image is too wide compared to the narrower original artwork. Thanks for all you do. I can submit it as a bug if you prefer that over a comment. Here is an image of the briefing screen:
Thank you, yes I was caught off guard because the game normally takes whatever you put into it and resizes it to a set resolution, but it doesn't do that for the full length portraits, which results in what you see there. I'll see if I can get some time over the next few days to resize them.
I'll be uploading a fixed version shortly. Unfortunately I can only fix the no backgrounds version as I've lost the original files for the backgrounds version and would have to completely rebuild the whole thing from scratch.
The update may not be perfect, as it looks like the original dimensions were 512x1024. The original replacers were created at 1024x1024 I have had to cut them to size in line with the image and so now the full size replacer images vary from 405x1024 to 765x1025. Should still be enough of a reduction to get the full briefing back on screen for most resolutions though.
*Spoke too soon, getting a load of weird errors when trying to republish the mod, may take a while to work out what it is as never seen these before.
Hmm, when you say Kurita missions have no portrait, do you mean the dragon's gambit missions? I did miss one of the DLC packs off and i think that was it.
I think its a generated mission. Its called Break the standoff.
That being said. When I wrote the post earlier there have been two Kurita missions, both w/o the portrait. After I left the system and returned one of the kurita missions shows your portrait, while the other still has this kind of placeholder. I would upload an screenshot, but I dont know how to do in this forum.
The game can do some funny stuff with portraits on loading into games where previous portraits were in place. I did have to replace three standard kurita portraits in v4.0 as something had gone awry with them since v3.0 was published and the editor wouldn't package the mod until I replaced them. It's possible that those portraits were involved in that mission. When you encounter missions on the galaxy map for the first time, it generates missions from a set of criteria. Maps, pilots, portraits etc. seem to get baked into it at that point. So it may just be a consequence of upgrading that those aren't displaying correctly. I have been through to check and cant see any missing from the kurita portrait folders.
Yes, and le men, as these portraits replace all characters, which includes both men and women.
The original portraits included a mix of pilots with and without helmets, there is a mix of pilots with and without helmets in this one too, just a lot more without. Mainly because, in my opinion, it would be pointless to do a bunch of character portraits where all you see are helmets. Especially as, going by the original portraits, they are mostly bulky and goofy looking things.
Really enjoying all your portrait mods but wanted to report a gap that seems to exist. I've noticed that all the Dragon's Gambit high level NPC portraits like Rhonda Snord etc are still the original drawn portraits. No idea whether it's possible or if you've spare time to look at it but it would be great to see your portraits instead.
Thank you, yes hadn't realised it myself until i played through it a week or so ago. I;ll need to go and track where they are stored down and setup some new ones for it, hopefully within the next week.
In the missions screen from first DLC campain (Kestrel Lancers) the screen doesn't fit to the resolution (2560x1440). It seem to be made for 1920x1080. Is there a possibility to add wide screen support? But nevertheless a very nice mod with well choosen pictures. I enjoy it very much.
There is, its caused by an inconsistency in how the game manages the textures for most portraits and the portrait being used for those briefings. For all the normal portraits the game automatically resizes them to the correct size (they go in at 1024x1024 but get resized to something like 128x128). I had assumed that the automatic resizing would be consistent but it doesnt resize the images at all for those briefings, so the 1024x1024 is simply too big. I noticed recently when playing through the campaigns myself. As half the continue button was off the screen, as were a portion of the briefing itself. Although I could continue and i play on a 16:9 ratio screen. I thought it may not be possible for someone on a 4:3 to continue, but i didn't think anyone would be playing this game on that sort of setup. Ultrawide I thought would be less impacted, are you able to press the continue button?
In the MW5Mercs directory where the game is installed there will be another directory called MW5Mercs, within that there should be a directory called "Mods" just unzip it in to that directory (so that the NPC_Pilot_Update folder is sat in that Mods folder). When you load the game you can then go to the mods menu and tell the game to activate it. I would strongly recommend that if you dont already, you use a mod organiser though. Personally I use MW5 Mod Organizer at MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com) .
Some of the image replacements are a bit off. The air support pilot is wearing a standard business suit most of the time and I just had a Black Inferno male commander with a female portrait.
Thanks for reporting it. There are a couple of the portraits where, from within the editor, the original portraits were so unclear that i couldn't tell if they were male or female but they looked more feminine than male, so it looks like I guessed wrong. Unfortunately the editor isnt always particularly clear which texture relates to who either.
The game reuses some of the portraits for other characters and where the original portrait is labelled as something like "liao liaison" it ends up being used as the liao liason in one mission and then something completely different in another. That original portrait was suitably bland/generic that it didnt really matter (a grey outfit with sunglasses for example and that outfit could be a pilot uniform or a suit).
I am planning on doing another pass over this as there are also issues with the full length portraits for some of the briefings in the DLC campaigns. The game force resizes every portrait you put into it, except these which it leaves and displays in their original dimensions. Which means they are too big (too wide in fact, the height is ok) and push the briefings to the right. That clips some of them and could potentially prevent the continue button from being visible.. it was ok mine at 2560 x 1440 and any similar or wider ratio would also be ok, but if anyone played it on a 4:3 ratio then its likely to prevent them continuing. So i need to redo those ones to be 1024x512 originals instead of 1024x1024.
Just another example - in the "X marks the spot" campaign missions (assisting pirates at the behest of Spears), Yaros Rega's new portrait is of an older Asian woman. Edit: I like this mod, just pointing out the...quirks.
