   when importing my shep from previous mass effect, do i need to accept imported face for the mod? or do I need to use the default or custom shep?

      Well if you wanna carry your Shepard then you need to choose imported face. Also hairs don't work with default Shepard.  If you have a mod that let's you see the closet before the game like Prologue Outfit Chooser or Project Variety, and AMM for the appearance menu to be active then you can change the hairstyle from there afterwards as well.
