Mass Effect 3

This brief guide will explain how the new mechanics work, how the points are allocated, and what is necessary to get the best ending.

I do  N O T  recommend first time players to read this guide, as it not only spoils the entire mod, but also ruins the experience of playing with the system for the first time, discovering what does and doesn't work, and reloading a save to fix your mistakes. In essence, it takes the fun away.

You have been warned.

If you're a first time player, and you read this guide before playing, please do not leave criticism on how the mod is too easy. It was designed for new players in mind, and as with most dialogue-based boss fights -- whether it's here, or in Deus Ex, or Detroit: Become Human -- once you know the correct answers, it's no longer a challenge.

That being said, the guide is below:

The natural flow of the conversation, as well as the dialogue options, interrupts and new actions will result in The Illusive Man either losing or gaining more control over you, which is shown via the moving bar.

The endings are divided into HighMedium or Low. This is based on how much Control he has left after you select the very last Paragon/Renegade option, which comes up after TIM says:

"You...you'd undo everything I've accomplished. I won't let that happen."

Low Control (0-50 points): Proceeds as vanilla. The Illusive Man either shoots himself, or tries to shoot you.

Medium Control (50-60 points): You're unable to persuade The Illusive Man. He fatally shoots Anderson, and you're offered a Renegade
interrupt in order to save yourself.

High Control (60+ points): You're unable to stop The Illusive Man in any capacity. He kills both you and Anderson, prompting a game over screen.
Time to reload and try again.

The 2nd UI element (underneath the bar) lets you know at which level you are.

At 4 points throughout the entire confrontation, Illusive Man's Control levels will go up:

First appearance (+10 points)
Forces Shepard to raise their gun (+20 points)
Forces Shepard to shoot Anderson (+30 points)
Final Line ( "You'd undo everything..." ) (+10 points)

In the end, this amounts to 70 points, which by default results in a High Control ending.

That being said, here are all of the new options and their results:

Picking the basicright side Paragon / Renegade options: +5 Control

Consistently picking either Persuade or Intimidate: -15 points (after the final dialogue wheel)
Not being consistent in either Persuade or Intimidate: +5 points (after the final dialogue wheel)

Paragon Interrupt: - 5 points
Renegade Interrupt: + 10 points

Round One (2nd dialogue wheel)
[Try to Move] -5 Control points
[Resist Control] +10 Control points
[Attempt to Shoot] +10 Control points

Round Two (3rd dialogue wheel)
[Resist Control] -5 Control or -10 Control if previously selected in Round One
[Attempt to Shoot] -5 Control or -10 Control if previously selected in Round One

In each Round, you can select either [Resist Control] / [Attempt to Shoot] only once. In Round One, however, you can select [Try to Move] as well, but the player is discouraged from doing so as Anderson says that TIM is too strong.

The key to winning is consistency and not agitating The Illusive Man. Options where the Illusive Man becomes unconvinced of your arguments, or you attempt to break free during times when he's sure of himself, his goals, and his lack of indoctrination -- will result in him exerting more Control over you.

The system was designed and balanced to reward persistent players, but also those who think about the timing of their decisions. However, it also offers quite a bit of flexibility and the option of repairing your progress if you've made a few bad decisions... but also doing the complete opposite.

Selecting all available options and interrupts will not result in the best ending. Doing nothing also won't have a good result.

Therefore, in order to get the best ending, here is one of the possible paths:

·        Consistent in either Persuade or Intimidate
·        Round One: Select [Try to Move]
·        Round Two: Select either [Resist Control] or [Attempt to Shoot]
·        Select the Paragon interrupt
·        Do not select the Renegade interrupt
