A NOTE ON LEGENDARY EDITION: As a "Consistency Project," this mod will most likely not be ported to the LE. FemShep's actual head mesh is now in all three games in the Legendary Edition. The complexion textures used in this mod are not mine, but were used with the permission of the authors who created them, and I look forward to seeing new complexion options and other tweaks to FemShep once such modding is possible.
Hi! Awesome mod, I really like having a consistent FemShep, especially for one with an underpowered machine that can't afford the bells and whistles of the new Legendary Edition.
I just have a problem... The head doesn't show. I'm still stuck with vanilla FemShep, even in game! I even had all consistent textures..
If you're familiar with editing/modding files, you can go into the mod and change it manually, but at the moment there's not a way to do it within the game itself.
I am a bit familiar with modding files, but not for ME1. Could you give me some pointers? I assume I would need to unpack the mod files. Which files exactly? What software to unpack would you recommend? After unpacking would I need to do anything else to gain access to the eye texture image file?
If you're familiar with modding files, it's actually pretty easy. Here's the info I gave an earlier poster asking the same question (it's buried way back in the comments, so no need for you to go searching yourself):
if you were modding the eye color yourself manually in ME3, you can do it in a similar manner in ME1. You're going to just want to open the BIOG_PLR_Female_Appr_L file, look for "HMF_EYE_PROSheppard_MAT_1a" and change the iris color there under Vector Parameter Values.
Sounds like you may need a little bit more info than that, but I'll see if I can walk you through it. First, you don't need to unpack anything -- just install the version of the mod you want with ME3Tweaks Mod Manager (i.e., Ellise textures vs. vanilla, hoodie or not). That will install the DLC folder DLC_MOD_FEM_APPR.
You'll want to use the Package Editor in ME3Tweaks (https://github.com/ME3Tweaks) to open up the file BIOG_PLR_Female_Appr_L (the one in the DLC folder the mod installed) and do your edits in there.

Most of what you're saying sounds correct, except on my version, it's 44, not 43, for the material (just want to confirm yours is saying 43? you're still on the eye mat, so it shouldn't matter, I'm just wondering if there's a discrepancy between your file and my current version). Second, are you actually modifying the hex? You shouldn't need to, so no need to Save Hex Changes.
Here's what mine looks like changing her eye color to red (I'm using Tree View instead of Export, so it looks slightly different)
After you saved the file, did you open it back up to confirm the changes to the eye color were still there?
Thanks for the directions! I think I managed to do everything right, except the eye color is not changing in the game.
With ME3Explorer's Package Editor I opened the BIOG_PLR_Female_Appr_L.upk file in Mass Effect\DLC\DLC_MOD_FEM_APPR\CookedPC\Packages\GameObjects\Characters\Appearances\Player\
Then, on the Exports tab, I selected the 43:PROSheppard.HMF_EYE_PROSheppard_MAT_1a, then clicked on Interpreter/Hex Editor, then expanded the VectorParameterValue, then expanded the "EYE_Iris_Colour_Vector", then expanded "LinearColor" and got access to the RGBA values. I changed only the RGB values to 1,0 / 0,0 / 0,0 (to make it red, so the change would be obvious). After setting those values I then clicked on Save Hex Changes, then I save the file (Ctrl+S).
I tried it after a completely fresh install of the game, even after deleting the documents\bioware\mass effect\ folder entirely. The eyes still show as green in the game. Is there anything else I could be editing?

I noticed I was using an older version of the ME3Explorer, and that was the reason mine was showing 43 instead of 44, like yours. So I started using the one from ME3Tweaks, and it's showing 44, like yours, now. Though that didn't change my issue at all. Maybe my issue has something to do with me using the Hoodie version, instead of the default one?
I was finally able to change the eye color, but I had to edit the "37 HMF_EYE_PROAverage_MAT_1a" instead of the "44 HMF_EYE_PROSheppard_MAT_1a". It doesn't show the change on the character creator but it does during gameplay and on cutscenes, which is where it matters. Do you think that by changing that file instead I could run into any issues?
After you saved the file, did you open it back up to confirm the changes to the eye color were still there?
I did. Even opened other files in between and closed and opened the software again. The file size also changed (it got smaller), so no doubt about the changes being saved.
Thank you very much for the support! This mod makes my ME experience so much better! If I come across any issues, by changing the eye color the way I did, I'll let you know.
Ohh, I forgot to ask if you were checking for your changes in Character Creator! Changing the eye color in the file we were using won't show in CC at all because CC uses a different file (EntryMenu.SFM). I'm so sorry, that didn't even occur to me. Did you try testing changing the Shepard eye material and viewing it in game/outside of CC? Did it still not change then?
I'd thinking changing that eye Average material *might* mess up other characters... but you might also be able to get away with it. Anyway, I'm glad you got it working for you now!
I did test it both in the character creator and in-game, the results I was describing were in-game, yes. I'm about halfway through the game and so far I haven't noticed any side effect of the change. So I'm quite happy! I'll post it here if I do end up finding something weird.

EDIT: Just to mention, but changing the HMF_EYE_PROAverage_MAT_1a file does not change the character creator.
Thanks a lot for all the information. I was massively confused for a while there as I was looking in the wrong file the whole time. Didn't realize mods installed to DLC and not the data folders lol. It all made sense once I opened the *mods* file.
Hey, I changed the eye colour just fine thanks to the useful info here but I can't figure out how to change hair colour. Feel like I've changed every damn RGB vector in that file by now and no change lol.
I wonder if this relates to the same method discrepancy covered in this thread. I too were not successful editing (Shepard_MAT_1a) only worked by editing (Average_MAT_1a)
The mysterious part is that I've changed every HED and hair related RGB setting and nothing has changed.
She looks cute as hell. Can't wait to try it out. Thank you.
Damn, I don't suppose there is a way to change the iris colour? Can only seem to change this on the vanilla shepard model.
It's official she looks like a more beautiful and less gaunt version of Caitlyn from fo4. She's gorgeous. Thanks a lot of making and sharing this awesome work. I'm happy but also sad I can't marry her lol.
If you find time can you add LE face texture and made replacer for ME3? LE face texture Its a bit different than OG ME3 face texture it have more natural eyebrows, less visible freckles and no lipstick.
Alright, I reinstalled the mod and it worked but everything else around the character lacks textures or lighting except for Femshep, the problem is multiplied if I play a MaleShep.

I just have a problem... The head doesn't show. I'm still stuck with vanilla FemShep, even in game! I even had all consistent textures..
edit: never mind, it does work it just doesn't show the changes during character creation, thank you for this amazing mod
