As a WWD fan, this is really exciting. However, I will say the Postosuchus needs some work (conidering it is a highlight from the episode) before I download this particular mod. Regardless, the plateosaurus and ceolophysis look phenominal, and I really hope that more episodes are released. Maybe not brand new mods, but just new species or a compilation of the old mods we've seen (big Al, most notably)
Thank you for your feedback :) What did you suggest for the Postosuchus ? :) Is it the model or the skin ? Both ? What can I try to do to improve it ? :) I'm currently working, indeed, on the the next pack and I'm planning many more after !
Howdy! Thanks for getting back :D I think the model is the main thing fo me at this point. I think it does need an overhaul to make it more accurate. I'm not a 3D modeller, so I don't have the proper experience to say how to improve it. When I look at it, it just comes down to the shape of the model and the detail of the texture. :)
So, first, the teeth ? What do you suggest ? Are they too small ? Too long ? Too thin ?
Even if you are not a 3D modeller, try to make words on your suggestions, it can help me to better understand what can I do and of course if I agree with your suggestion :) My main issue when I was working on the model was the head and the detail of the texture was also a pain to work on ^^
Hey there! Postosuchus Image I'm using this image here as a reference for my description.
The Skull The postosuchus from the show has a pronounced dorsal ridge running from the tip of the snout to the back of the head, down the side of the neck and along the shoulders and back, all the way to the end of the tail. The superorbital ridge (the ridge running over the top of the head, like where an Allosaurus has it's pronounced crests) is raised and pronounced when compaired to the animal's narrow skull (looking face on) The Neck is stocky and rounded, and the head is also slightly rectangular. The eyebrow ridge that you have pronounced technically isn't accurate, and is barely visible to this extent. The jaw opens up all the way to the back of the skull. The teeth are also more uneven rather than needle-like They are different shapes and sizes like a crocodile (I'll be referencing the similarities between Postosuchus and crocodile quite a bit, considering WWD has taken direct inspiration from the animal when it comes to the skin and armor structure). The orbitals and antiorbitals (the holes in the snout and the for the eyeball) are visible. Not shrinkwrapped to create a hole, but flesh almost sags outside of the holes The eye is smaller, closer to the superorbital, squinted. It's also important to mention the very unique nostril that the Postosuchus has.
The Body The posture on yours is incorrect in two areas: the neck and the hips For the proper hip posture, the hips are placed quite high, and the head is much lower In the neck, the head is never raised higher than the neck itself. The head rides straight, dipping below the crest of the neck vertebrae. Also, the throat/neck skin/delap starts mid bottom jaw, droops down and goes under to the shoulders, rather than starting right at the back of the jaw. The body itself is quite slimmed down, especially the abdomin. The legs are also quite long, and much thinner than the model provided in the mod. Also, I can't see from the picture provided, but I think there are too few digits on the feet. There should be at least five. The shoulder placement for the forelimbs is correct, but again, yours is very stocky in comparison to the slim forearms and rounded shoulder muscle from the original Postosuchus. The tail posure and placement is correct. It still is a bit kinked up, needs some lengthening and also some dorsal ridges at the end, similar to a nile crocodile, but a little flatter and wider. While we are talking about dorsal ridges, the ridges on the back need to be adressed. The spines on the back and hips are much to long and sausage shaped. They should instead be subtler and look more like flattened out and rounded off shark fins. There are a few specifically placed bumps that run along the side of the Postosuchus, and they align with the dorsal ridge, and the lateral line, getting smaller near the tail.
The Texture One of the main issues here apart from the model is the texture which, understandabley, will take time and patience to replicate the one from the show. But let's break down the three main things here: the scales/armor, the skin/underbelly, and finally the coloration and pigments
The Scales/Armor The scales or scutes on the WWD Postosuchus show up as segmented ridges running like wave-like armor across the spine and side, as well as the tail and neck. They are not like an ankylosaurus or euplocephalus, which seem to have very specific, grid-like patterns on the armor. The Postosuchus has more Crocodillian-like armor, with each armor segment consisting of one long peice starting from the vertebrae and cutting down almost to the belly. The armor on the legs has the same look, but the segments overlap rather than protrude, and there are also more of them.
The Skin/Underbelly The Postosuchus has a very wrinkled, folded skin that rolls under and over in waves between the legs, arms, under the neck and below the jaw and throat. It's heavy, leathery, and tough. Grabbing a hunk of it in your hand is like grabbing a stiff, rough tarp full of muscle.
The Coloration The Postosuchus has an iconic color pattern. It's harsh golden-beige and reddish brown with dark brown stripes and spots are an earthy and nasty look for a beast with such a bad reputation for killing. The ruddy and basic colors become vitalized with the smearing of filth over the scales and into the cracks of the armor and skin. The mouth is easily the nastiest place on the animal, with torn up and filthy gums that sprout new teeth nearly every week. The feet collect the red earth and it sticks way up in the crevaces of the scales and rolles of the flesh and armor. Safe to say, she's not very clean. ______ I know I just wrote an essay on one mod. Don't feel overwhelmed by all the details and criticisms. I promise you that this is not to bring you down with all the stuff you got wrong. It would not be fair if I did that. In fact, you did a lot of stuff right for the first iteration. I just wrote this as a heavy description of the animal itself to give you all the nitty gritty details of the Walking With Dinosaurs Postosuchus, spilling the secrets if you will. If you really need some great inspiration, go look at the crocodiles I was talking about before. BBC used them for the postosuchus design, so if you need some help getting the textures and skin to look JUST right, reference real life, just as they did.
Just keep up the good work ??I know you'll pull it off!
if I may suggest something, the placerias has a bit of a small head compared to both the real animal, and the wwd placerias. if you can, could you try to make the head bigger? if not, it's alright.
is the plateosaurus compatible with echogreen's plateosaurus? im trying to figure out what is crashing my game as soon as i try to load up a save or even a new one. Edit: nvm it is sorry bout that lol
