About this mod

Vastly expands on the weather system in JWE.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
A mod that expands on and fixes the JWE weather system by introducing:
  • new passive weathers (in 14 total variants to keep things dynamic)
  • 6 new storm types, all unique in the types of challenge they present.

You now have much more time to build and play between your storms, and most storms aren't especially dangerous. But the most severe storms have been seriously beefed up so that you have to pay attention when they come around. Tornadoes and Hurricanes ain't messing around no more.
Just the way it should be.

Quick Changelist
Challenge (New weathers):
  • Cloudy/Misty
  • Windy (Sunny)
  • Windy (Cloudy)
  • Light Rain (Sunny)
  • Light Rain (Cloudy)
  • Downpour (Sunny)
  • Downpour (Cloudy)
  • Gales
  • Storm
  • Hurricane
  • Typhoon
  • Tornado
  • Extreme

Sandbox:
  • Light Rain extended to around 8-10 minutes.

Campaign:
  • None. Campaign modes all have different points at which storms are meant to come in, so I will need to replay that before I can mess with it - I don't have the time to do this right now.

Video Demo of Added Weathers

Passive Weather
Passive weathers are non-damaging weather types that exist just for ambience. They normally occur between every 10 minutes to 30 minutes, but longer weathers can have a longer cooldown. All passive weathers can stick around for either short or long durations, and come in both Cloudy/Misty or Sunny variants.

Sunny
  • Severity: Harmless
  • Occurrence: Default (between all other weathers)
  • Length: 10m - 30m

Cloudy/Misty
  • Severity: Harmless
  • Occurrence: Very Common
  • Length: 1:30 - 4:30

Windy
  • Severity: Harmless
  • Occurrence: Very Common
  • Length: 1:00 - 4:30

Light Rain
  • Severity: Harmless
  • Occurrence: Very Common
  • Length: 1:00 - 4:30

Downpour
  • Severity: Harmless
  • Occurrence: Common
  • Length: 1:30 - 4:30

Note:
Sunny weathers can cause a minor visual glitch when first loading a map where the JWE distance-fog effect won't load in if:
- It's a new save
- The save was made during a sunny rain weather

This will fix itself when the first weather spawns and then won't happen again until you load another save. It can sometimes also be fixed by just going into the Escape menu. Even though the glitch only occurs when first loading into a save, it can be a little annoying - so the mod comes in a "Lite" variant that doesn't include Sunny weathers for people who don't wish to see the glitch at all.

Dangerous Weather

Damaging storms have been massively reworked to add a lot more variety to the types of danger they present to your park. A new storm will normally occur between 20 minutes and 60 minutes after the last one, but more severe storms put a longer cooldown on damaging weather to give you time to rebuild and play.

Gales
Powerful winds cause discomfort to your dinosaurs and light damage to your buildings. Using a helicopter is ill-advised. The weather is dry, however, so while jeeps won't be pushed around nearly as much - though they will still encounter a bit of resistance.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: Very Low
  • Length: 1:30 - 2:30
  • Chance: ~20%
  • Average Occurrence: every 3.5 hours
  • Storm Cooldown: 20:00 - 60:00

Storm
A regular JWE storm. 25% chance that it will pass very quickly.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: Low
  • Length: 1:30 - 2:30 (0:45 - 1:00 if passing quickly)
  • Chance: ~40%
  • Average Occurrence: every 1.5 hours
  • Storm Cooldown: 20:00 - 60:00

Hurricane
A stronger storm with near gale-force winds ravages the island. Piloting aircraft is very difficult and jeeps, too, struggle somewhat on the wet soil.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: Medium
  • Length: 2:00 - 3:00
  • Chance: ~20%
  • Average Occurrence: every 3.5 hours
  • Storm Cooldown: 20:00 - 1:00:00

Typhoon
The rainy season has arrived! Typhoons are marginally stronger than regular storms, but last significantly longer. The milder winds cause only light damage to your buildings, however the sheer length of the storm greatly amplifies that. Have your ranger teams on standby.
With how long a typhoon lasts, many dinosaurs will become stressed out. There is therefore a very long cooldown afterwards to let you build without worrying about more storms.

Note:
With Expanded Behaviour installed, you can sedate dinosaurs before a typhoon and easily wake them up after the weather has cleared.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: High
  • Length: 4:00 (Easy) | 5:00 (Normal\Hard) | 6:00 (Jurassic)
  • Chance: ~7%
  • Average Occurrence: every 9 hours
  • Storm Cooldown: 40:00 - 1:30:00

Tornado
You know them, you've seen them. But have you?
Tornadoes are far too common and easy to deal with in JWE. Therefore, they are now much rarer but significantly stronger and last longer when they do spawn.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: High
  • Length: 2:00 - 2:30
  • Chance: ~14%
  • Average Occurrence: every 4.5 hours
  • Storm Cooldown: 30:00 - 2:00:00

Extreme
You don't know them. You haven't seen them. And you probably won't. Double tornadoes.

Stats:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Severity: Extreme
  • Length: 1:15 - 1:45
  • Chance: ~0.3%
  • Average Occurrence: every 220 hours (~9 days). You'll be extremely unlucky to ever see this.
  • Storm Cooldown: 40:00 - 2:00:00

FAQ

Why is the version < v1.0?
The exact weights, lengths and cooldowns are not set-in-stone yet. It's a bit randomised which adds to the experience, but makes testing things like this hard unless I have a larger test base. If you experience things turning up too often, do let me know! Though if certain weathers feel too rare, first consider how many there are in the pool of weathers that the game selects from.

Why haven't you added anything to Sandbox?
Sandbox scripts don't decompile fully so I can't edit them. However, they also hard-code 4 weather types: None, RainOnly, LowIntensityStorm, HighIntensityStorm. This means that if I add new weathers, you won't be able to select them from the menu and so they won't ever show up.

Why haven't you added anything to Campaign?
Campaign islands introduce different storms on different islands, and have scripted storm events - I need to replay the campaign to see where these happen and I haven't the time nor the patience to do so right now.
It's also a highly-scripted experience only good for your first time playing - It's therefore extremely low-priority for modding.

What happened to that Apocalypse weather you demoed?
That will come in its own Apocalypse mod later on.

When will <X> weather show up?
Weathers are randomly selected from two pools - a Harmless pool, and a Damaging pool. The harmless pool has a shorter cooldown, so they appear more often. If the cooldown for a Damaging storm is up, it will force a damaging storm (this is vanilla JWE behaviour). So if you save a game right before a harmless storm, for instance, that save will always first load a harmless storm. If you save right before a damaging storm, it will also first load a damaging storm.

How do I install the mod?
Open the zip file you downloaded, then copy the "ExpandedWeather" folder inside it into your ovldata folder.
