ME&PAL: "Meet Everywhere & Play All Levels" Mod v2.0, for Journey
(works with 15.07.2020 Steam release - Journey.exe size: 58514KB)

- Mod compiled by Alazar88, made from the combined efforts of him, Rebi, Paleologos, and Yupa_Miralda
- Journey copyrights/trademarks belong to Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC
- Journey developed by thatgamecompany ( thanks so much <3 )

> !!! README CONTAINS SPOILERS: !!! <
I strongly recommend first-time players experience the game normally without using the mod anyway, it's a magical experience just the way it is.
___________________________________________________________

With the ME&PAL mod, you are able to meet a companion and seamlessly play together everywhere - even in places you normally can't meet, such as right after starting a new game, in Chapter Select, and in Paradise.
You can also play in all the levels built into the game, including the levels used for the ending credits as well as "level 09" (a prototype version of Pink Desert), and easily visit all the levels from the Chapter Select hub.

The mod's functions have not been tested 100% fully, but I am very confident that they are all safe to use throughout the game, other than one pair of hotkeys that cause crashes if pressed at the wrong time (in short: don't press Alt+I or Alt+O unless standing still on solid ground and while not being in a cutscene).
There are a few unusual yet harmless things that can briefly happen as side effects of the functions, but most often they are more like fun surprises instead of bothersome bugs, and they will not affect any companion who is not using the mod.

Please use this mod responsibly, and as always, be courteous and sensitive to your companions.

SETUP
___________________________________________________________

To use the mod, just open the .EXE program >after< you open Journey, and press the hotkeys while playing Journey (either while Journey is main active window, or not).
If you close Journey and re-open it, you will also need to close and re-open the mod.

Or, you can use Cheat Engine with the included .CETRAINER or .CT file, and the hotkeys work the same way - easy Cheat Engine setup instructions for beginners are at end of readme.

> REMEMBER that when you press a hotkey to activate its function, there is no effect until the next time a level loads, and then it remains in effect unless you override it with another function. Quitting to title or going to Chapter Select while already there will reload the level, as will restarting the level in Paradise.<

Since this mod's .EXE program is a "trainer" program made with Cheat Engine, security/antivirus software might falsely detect it as malware, just like it usually does with Cheat Engine even though it's harmless by itself. This mod only affects Journey and does nothing else, and does not permanently alter any files.
If your security software does not allow you to extract/run this mod or Cheat Engine, read the software's help files or search online to find out how to create a security exception so you can use the mod.

MEETING COMPANIONS EVERYWHERE
___________________________________________________________

> You can ONLY meet companions in "impossible" places if they are also using one of this mod's special meeting functions, or otherwise manipulating the same code. If you connect to someone in the "normal" levels who isn't using the mod's functions, your mod will have no effect on their game. <

With these functions, in addition to meeting in levels where you normally can't meet at all, you can probably also meet in certain parts of "normal" levels where it is rare or impossible to meet; also, you can meet "sooner" in any normal level.
As usual, in order to meet someone you must be nearby where they are in their game, but a short distance away from them: about two "War Machine" / "Guardian" lengths apart.

HOTKEYS/FUNCTIONS:
> Use a hotkey before going into a level or restarting it, for the function to be active when the level loads the rest of the game afterward (until you activate a different function). <

- Alt+T : "Meet companions everywhere" - meet in impossible places including new game/Chapter Select, credits levels, Paradise, and most likely the few small areas in other levels where you never seem to meet anyone
- Alt+G : "Connect everywhere" - works sort of the same as above, is more "normal" with few or no mod-related bugs/surprises, but only lets you meet in Paradise and probably helps meet at some places in regular levels; DON'T USE for new game/Chapter Select or credits levels, since although you can connect to someone and they may see you in their own game, YOU won't be able to see/hear/interact with them unless you enter a normal level together
- Alt+Y : "Normal meeting mode" - you only meet companions in the places you already could without the mod

"Meet companions everywhere" causes a fun surprise during History Lesson cutscenes, however despite what you see happen it does NOT prevent you from disconnecting if you or your companion wait too long to join each other in the light circle.
This function also causes some fun surprises that might happen at the end of Snow, at the start of Paradise, during the credits, and when starting a new game after credits.

> For the most "normal" experience that still has companions meetable everywhere: <
1. Have "meet companions everywhere" active for new game/Chapter Select or playing in the credits levels
2. Activate "connect everywhere" before leaving Chapter Select and going into normal game level, and leave it that way for the rest of the game
3. Activate "normal meeting mode" once the credits start
4. Activate "meet companions everywhere" once the credits show Chapter Select at night.

-----------------------------------------------------
LEVEL-SPECIFIC MEETING HELP/TIPS:
-----------------------------------------------------
NEW GAME/CHAPTER SELECT

To meet companions at the start of a new game, "meet companions everywhere" must be active before the start menu level loads (and it does this as soon as you open Journey) - so you may have to start new game, press the hotkey, quit to title from pause menu, and start again.

The gameplay in the level is exactly like normal, except you can't hear your companion chirping.

Chapter Select is not coded with two players in mind, so if you both go into a cutscene at the same time, you may push each other out of the way a little to get into the same position.
It might be a good idea to approach the top of the "title card" dune with one person aiming for the left-side tombstone and the other aiming for the right-side pair, and also to take turns getting your first bit of scarf at the broken statue.

You can leave the level either through the exit hallway or the portals around the hub, and you will stay connected to your companion and start the new level at the same time; this seems to not always work for some credits levels, but you will still be able to meet again once you're in the level.
There is an interesting surprise that happens when you start Broken Bridges together - it also sometimes happens during normal gameplay, but is much more consistent and noticeable when entering with a companion.

To disconnect from a companion and stay in Chapter Select with companions meetable, you need to either get far away from them, or activate "normal meeting mode" and go to Chapter Select; then you would activate "meet companions everywhere" and go to Chapter Select again or start new game.
There is often a fun(?) but persistent surprise if you meet a new companion after one has dusted away - this lasts until you leave Chapter Select, or restart level with "normal meeting mode" active. Might also be "fixed" in other ways still to be determined.
-----------------------------------------------------
SNOW / MOUNTAIN

Even if you have a companion at the end of Snow, you may still want to have one of the special meeting functions active before entering Paradise, so that if you get disconnected due to brief internet loss or something then you might still meet again.

If "meet companions everywhere" is active during Snow, you will have an interesting surprise if you end the level with a companion.
-----------------------------------------------------
PARADISE (FINAL LEVEL)

You are able to meet companions regardless of whether you finished Snow with them.

Paradise works exactly like normal, other than maybe a few fun surprises.
For the most "normal" experience with companions meetable, have the "connect everywhere" function active: that way you will walk by your companion's side when you go into the light at the summit.

If "meet companions everywhere" is active instead, you still walk together with your companion, but it looks a lot like you're alone since your companion will walk directly in front or behind you; also you hear footsteps that may distract from the emotional music.
However, with "meet companions everywhere" active, you may also have some fun surprises at the start of Paradise: definitely if starting with a companion, and possibly if starting without one.

If you don't have any special meeting function active while you are in Paradise, but you are alone and want to be able to meet companions, activate one of the special meeting functions and then do "Restart Level" from the menu.

If you want to immediately start another new game after the credits and be able to meet companions, make sure "meet companions everywhere" is turned on by the time the credits show Chapter Select at night, so it is active in the true Chapter Select level where the sun rises.

There are some fun surprises possible if you have "meet companions everywhere" active all the way through the entire credits to the start menu and in a new game, especially if both you and your companion have it active. If you want to avoid the final surprise that happens when you both have it active, then activate "normal mode" sometime during the credits; if you also want to be able to meet companions right away in a new game like mentioned above, then activate "normal mode" while you see Sunken City, and activate "meet companions" once you see Broken Bridge/Chapter Select.
-----------------------------------------------------
CREDITS LEVELS

In the credits levels, you have to be twice as far away from someone as normal to be able to connect to them, since all objects are actually 1/2 the normal size (to be able to fit multiple "levels" into one level).
This means you also jump/fly twice as high, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------
LEVEL 09

The mod is not actually needed to meet companions in level 09, just to go there without editing your save file.

PLAYING IN ALL LEVELS
___________________________________________________________

>Even if you're not a new player, I'd recommend you do a good amount of playing the normal game (including visiting a few out-of-bounds areas) before beginning to explore the credits levels, to appreciate them better and not ruin any surprises you might get while being shown OOB's in the regular levels. <

LEVEL SWAPS:
After using one of these hotkeys, whenever you "go to" the specified level (either by using its Chapter Select portal/the main level exit to Broken Bridge, or just progressing through game), you will go to its replacement level instead:

- Alt+O : Replaces Sunken City (3rd level) with Paradise, so you can go there with Chapter Select portal
- You will not have "Restart Level" in your menu like you usually do
- Completing the level/watching credits will not make you level up to next tier of robe pattern

- Alt+J : Replaces Broken Bridge (2nd level) with "Level_Credits", the 1st part of the credits: includes Snow, Tower and Underground
- You must enable controls/movement with hotkey before entering, see below
- When you enter, you will be stuck walking in a straight line for 80 seconds, but then you can move freely
- You will have the same "coldness" condition from the Snow level reducing your speed/flying abilities
- Has no exit, you must quit or go to Chapter Select

- Alt+K : Replaces Underground (5th level) with "Level_Matt", the 2nd part of the credits: includes Sunken City at mid-dayand Pink Desert at sunset
!> GAME CRASHES if screensaver plays a certain scene, so don't let screensaver start
- You must enable controls/movement with hotkey before entering, see below
- Has no exit, you must quit or go to Chapter Select

- Alt+N : Replaces Tower (6th level) with "Level_Chris", the 3rd part of the credits: includes Broken Bridge and Chapter Select, both at night
- Has no exit, you must quit or go to Chapter Select

- Alt+M : Replaces Tower with "Level_Bryan", commonly known as "level 09": a prototype version of Pink Desert
!> GAME CRASHES if your camera's position goes into the bowl/pit/valley area on the western side of the level, with the tower that usually has a symbol on top, so don't go there
- Unusual things happen to you in level 09; if you don't want to be stuck with them for a while, quit while the carpets are carrying you away to Sunken City at the end, so your game won't save
- Exits into normal Sunken City, which is before Tower, so your scarf might be "too long" if you collected enough symbols; you should probably avoid playing this way, to avoid making things awkward for any non-modding companions you meet

- Alt+L : Resets all levels to normal - all Chapter Select portals/game progression behave the way they would without the mod

HAVE CONTROLS IN CREDITS:
These hotkeys affect your ability to actually play in the first two credits levels once you visit them. As usual, they only become active once you load a level after using the hotkey.
!> GAME CRASHES if either hotkey is used while swimming, and maybe in other situations, but should be safe if you're just standing still on solid ground, and you aren't in a cutscene or something.

- Alt+I : Enables controls in "Level_Credits" and "Level_Matt". Causes problems in other levels, see below.
- Alt+O : Disables controls in "Level_Credits" and "Level_Matt", and prevents you from having related problems in other levels.
- The credits-movement function also makes you sink in water/goo, makes you fly the normal less-exciting way in Paradise, and possibly has other boring and/or negative effects. Maybe some fun surprises? Haven't tested fully.

USING CHEAT ENGINE WITH JOURNEY
___________________________________________________________

If you want to use Cheat Engine instead of the standalone .EXE, first you need to have Cheat Engine, if you don't then download from https://cheatengine.org/downloads.php and install it.

The easiest way is to use the .CETRAINER file:
- Open both Journey and Cheat Engine.
- In Cheat Engine, click File > Open File, or just click the button with a picture of a folder.
- Open the .CETRAINER file. A window may pop up saying "Access Violation" as the mod loads, but the mod still works fine even if it does.

If you want to use the .CT file:
- Open both Journey and Cheat Engine.
- In Cheat Engine, click File > Open Process, or just click the button in the top-left corner with a picture of a monitor.
- In the list that pops up, find the Journey process and select it, and click "Open" (Journey should be at the bottom of the list if you just opened it a minute ago).
- Back in the main Cheat Engine window, click File > Open File, or just click the button with a picture of a folder.
- In the file explorer window that pops up, navigate to wherever you have the mod's .CT file, and open that file.
Once that is done loading, you can just put Cheat Engine on the taskbar, and use the hotkeys while you play Journey.
