This mod attempts to restore the surveillance system from Hitman 2016, where each security camera was assigned a specific recorder. If you were recorded, you had to erase the evidence by deleting the recording linked to the camera that recorded you. In the current system, bypassing surveillance is too easy since destroying any recorder on a map disables all the cameras. This change was made to simplify the game and reduce confusion, so players wouldn’t need to figure out which recorder was connected to which camera. However, this leads to some questionable logic, such as why destroying the recorder at Sapienza’s church also affects the recorder at the mansion or Biolab.
Through trial and error, I developed a new system that addresses some of these issues with camera-recorder links. By default, cameras and their corresponding recorders are now color-coded when the mod is active. When recorded, a map icon will also appear, showing the location of the recorder that must be destroyed to erase the evidence. Destroying the recorder of a particular color will only disable cameras of that same color.
Due to the way the mod works, the Silent Assassin indicator won’t turn green if you’ve been recorded and deleted the corresponding recorder. However, the recorded icon will fade, indicating that the evidence has been erased, and you’ll still be on track for Silent Assassin as long as all other objectives are met. I made the mod fairly configurable. If you want a greater challenge, you can disable the color coding for cameras and turn off the map tracker. You can also enable or disable the recording system for specific maps if the default setup doesn’t suit your preferences.
A few security camera bugs have already been addressed by the Hitman WOA Unofficial Community Patch and are not included in this mod.
All security camera and recorder configurations were originally set by IO Interactive and, for the most part, make sense. However, some recorders are linked to more cameras than others—one recorder might control six cameras, while another controls only two.
I’ve made personal adjustments to only a few maps: Paris, where I added an additional recorder to the Attic and moved a few cameras from the Master difficulty; and Bangkok (which requires the optional Restored Bangkok Security Recorder) where I separated the cameras from the shed and building.Paris and Dubai use a different system than the other maps because IO didn’t separate the cameras and recorders on these levels. For these two maps, when enabled, the secondary recorder will function as a backup. If you’re spotted and erase the evidence by destroying on the first recorder, you’ll have to be careful to not get recorded again. When recorded for the first time, you can destroy any of the two recorders.
Due to the sheer number of maps and variables, I can only do so much testing. If you encounter any issues or want to temporarily return to the vanilla surveillance system, you can use the camera grid option, which is enabled by default. Turning off this option in the in-game menu will restore the vanilla surveillance system, and the LEDs will turn green to indicate that the surveillance system is functioning as stock.
Other Notes:
When "destroy recorder" objective is active, destroying a recorder should generally all recorders on the map. The reason for this is that I was unable to find a way send the destroy recorder event without doing so. Not having this event triggered can lead to the player being unable to exit when "destroy recorder" is a primary objective (generally as part of escalations).
