I love Freelancer, a lot, but from the very start, I've felt like the leader names were lacking. I started seeing repeat names very quickly, and some of the cooler names I had seen in the early trailers, like Dark Psykonaut & The Lotus Connection, seemed to be entirely missing! I went into the files, looking for answers.
It turns out that there used to be 14 syndicate types with about 10 names each, but for the final game it was condensed down to just 8. Many of the names were redistributed, but some were never given a new home, and many were just lumped into the Sick Games category as a sort of "misc" (seriously - it contains three different early syndicate types. One of which, Financial Crime, had 15 names rather than 10/11)
This resulted in a lopsided distribution where the heaviest category, Sick Games, had a whopping 39 possible names; while the smallest, Eco Crime, still only had its original 10.
In any case, tl;dr here's the final count of how many names are in each list with this mod:
Arms Trafficking: 14
Assassination: 16
Organ Trafficking: 15
Big Pharma: 20
Eco Crime: 12
Psy-Ops: 20
Espionage: 16
Sick Games: 25
As you can see, it's much more balanced! You'll see some "new" names that were previously unused, and should be translated for all languages by IO's teams.
I did still struggle to find names that fit Eco Crime. I've come up with a few good ones myself, so maybe some day I'll look into adding custom ones. It should be possible, in theory!
