Half-Life 2 Substance is a mod from 2005, later updated in 2015 as the Steamworks update to Half-Life 2 had broken most of the old mods. I just ported the files from Moddb to Nexusmods, here's hoping everything still works.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong but after running the installer I try running SMOD Stanalone.exe and after selecting Half-Life 2 Substance I get a launcher error "Failed to load the launcher DLL: The specified module could not be found."
Yes, but you would have to find simple mods which have exclusively BSP files (the maps) and some textures or sounds. They cannot have their own modded DLLs in the \Bin\ subfolder (if they're using the vanilla ones, they should be fine).
In practice, you would move over that mod's files into the VR Missions folder (like placing the BSP files into \Maps\) and edit one of the chapter files (i.e. \cfg\chapter1.cfg):
chapterskiller exec freeman map 1_sm_off_course
Here the chapter is loading map "1_sm_off_course": if your map is called City17.bsp, you would want to change the last line to "map City17". Like this, the first VR Mission would load the new mod.
Hey, I looked through Half Life 2, and Half Life 2 Update, but I couldnt find a Sourcemods folder at all. Should I just create a new folder inside the main directory, called Sourcemods, then put your mod in there? Would that work?
Or could there be a folder with a different name for some reason?
Ok, real question: How in the hell do you save? I got this up and running, and so far so good, but, then, no saving? It doesn't have auto-save, and it doesn't say anything on manually saving. Help.
Check if there's a quicksave and quickload key in the controls, that you can customize. Something between F5 and F9. Else, go to the Codec menu (when you press Esc) and press the buttons.
