Befriend Theseus and Asterius is a story mod for Hades that adds Theseus and Asterius as befriendable characters, allowing Zagreus to give them nectar and ambrosia and advance their storylines. The mod adds over 100 new conversations, new keepsakes, and new subplots (including romantic ones) to the game. Theseus and Asterius are located outside of the Elysium stadium where their boss battle occurs and can be interacted with there.
The conversations aren't voiced, so to avoid too much alternation between voiced and unvoiced dialogue, the rest of the game's dialogue is unchanged. The in-game explanation for this is that Theseus has to act like he still hates Zagreus in front of his audience, as that's what they've grown to expect from him. This means that you won't miss out on seeing any existing lines if you use the mod.
This mod is safe to use with cross saves and cloud saves, although it's not recommended to switch to a platform without the mod installed during a run when using one of the new keepsakes, as they won't transfer so you'll have no keepsake for the remainder of the run (or until you can switch to a new one).

Installation:
Back up your save prior to installing the mod. Follow the instructions for downloading ModUtil and Mod Importer, making sure to install the SJSON module from the optional Mod Importer files, then place the BefriendTheseusAsterius folder in your Mods folder (located in the Content folder) and run modimporter.py. If you have a Mac, download the Mac version from the optional files list on Nexus and add this to your Mods folder instead.

I'm receiving a critical error when I try to install the mod with Mod Importer on my Mac. What should I do?
If the error mentions Win/Packages, this means that you forgot to download the Mac version of the mod. Download this, put this into the Mods folder instead, then run modimporter.py again. If you see another error, contact the Hades modding Discord for further assistance.
Why can't I give gifts to Theseus and Asterius?
This is by design, as Asterius has an existing dialogue line that needs to play before it would make sense to gift him anything. Theseus will likely be giftable earlier than Asterius, but both have conditions that will be need to be met in game first. A number of Theseus's dialogue lines will differ depending on his friendship level with you, so make sure to talk to him early on if you want to experience angry, boastful Theseus in all his glory.
Why can't I talk to Theseus? I don't see the option to.
This is an infrequent visual glitch that occurs because of his location. Push the button you'd use to talk to him normally and you'll see the talk/gift display pop up. I'm looking into how I can fix this, as placing him in other locations caused some other visual glitches.
What mods is this compatible with?
It has only been tested with Mod Importer and ModUtil. It should work with most mods, but cheat mods that deal with keepsakes or relationship levels may cause issues. If you run into a problem, contact me on the Hades modding Discord (@Yoshimax/Cosmo#5699) or on here and let me know.
Why did my keepsake disappear when I loaded the game on my Switch?
This will occur whenever you open the game on an unmodded device or computer. It's recommended that you don't switch devices during a run while using the custom keepsakes. While the mod protects against this causing any crashes, you'll still lose your keepsake mid run, which isn't good for gameplay. When you next have an opportunity to switch your keepsakes, you'll get a keepsake again.
Why is my game crashing when I get to the chamber before the Elysium stadium?
This is a known issue (that also occurred during my testing) that will occur if you don't have the SJSON module installed. If Mod Importer says that the SJSON module isn't installed and that SJSON edits are being skipped, then the game will crash as it can't load the correct data to spawn Theseus and Asterius. Just install the module from the optional Mod Importer files page, run modimporter.py again, and go back to the chamber before the stadium and this will be fixed. If you run into any issues and do have this module installed, report it as a bug so I can take a look.
