Honest opinion: I thought this was going to be a Rick Gomez mod just like the youtube videos but was very surprised to find out this is a fandub. This is mostly good but flawed. Definitely better than Caleb Pierce. When Zack breathes right before the "Boy oh boy" it sounded exactly like Rick Gomez. But the "is steep" part and "Come and get it" were very very flat and don't have the same impact or emotion Rick gave it. I wish the voice actor for this did a few more takes with better direction. Still gonna be using this since literally anything would be better than Caleb. I am absolutely baffled and disappointed that nobody out there on any website has made a mod that puts Rick over this scene just like the youtube videos already have. I'm looking everywhere and can't find one. WTF...
On some ways, I agree with you. Some lines should definitely have been redone. However, I remember when I first ever saw and heard this scene way back when, I thought Caleb Pierce sounded fairly similarly to Rick Gomez. Or at least, he sounded closer to Rick than this fandub actor. This actor's voice sounds too deep and mellow, at least in his delivery of this scene, to seem like it's coming from a character like Zack Fair.
Interestingly, when I got to Zack's extra scene from the ending of the Intermission DLC, I actually thought Caleb sounded better and closer to Rick than in Zack's first scene at the ending of the main game. Only difference I could ever tell from Caleb's voice and Rick's is that Caleb just sounds ever slightly more nasally than Rick's, for lack of a better description.
That redeemed it a tiny bit more for me. I'm willing to give Caleb more of a chance, as we've heard only very little from him thus far. But I hope he does not further ruin Zack's character from what so many thought at first.
This sounds so much better than the voice in game by default. Whomever was the voice director with Zack's scene must've been half asleep that day. It sounds so terrible compared to Crisis Core.
Yeah, Rick Gomez keeps playing in my head whenever I see Zack so I know how you feel! Look, I say we give Caleb Pierce a chance. He's gonna be Zack whether we like it or not, and honestly the voice work in FF7R has been pretty stellar. I'm pretty sure he'll surprise us. At least we have mods, right? So I'm glad you liked it! Let me know if you want us to do any other character and we'll try to get the voice as close as we can!
This is amazing! I absolutely love the OG Zack he's my favourite character. I've just model swapped Cloud in to Zack in the FF7 remake and starting another play through as Zack. Reckon you guys would ever voice Clouds lines as Zack in the Remake?
That would be pretty amazing! Whether or not it happens, thanks for giving FFVII fans this mod! Rick Gomez is the only actor I wish they brought back for remake, so getting a mod with someone who sounds a little closer to him is great! The new Zack VA sounded good in Intergrade, but his delivery of the lines in Zack's iconic last stand just didn't work for me. Maybe it was the directing that day but who knows, it just didn't give off the same emotion as the original scene. I think your mod helps to bring some of that back, so thanks again! Looking forward to playing through the original game with voice acting as well!
Great performance! really nailed it. I've got an OG playthrough with Echo-S7 voice mod and sweet 60fps in my near future. Can't wait to hear the rest of the cast in remake. -neofaizan
