First of all, thank you for creating this mod. I’ve tried others, but this is the only one that has brought an actual performance benefit, it’s truly fantastic.
I wanted to ask if anyone knows which setting needs to be changed in the .ini file regarding the effects: as you can see in the attached images, 'squares' are displayed instead of the actual effects, and I wanted to know which setting to modify to restore the original quality.

(For example, some effects like the arrow that indicates the direction are also missing)

I've tried commenting out the various 'FX.' or 'niagara.' settings, but nothing has changed.
Even 'r.FastVRam.PostProcessMaterial' doesn't seem to be related.
Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not very familiar with Unreal Engine and I'm not sure what else to try.

    ---

    Another question:
While playing with the various settings, I noticed that setting 'r.MassiveEnvironment.ViewLODScale' to 0.1 significantly reduces the annoying pop-in, but I can't save it in the .ini file. Every time I launch the game, it automatically resets to 0.05, and I have to change it manually from the console. I also tried putting it under the 'ConsoleVariables' section, but nothing changed

The fast vram stuff is just optimization trying to balance the memory around so it shouldn't wreck any visuals. Try material quality (try 1), or maybe separate translucency (try 0) and report back. As for the latter it's really hit or miss with engine ini mods from what others have told me. I'll try to iron out what I can in future updates.

Thanks for getting back to me! I tried what you suggested, but I didn’t really notice any difference.
So, I decided to mess around with all the settings in the .ini file one by one and found a few things:

      • r.MipMapLODBias=16 ---> This is what’s messing up the in-game effects like the ones I showed you. The default value is 0. I played around with it a bit, and it seems like the highest value you can set without totally breaking effects like smoke, fire, etc., is 2. Once you hit 3 or higher, it starts showing "squares."
      • r.VolumetricFog=0 ---> It doesn’t mess things up everywhere, but in some spots—like caves or the Nibelheim reactor—it seems to completely break the ambient lighting, making everything look super washed out. I switched it back to 1, which is the default.
      • r.VolumetricFog.DepthDistributionScale=4 ---> If you turn r.VolumetricFog=1 back on, this setting can cause a weird effect, like the camera is pushing through rain. The game’s default is 32, but I dropped it to 16, and 8 might also work fine. Going any lower brings back that annoying effect I mentioned earlier.
Turning on r.VolumetricFog costs you about 1-3 fps, depending on the area. It’s not ideal, but if you’re okay with that trade-off, it’s the only way to keep it on without messing up the visuals. If there were a way to keep VolumetricFog turned off and get rid of all that annoying lighting, I think that would be the best option for optimization.

Yea the cave thing with fog on looked kinda ugly before so it was just disabled for now. I'm looking into some non-ini type stuff that should help out on FPS so I'll probably do a fog or no-fog version like the remake tweak. The other information you found will also help out so I appreciate that tidbit too.

There's nothing that's changing resolution or aspect ratio in the current version, check your display settings in the menus. If you're trying to run from SD card that's highly inadvisable.

    Hi ButteryBits,

First of all, I'd like to thank you for this mod, however, if I follow the instructions, I end up having worse performance.

I tried it on multiple Proton versions, but unfortunately my FPS sticks around the 20-21. Once I re-enable dynamic res in the ini file, and set the lowest res to 66%, then it shows similar results as in your pictures.

A couple people have reported mixed results about configs sticking. I know it messes up if game settings are changed after installing engine, and FFVIIHook has to be up to date. Other issue could potentially be storage speed. I'm working on updating to hopefully get around the issues.

I had rename the `Engine.ini` file to `GameUserSettings.ini` and place it in the correct directory. However, when I launch the game, nothing changes. After exiting the game and checking the `GameUserSettings.ini` file, I see that it has reverted to the default values set by the game. Why is this happening? Please help me, i really want to play in a fullscreen 16:10 on SD.

Great mod. I had to rename the engine.ini file to GameUserSettings.ini to prevent the game from creating a new ini and reading from that.

This combined with the DLSS enabler via optiscaler to enable XESS makes the image quality vastly superior than stock.

For personal settings, I have re-enabled dynamic resolution scaling in the ini and set the minimum to 66% in the game settings. At a 30fps cap, the game doesn't need to stoop down to 480p but rather hovers around ~540-720p in gameplay, usually leveling out in the 600's in open world areas. I also set a 12W tdp limit as performance doesn't degrade much and I can benefit from a longer battery and quieter fan.

Thank you so much for this mod

Noted. Currently trying to squeeze out what performance I can without FSR or screen resolution drops... It's really stubborn about freeing up FPS

Yeah, especially in towns, you'll have to learn to live with the drops

Hey, I'm sorry but is this how the latest 2.5 version is supposed to look ? Because I know the Deck has to sacrifice a lot to make this game run but this is a bit too much 60ubU0y.jpeg (1280×800) I mean poor Aerith lol

EDIT : I'm stupid, screen percentage is by default at 70% in the ini, that's what you get when you don't read

Jumping in to say thank you. I only game on Steamdeck and 100-50% resolution on all low is abysmal.

Maybe this is cope, but, with a couple of performance tweaks that grant OLED Steamdeck 25% uplift, we possibly could have medium textures, background models, and character detail at 100% resolution in a couple of months, after a few patches and mods.

Considering 100% resolution allows upscaling to 1080P from 720P resolution, it'd be the best way to experience the game's graphics with SteamDeck's limitations.

It's probably the lod shadows being on, which might have to get dropped in favor of performance anyway
