Simple Explanation:

- Five (5) new one-handed swords.
- They are modular, and reasonably powerful.
- They are NOT level-listed, but they can be added to leveled lists simply by installing ROBCO - Weapon Leveled Lists Injection and checking the option.
- Mostly inspired by modern-historical military swords, mostly named in Bethesda's style, all to fit in with the vanilla aesthetic of FO4 as much as possible.
- Also an overhaul of the Revolutionary Sword to match the new swords.
- Also a simple base damage buff for the Chinese Officer Sword.
- Also a little bonus for the Machete just so that it can play too.

I Love To Read Month:

First off - honorable mentions to great modders in the comments (DegenerateDak and 2gtandknives), who turned me toward the idea of injector scripts. However, my first attempt at script-injection did not work out as planned.

This time, Akaixz has agreed to add Modern Swords to the distribution compatibility list for his own injector script mod: ROBCO - Weapon Leveled Lists Injection, and he's added it himself, so I can't botch it this time.

If you want to use this method, just download this mod (Modern Swords v.099), then install ROBCO - Weapon Leveled Lists Injection, and check the appropriate box.

If you already have v1.0 of Modern Swords, you will have to downgrade this mod to v0.99, which I have isolated in the files tab. This should be as simple as uninstalling Modern Swords v1.0, deleting it, then downloading and installing Modern Swords v0.99 (and then ROBCO - Weapon Leveled Lists Injection). I do not know if starting a new save file would be required, but it should be fine to do mid-save? I hope?

As always, PLEASE let me know in the comments if something is broken or horribly unbalanced! I am still very inexperienced with making/publishing mods.

Secondly - The swords!

The "Army Trooper Sword"

I fixed the Revolutionary Sword. I won't even put 'fixed' in quotation marks, it's just better now. It has a selection of blades that look like they could actually cut something. The grip/hilt looks more like a real, non-prop sword. It even still maintains the rough/basic 'soldier' look of the vanilla Revolutionary Sword. To add compliment to... uh... healing? You can even personalize it by wrapping the grip in rubber, or polishing up the hilt, or replacing it with shiny brass to resemble your commanding officers.

The "Army Officer Sword"

Imagining that swords were still being used in 2077 by the American army (since they were still being used up to WWI IRL, and clearly China in-game was using them in 2077) - commanding officers' swords would have had fancier hilts and higher-quality blades than those of their troops. Just like during the civil war, many swords would have been imported from Europe, where some of the greatest sword designers and manufacturers were still supplying the world. This would have been one of those imports, since it's blatantly the 1796 British Light Cavalry Sabre hilt, morphed to look a little more robust. You will notice that the "Curved" and "Balanced" blades are also that of the 1796, with the latter being very morphed. Several blade options, brass or steel hilts, two grip colours, make it your own.

The "Naval Officer Sword"

My personal favorite - the kind of sword I'd always wanted in a Bethesda game ever since that cutlass-sabre in Oblivion. This is a model imported from Kingy's Sketchfab (this person's work is incredible by the way, much respect, I will link to their page), morphed into a different shape altogether. It now looks a bit more like an American military sabre in rough silhouette, and since it has a more basket-y guard than the "Army" Officer Sword, I decided to classify it as "Naval" issue. Yes, I know the screenshot says "Navy", that's a prototype screenshot. Same blade/hilt options as the Army Officer Sword, but with several more grip options.

The "Air Force Officer Sword"

Two inspirations here - those IRL modern ceremonial military swords with tiny cruciform hilts and skinny straight blades, and the random thought of: "Hey, what if I copied the rear quillon of the 1796 Sabre, put it on the front, and removed the knuckle bow, so it's almost like a mameluke-style sabre?" Well, now you get this thing. Originally an experiment, but I kind of liked it for variety's sake, and hey, we don't want the third member of America's favorite military trifecta to feel left out, so - "Air Force". It's basically just the Army Officer Sword with a slightly different hilt and default blade.

The "Japanese Officer Sword"

Two different inspirations for this one - those IRL "shin gunto" Japanese military swords with factory-stamped blades and grips, and the random thought of: "Hey, there are a lot of nice katana bits stuck inside the vanilla Shishkebab. I wonder if I could pry them out in Blender, and stick them together alone?" Turns out I'm not the first one to have this idea (others have made katanas out of the Shishkebab and uploaded them here), but as you can see, it works insanely well. Heck, try it yourself! The default blade looks really factory-produced and unfitting, which is intentional - it can be swapped out for something much more like a real katana blade (the one pulled from the Shishkebab!), with a handful of grip colors to choose from.

The "Smallsword"

I couldn't even think of a good way to Bethesda-name this one for FO4, since I have to admit, it's a weird addition. So, I just called it what it is - a Smallsword. This, I feel, would be the kind of thing the player might find rarely, like in a museum, instead of in a random American's basement/garage/attic. These were popular among the higher-status of North America's early colonists, and George Washington himself was well-known to cherish his (he wore it damn near everywhere). This one was also SEVERELY twisted out of Kingy's same sabre model I used for the Naval Officer Sword. It came about when I noticed that the knife animations lined up just fine for swords, and a stabby sword would make good use of them. Obviously, this sword uses said knife animations, so now it's basically the longest knife in the game. Brass or steel hilts, ivory or black grips, and a handful of blade options (including a beefier one that activates regular sword animations, which is a thing that existed IRL too) await you.

Wait, how are we still not done?

The vanilla Machete (with new non-vanilla attachment!)

I squished the grip down to a more reasonable size, upped the base damage (I'm sorry but getting chopped with a dang machete is roughly as fatal/painful as getting shot with a handgun bullet - yes even a "base" machete), added an attachment with a real sword blade, and added some iron hilt bits, so that low-level players can get some early sword action too. It's choppy. It's gross. I just couldn't get the textures on the hilt bits to merge in the middles, and the screenshot is kind of deceiving, and I'll fess up to that. It bothers me too. But damnit, it'll get the job done.

The vanilla Chinese Officer Sword

No image necessary. Upped the base damage a bit so it can match the new swords and not be so sad.

Thirdly - Weird rambling!

This is my first mod I've ever released to the public.

I made this mod (and also basically all of the personal mods I've never released) because it seems modern video game developers like to think North America is just Gun Land, where swords are only either ancient/broken/rare museum pieces, or props - parts of background/environment display ("Because haha who would actually USE a sword when GUNS are here???" -Guy who constantly runs around with a combat knife in games).

It's like they forgot that soon after these countries were forcefully claimed by European powers, they became the sites of dozens of wars, fought and died for, with black powder muskets and... those weird, long, bayonet-like-things that the old British and French people used to- Ah yes, SWORDS.

As of this mod's release, the American Civil War ended only 160 years ago. HUNDREDS, maybe even THOUSANDS of swords (sabres and such - not talking bayonets) were still being manufactured or imported for both sides of the war during that time. Those weren't ceremonial, trophy, or parade swords - those were tools of war, which were made - and, by many written accounts, USED - for battle to the death.

Swords were even issued as serious military weapons right up to World War One! Allegedly, the first confirmed kill of WWI was a British cavalryman killing a German scout, on horseback, with his sword. How awesome is that??? (from a technology-across-history standpoint, not human death you weirdo. war is bad. it never changes or smth idk)

Those swords didn't just rust away or get melted down for scrap. Well, not most of them. Steel, brass, hell even wood and sometimes leather can last 160 years. Those swords are still around today, and they are just as good at killing an unarmored, human-sized-or-slightly-larger living being, as ever. Seems not many people walk around in full plate or mail in modern settings, and most military-like plate-harnesses aren't even knife-proof, not even in the post-apocalypse.

(look, I know I'm throwing shade on knives a lot here. I actually do know the practical advantages of knives, and why they still exist, and why modern swords don't, but damnit, I'm trying my best over here c'mon please)

Video games with large weapon selections, set in modern-realistic settings (like GTA), have very few excuses to exclude swords like military sabres. Games that play around with American history, and ALSO include large weapon selections (like FO4) have ZERO excuses to exclude America's own national swords from the roster.

It's downright unpatriotic, and I'm not even American.

So here we are. I'm not good at modding. I'm not even of average skill. However, where there is will, there is a way. Using vanilla resources, some borrowed resources, and years of tweaking in Blender, Creation Kit, and FO4Edit, I have done the best I can. This is what my pathetic hands have wrought. Please throw it in the proper refuse bin when you are finished with it.

Fourthly - Shout-outs!

This mod was made possible thanks to these people who are way cooler than me:

Akaixz
- added Modern Swords to the distribution list for his Weapon Leveled List Injector so that it can appear throughout the game.
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/92892

BIOHAZARDCURE
- made the clean blade textures I used for all the clean straight blades.
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1384

th1098
- made the entire "blucher" (1796 cavalry) sabre that I used extensively, hilt and blade.
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/29635

zachtan1234
- made a brass/gold texture for the hilt of th1098's Blucher Sabre, and a retexture of the blade, both of which I used.
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/50108

Kingy
- made the entire sabre model that this mod started with - which I had to convert to .nifs - the default blades for most of these swords, as well as the grip/hilt that became both the Navy Officer Sword and Smallsword entirely.
