You're welcome. As for making him recruitable, I'm sure it is possible, but I don't have the skills to do it. Recruitment would have to be locked behind his random encounter events so as not to break him or his interactions with the Silver Shroud. This is one for Larannkiar, who could probably set it up so that you have to recruit him as the Shroud. That would be cool.
out of my hundreds of play-thru's i have only spoken to Manta Man once. saw his corpse once too. so if he were essential i might actually get the chance to say hey buddy. but without recruitment....Why?
Coool. But to answer your description's claim he's been overlooked, one existing main mod for this sort of thing, Essential Unique NPCs and Pets which makes many essential (or protected if essential stops quest options etc) already does list Manta Man (it changes him to essential).
Missed that one, probably because I searched "protected" and not "essential." I tend to avoid adding the essential flag since you never know when someone will need to be put down. Still, that mod provides a good master list of NPCs that probably should be protected/essential but aren't.
Yes, because of that issue is the very reason why that mod marks some as protected instead of essential (or excludes some NPCs). And iirc a few of the other similar essential-flagging mods do the same. But yes the one I linked is prob the most extensive and maybe the only one to cover Manta Man before yours. And essential is maybe better for him as there's no (vanilla) quest reason to kill him - and the only two (vanilla) times you might meet he's in a fight and you might accidentally kill him if you join in and he's only protected. [iirc, I've also read a protected flag doesn't protect an NPC from dying via you blowing up a nearby car or robot(?), but don't think that applies in Manta's meetings anyway.]
The essential flag for any of the settlers (and recruitable NPCs) would be bad for a NW raider play through if you have to take a settlement by force. Although NW may be set up to remove protected/essential flags on its own, but I wouldn't know since I haven't done a raider run.
I've read about the exploding cars thing, too. Same for missile turrets, although I don't recall seeing it happen. Never liked that one, but I haven't dug into turret records to see if there's a switch for that. While it is more realistic to be that way, if realism is the reason for it, then it should apply to all of the other turrets, too. Friendly fire isn't selective, and all that.
I should put together a list of those classic adventures. I mean, who could forget the epic DC Comics crossover adventures of Batmantaman or Manta Man of Steel?
Manta Man is part of a special random encounter connected to the Silver Shroud quest line.
Edit: When encountered he's fighting raiders (or the like), but without the protected flag, he can be killed before you even get a chance to talk to him. There's at least one additional encounter with him that happens later, but the same thing can happen. It would be a shame if is head exploded during the unique Silver Shroud/Manta Man dialog.
