This was fixed years ago by the unofficial patch and since you require the latest version of the game well, so does the unofficial patch so there is no difference using this or the patch then. They also fixed a ton of workshop and settlement issues that are related to this bug.
I wanted to post my mod since I didn't see anything that was just the Tato fix. If people just want this fix and don't want to download the Unofficial Patch for any reason, I wanted to provide that option.
As a precaution against the bug I've read you can store the unassigned plants (but it has to be done asap, before any first attack), and there's a claimed confirmed workaround at this gamespot faq page.
I never noticed it myself but maybe because (or so I've read) it comes from damage via settlement attacks and as I'm not into settlements, I use No Random Settlement Attacks and just do minimal settlement stuff as required to advance quests. Either way thanks for sharing a fix.
I have had issues in current and previous playthroughs where: (1) the original crops are destroyed (by combat usually) and you then try to fix it but cannot, (2) the original crops are stored then replanted elsewhere on the Abernathy property.
I'm hoping this mod fixed your issues as they fixed mine. If there are any issues, please post them and I'll try to get it fixed as soon as I can.
I have everything that is included in the Next-Gen update, Creation Club assets as well. Unfortunately, on my end, I cannot test if it works on version's before the Next-Gen Update.
I've included the mod's requirements as a note on the mod page, as it wasn't included when first posting. Sorry for any confusion.

But, yes, the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch does this as well. Use which ever you feel like downloading.
Thanks for sharing.
