      thanks! not strictly a 1950s reference, but certainly an inspiration here :) .... you can tell a persons age by the Doctor they grew up with eh? ;p

      Interestingly, though as the famous Brigadier he's primarily a 1970s character, his paranormal/alien military investigations origin within the Whoniverse stretch back to circa 1951 (the Immortals, as per Deadly Reunion an official Who novel). Such incidents lead to various precursor 1950s/60s secret military organisations (involving him) that preceed UNIT. And UNIT's origin is inconsistent - some references state the Brigadier set it up in 1973, others that UNIT actually formed in 1958 and that he joined it in 1967.
