About this mod

This patch allows you to use canteens from the Canteens of the Commonwealth mod to quench your thirst in the Survive the Wasteland mod's system.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
This is a patch for Canteens of the Commonwealth and Survive the Wasteland! You will need BOTH of these mods in order for this to work. PLEASE GO ENDORSE THESE MODS AS WELL!

The Survive the Wasteland mod is great for adding general needs (Food/Drink/Sleep) to your game without being in Survival mode. However, all drinks added by other mods register as food instead of water, so they don't quench your thirst. This patch modifies the Military Canteen in the Canteens of the Commonwealth mod to have the necessary effects and keywords to trigger the thirst quenching it should!

Currently the only canteen affected in this patch is the Military Canteen. I would love to make the rest work (and probably will eventually), but the Survive the Wasteland system just doesn't want to play nice with the canteens when I have them all modified for some reason. I'll be experimenting with this to try and fix it, however. The reason I chose the Military Canteen instead of one of the others is because I use The Refill Patch for Canteens of the Commonwealth so I can refill my canteens at various water sources, which I find immersive and far more enjoyable than having to use the canteen filling stations originally added by the mod. The Refill Patch only converted the Military Canteen, however, so it is currently the only one you can refill, and as such I prioritized that one over the other canteens.

How to install:
  • Install Canteens of the Commonwealth, either manually or via your mod manager.
  • Install Survive the Wasteland, either manually or via your mod manager.
  • Install this patch, either manually or... yeah you get it.
  • Ensure this patch loads AFTER Canteens of the Commonwealth and Survive the Wasteland. I don't believe the load order of those two mods matters, but just in case it does I have Canteens loading before Survive and it works as intended.
  • Quench thy thirst, Wastelander.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND The Refill Patch for Canteens of the Commonwealth, as it allows you to easily fill your canteen up with clean or dirty water depending on the source. It is not required for this patch to work, but it's a very immersive addition. Note that it does change the Military Canteen's name to just "Canteen", so you'll need to look for that when crafting or add it via a mod item adding menu/console command (I use the DavesMod ESP Explorer). You'll also want the Fill Bottle While Playing on Any Difficulty mod to allow you to fill the canteen if you're not on Survival mode. Note that you'll probably need to open the console and type player.addperk 00249f55 after installing the Fill on Any Difficulty mod so you can get the Survival mode perk that lets you fill things up.

FAQ:

The canteens aren't quenching my thirst!
Make sure you're using the Military Canteen (or just "Canteen" if using the Refill patch). If not, check your load order, and ensure you have the required mods installed.

Where do I get the canteen?
Either craft the Military Canteen via the Canteens of the Commonwealth method or add it with an in game ESP Explorer.

Why are you still using Survive the Wasteland and not playing in Survival mode or using a newer needs mod?
One, Survival mode leaves some things to be desired. Two, there are definitely newer mods that do similar things to STW, but I've been using this one for a while and it works well. Three, a lot of needs-based mods add other things that are either incompatible with other major mods out there, break mod added systems, add unnecessary things to the game, or cause other issues altogether. Survive the Wasteland is simple and compatible with pretty much everything that I've found, only issue is making patches for mod added drinks. Mod added foods work fine, though.

Why did you only patch the Military Canteen?
Because I use the Refill patch for Canteens of the Commonwealth, and that patch's authors only added the Military Canteen to the fillable bottle list. I'll probably be adding the quench-effect to the rest of the canteens later (when I can figure out why they just don't want to work), and I may look into making my own patch for the refilling aspect to include all canteens, but I'm not putting a time estimate on these.

I have the Fill Bottle on Any Difficulty mod enabled, but I still can't refill my canteens!
If you haven't put your game into Survival mode for your current character yet, you won't have the hidden perk that lets you fill things with water. Just type player.addperk 00249f55 in the console (hit the ~ button) and you should be good. Also third person doesn't like to let you interact with as many things, so if you're trying in third person, switch to first to fill your canteen up.

Does this work with the Next Gen update?
Idk, I haven't played on the Next Gen update, I set my game to not update in case it broke stuff. If the original mods work, then this one should, too. I think they should work since neither use F4SE but I can't speak fully to that.

Is this compatible with ----?
Probably, I mean it's just a patch for Survive the Wasteland and Canteens of the Commonwealth. If you have other patches for these two mods there may be potential conflicts, but I highly doubt it. I'm playing with the Refill patch for Canteens and the Keyword Fix (Nuka Cola) for Survive the Wasteland patches and have zero issues.

CREDITS
Obviously credit to meysamkhr for the Canteens of the Commonwealth mod, and SephDragoon for the Survive the Wasteland mod. Also credit to the authors of the other patches I mentioned because I love refilling canteens and like the Nuka Colas still displaying as, well, Nuka Colas. Also credit to my dog Hermy for listening so patiently while I rant about custom effects not working into the wee hours of the morning. (He was asleep and heard nothing...)
