hmn, I've been doing this on mass with the FCOM mod which allows you to get up to 9 coursers on your side and you can also make them into settlers if you want, you can also do the same thing with the institute generic scientists and many of the other gen synths the game has to offer within the FCOM mod.
it's a bit overkill, but it's been fun playing with them at your side.
